The older version of the Macbook had an issue with the buttons being pressed against the street when close. Keeping the thin little film of..hmm..styrofoam? I don't know what it's made out of.... that came with the laptop was well worth it.

The newer versions have corrected that problem.
I've had a MacBook since release day (May 2006), like I had to assault an Apple store employee who was trying to take it home for himself ... never had any issue with the keyboard. It doesn't touch the screen, the keys haven't discolored, or anything. Nothing about it is as pretty as it was 17 months ago, but I got black; that's always a hard color to keep clean.
My girlfriend got me a KB cover. She found one at our student store for $20, I'm pretty sure places like Best Buy or whatever would carry them too.
They're nice to use. They're really thin, contour to the keys and thus don't move around, and they're easy to remove and wash. Plus they basically seal the crack under the keys so spilling liquids on your keyboard isn't nearly as as it usually is.
