Answer: Yes, they can. Multiple people can choose the same rival, and that rival may not even know you exist. So if your rival leaves the island, they are considered 'dead' for all intensive purposes of that mechanic. If that's the case, it means you too can attempt to leave the island. One tried to kill himself to get the 'lone wolf' and at least two couples committed suicide at various points. It didn't seem to make a lot of sense to make someone's win condition to find a length of rope and hang the two of you since you were lovers. At least to us.

1) Be the last team standing (lone wolves each count as a team of 1)
2) Escape the island
Keep in mind that not very many people will have a chance at number 2, but the win condition is achievable.
