how do black, Latino, and white tastes differ?

This is an offshoot of the Japan vs America tastes topic. Throughout the years, I've seen countless posts about Japanese vs "Western" games or gamer preferences, but I've never seen posts that talk about America's different ethnic groups, and what different tastes in games they have. As many of you know, America is one of the most diverse countries in the world, with about 30% of the country made up of non-whites, and many of those people speaking a language besides English as a primary language. Many of America's major cities are "majority minority" too (Houston, LA, New York).

So how do black, Latino, and white tastes differ when it comes to video games? Are they pretty much the same or very different? Most blacks vote Democrat, and most famous black leaders in history have been socialist or communist (WEB Dubois, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr.) Support for the Iraq war (before it was launched) was a mere 25% amongst black Americans. Meanwhile, most whites vote Republican and support for the war was at 75%. Different tastes in TV, film, literature, and music are well known, too. I don't know much data on Latino Americans, but last I heard it was about 50/50 when it came to Republican vs Democrat support from Latinos.

And a poll during the Katrina New Orleans event showed that about 5% of black Americans approved of President George W. Bush, much lower than white and Latino support for the President. Knowing this, do you think blacks are more or less likely to play "patriotic" video games such as the Tom Clancy games?

Most of us cannot name any black or Latino video game developers, either, although we can probably eventually think of some TV/film/literature/music created by blacks and Latinos.

And American Blacks have the highest crime rates in the industrialized world. Does this make a black guy more or less likely to play a game that "glorifies" crime, such as Grand Theft Auto or Saint's Row?

Do developers take the tastes of latino and black gamers into account when creating a game?

I mean, it's not like they're going to see any sales from these demographics.

    Is that sarcasm?

Without hard data I see this thread dying in a wreck of fiery anecdotes and racial undertones

Do blacks and Latinos even play games? Do they even know what videogames are? Aren't they too poor in Africa/Mexico and busy dying of AIDS/drug wars to play them?

Sweet Mary I hope I don't get in trouble for posting here.

No, I don't imagine that games are developed with specific racial demographics in mind, or that a person's race will necessarily have anything to do with what kind of games they play. I mean, everybody plays Madden, everybody plays Grand Theft Auto.

I think this should go in D&D, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I'm a middle-of-the-road 3rd generation American hispanic (yes holy shit a latino on these boards gb2mexico, etc.), and I don't see how my taste differs from any one else's. Metal Gear, Bioshock, Halo, Prime, IIDX...

I don't see why I'm supposed to like certain games because of my background.

All I learned from global politics I learned from videogames.

Namely, the Church and their evil false god are the real power behind everything and the cause of all suffering.

    Also, Kill all Haitians.

Well, this is going bad places fast.

With the exception of a few, I don't think I've ever seen a game specifically targeted to Latinos or blacks. It just isn't as profitable as pandering to a general American or Asian audience I guess.

Guys, this is sarcasm. He was pointing out how there were some allegedly racist remarks (I'm not taking sides, either way) in the referenced America and Japan thread, and commented that the same wouldn't fly for other races.

Even though the other thread was about nationalities instead of races.

This thread just screams joke thread. I spent the last few minutes looking up any studies/research on it, and there doesn't seem to be much that is:

    A. From a reliable source.

    B. Easy to find.

I don't think theres any video games out there (off the top of my head anyways) that are directed at a specific minority/majority/whatever.

Now, im not saying there are no games directed at certain Large groups of people, mainly why some games never get ported out of thier original country - but then that is also up to popularity of the game when it first is made. If a game is released in Japan lets say, and has little to none popularity, im assuming they arnt going to port it over to NA.

Or I could be just be talking out of my ass. In reality, I don't care.

Nationality does not equal race. There's a pretty fundamental difference.

This topic is funny because it's no more racist than the other one, but it just seems so awful because it's much closer to home for a lot of us.

In other news, a new study shows that black people buy the same type of games as white people.
