Work from home jobs: legitimate?

So, I'm thinking of leaving my current retail job soon, but don't have anything else lined up yet. I was considering doing a work from home job for a short while until I find something else, and maybe part time after that for extra cash.

My question is, most/all of these jobs seem shady at best, at least the ones I'm finding; are there any that are legitimate? Listings like this one from Craigslist seem too good to be true; $500/week is about $25,000/year, which isn't a ton but is pretty decent for a side/part time thing that requires basically no experience or qualifications. Anyone have experience with these sorts of jobs? Any companies or aspects to look for (or look out for?) Are they actually going to send me a check, and is it going to be even close to the amount they say in the ad? If it really is like they say in the ad, it could be a great temporary job.

Most of them are scams. In fact, most of them are a particular pyramid scheme selling Herbalife. If you see this one, run a mile.

A lot of these "work from home" gigs are totally fake. It's typically a pyramid scheme "buy our how-to-make money" kit type crap. So, save yourself the trouble, and don't bother, you don't know who is going to end up with your information, what type of scam they're running and if they're legit.

99% are either "Buy our $200 book that tells you how to make money by selling $200 books", telemarketing/cold-calling, or pyramid scams where you go door to door trying to sell things like school textbooks.

The ones that are semi-legit are often tedious crap like manually assembling components, where you are paid peicework and you need to put in 50hrs a week to do enough pieces to scrape minimum wage.

OK, these are pretty much exactly the responses I was expecting. Time to look for real employment. Thanks everyone.

These folks are right. However, there are quite legit ways to start making extra cash online that lots of people may not have considered. Here's a Reader Digest article on using the internet to make cash. Some aren't practical for everybody, but I think there's plenty of people here who could make good money using Ebay or their computer tech expertise.

And here's an article that shows some example of Work-at-Home opportunities. There's some ideas in there I hadn't considered either, such as shooting photos and selling them. Worth noting, though, most of these aren't substitutes for a full-time job. Still, plenty of people are success doing such activities to make a few extra bucks to throw into retirement or splurge on a vacation.

I know a former phone sex operator.

The money wasn't great, and it's a pretty degrading job. It averaged around $10/hr, 20 hours a week. Her actual pay varied, depending on what her average call durations were. And she had to talk to perverts of all stripes; it didn't matter if somebody got off on calling her all manner of degrading misogynist epithets, she not only had to stay on the line with him, but pretend that she liked it to get him to stay on the phone.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Regarding legitimate work-from-home positions, there is a lot of demand for medical transcriptionists and medical billers. Both jobs require education and certification, which usually takes about two years, and can also be done from home.

They're not exactly something you can start doing right now from home to make extra money, but if you're looking for a more long-term idea, both of those are likely to stay in demand for a while.

Actually, there are courses you can take for medical transcription that cost around $300 and take maybe 3-6 months to complete.

What is it exactly? Just typing up handwritten notes so that they have them in electronic format?

What is the pay and work like?

Actually it's listening to Doctors' notes and typing them up. It can be rather difficult depending on the speed/accent of the doctor.

I'm not exactly sure what the pay is like, but I'm pretty sure it's by page transcribed. Not 100%. It is something I'd suggest looking into. I know a few elderly people who do it to supplement their retirement.

I was basing the two years estimate around what it took one friend of mine to complete her courses, but she was working full-time and had a lot of family obligations at the same time, so she might have taken longer than average.

Here (sweet government stats) says that you could probably make around 10-12 a hour doing medical transcripts:
    http://www.bls.gov/oes/2001/oes319094.htm

It would take you about 34 hours (assuming a $300 course cost and a 35% tax bracket) to break even.

These days a good rule of thumb is "Can this job be done by someone in any physical location with a HS diploma and reasonable knowledge of english?" If yes, then this job will be sent overseas where they can pay far less than minimum wage. Medical transcription in particular has been booming.

Now overseas phone sex....that is an untapped market.

Work from home jobs are hard to get. Real ones, I mean. The most common real ones are writing jobs and phone jobs. If you're not interested in turning your home office into a mini call-center or you're not into writing and researching a bunch of stuff all day, don't bother.

Even then, they're hard to get. You have to know where to look, and they're highly competitive. You basically have to find out if the company is open to ideas and if they do a lot of work on the Internet. If they don't, no chance in hell. If they do, small chance in hell you'll get it.

I lucked out, and there was a legit ad I responded to. I make $12 an hour at home, which is lucky because my wife can't drive, but now I can drive her to work.
