Well I'm off to Sheffield University for one exchange semester tommorow and everything is all prepared.

One question though for the locals (dirty chavs welcome):
The student visa allows me to work 20 hours a week and I'm going to be needing that for spending money. Is it difficult to find work/what type of work am I likely to be able to find? I have experience in childcare, warehouse(forklift) and office peon.

Depending on the hours you want (times of the day, not number of hours), most places are starved for forklift operators. It depends on your location.

Draconian. You will most certainly need certification, but I don't know enough about it.

bar work is the aussie stereotype job O/S, but I dare say you might be able to get some part-time data entry/clerking stuff too. And there's always supermarkets.

    Excellent, more victims arrive...

    Seriously Sheffield is fantastic.

Your best bet is bar work/retail. Retail jobs are pretty easy to get in the run up to Christmas. Office peons are plentiful and it's hard to get good office work for the hours you'll require. Not sure on the other two.

I used to live in Sheffield - one of the best cities in England, I think.

You could go and register with a temp agency (Manpower) etc. That's what I did when I was a student there, and I got much better-paid work than bar work etc.
