Basically not much - it's just easier to plug one cable in than have to deal with all 5.

I get a sharper image through HDMI on my dad's TV but that's just because it's outputting at 1080p and not the 720p that my monitor can do through component.

You can do it with VGA as well I think. Some DVD players do upscale over non digital connections though, depends on the model and if it was made before everything went mental with DRM and HDCP. I'm honestly surprised they even let MS play HD-DVDs over the USB to the 360 then to the TV via component. Infact, that type of connection is how they broke the copy-protection on HD-DVD so quickly, so I guess they're right to be assoles about that stuff.

buying the ps3 and using it as a bluray player is all fine and good, because even if bluray goes tits up, i still have a working game console

it's all the wasted cash on bluray discs that i want to avoid

common sense says bluray has it in the bag, but until hddvd stops thrashing and screaming, i'm hesitant about calling it dead

My XBox Live has been deactivated for a few months, but I'll be back up for some Tres Halos next week.

I was in the Bees Knees clan with Halo 2 back in the day, so if anyone remembers and wants to hit me up for some matches, I'm on the gamertag list.

Also Knob, Paramount just sided exclusively with HD-DVD, so I think they might slowly pick up. I'm still waiting to see how it all folds out, though.

Well at least with the 360 as back-up, you know there's always a cheap way to play HD-DVDs on it, that's how I look at it. For now I'm just getting Blu-Rays and not worrying about it. I'll be keeping my PS3 for at least 5 years in all likelihood, it's not like my PS3 and BR discs are going to explode if HD-DVD comes out of the corner like Rocky Balboa, and craps all over Blu-Ray out of nowhere.
