Hi all,
I’m curious as to what games you would recommend for someone buying there first PS2? Yes I know it sounds odd. I’ve always been a PC gamer but I’ve become bored lately and thought I might finally try a PS2. So what are your favorites? I’m into RPG, adventure, action and racing. Remember, it doesn’t have to be new titles at all. Just share some of your favorites. Thanks guys.
ICO and SotC have already been mentioned, but they can't be emphasized enough. Both are easily on my top 5 of all time. That said, MGS3, God of War 1 & 2, FFX, RE4, Gran Turismo 4 if you like realistic racing, Viewtiful Joe, and I'll also second Maximo: Ghosts to Gory. The sequel is good, but less so.
You guys are awesome. I didn’t know about some of these. ICO looks great. I was already looking at Shadow of Colossus. God Hand looks interesting. Any older games too? Thanks!
Combat Platformer: God of War/God of War II
Strategy RPG: Disgaea
Casual Racing: Burnout Revenge
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas (play Vice City first if you intend to play both)
Platformer: Ratchet and Clank (all)
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3
Alien Hominid
Devil May Cry 3
RE4
God of War 1 and 2
Gradius V
The Jak/Daxter Series
the Ratchet/Clank series
Ace Combat series
Prince of Persia series
Gradius V
I love me some of the arcade collections, too, like Capcom Classics, Taito Legends 2, the Megaman and X collections, the Sonic collections, Sega Genesis Colln, to name a few.
Try out (maybe rent first) Dragon Quest VIII, perhaps Final Fantasy X too. I enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus, and would love to try Ico and Okami. The Kingdom Hearts games aren't bad for cute action RPGs, though I'm ticked off at the second one at the moment (I'm in the middle of it and am very disappointed at how they handled the two worlds I was most looking forward to).
Guitar Hero and Katamari are definitely worth trying too.
Acceptable RPGs:
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Ryiodu [Japanesename] vs. the Longest Title Ever
Suikoden IV
Summoner 2
Non RPGs:
Twisted Metal: Black
Darkwatch
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2
Lego Star Wars 1st & 2nd trilogies
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
I've heard that American McGee's Alice and Okami are very good, but no personal experience.
Final Fantasy 12
Gran Turismo 4/ Tourist Trophy
Tekken 5/ Soul Calibur 3 (fighting but great pick up and play games!)
Disgaea 2
Okami
Kingdom Hearts 2
These are all great games at great prices that offer amazing replay value. They are all a good mix of great stories, game play and controls. They can all be played in short bursts (a couple of hours) and offer lots of side quests and opportunities for just plain old fun. :P Enjoy! The PS2 is definitely the best system right now for any new console gamers with your tastes!
final fantasy 10
god of war 1 and 2

RPG - Shadow Hearts 2 or 3. 1 is decent (and is mentioned in 2) but it's not nearly as good as 2 or 3.
Action - Okami (it's easy, though)
Horror - Silent Hill 2/3
Aside from all that has been mention previously (and I whole heartedly recommend them all):
Rogue Galaxy is a pretty fun RPG
Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a great action/RPG hybrid. If you like the Marvel pantheon at all, it's great.
Bully is a fun little romp from the makers of the GTA series - I was all like kissin' the girls around school an' stuff.
Front Mission 4 is a great little TBS game. Mecha! Frenchmen! Columbians! What's not to like?
I'd love to recommend some good racing games, but I've pretty much only played the GT series. I have played Need For Speed Underground and Burnout on my PSP, which were fun, so you might try them.
If he's coming from PC gaming, I don't think he'll take to RPGs too well. Especially JRPGs like shin megami tensei.
I got my start in Wizardry 1 back in the 80's and almost exclusively played PC RPGs since then. I took to SMT: Nocturne like a fish to water.
He just asked for recommendations and said he liked RPGs... we'd be remiss to not suggest what is probably the most mature RPG series for the PS2.
Let him make his own decisions, if he can find them.
What I didn't suggest, was stuff like Xenosaga, which I think WOULD be obnoxious to a PC gamer (as it was me). Or absolute junk like Dark Angel: Apocalypse, which I think someone slapped together in their basement.
I am going to re-iterate ICO and SOtC, just because they are that awesome. A requirement, really.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a good choice.
Disgaea, Phantom Brave, and La Pucelle Tactics are all good SRPGs for you to try, and all by the same company.
Silent hill 2 and 3 are both excellent games, if you're into the whole survival horror sort of deal.
Also, i believe Resident Evil 4 is on PS2 now, neh? Pick that one up, that one is a BLAST.
Katamari Damacy is the wierdest, most enthralling game, pretty much ever.

Good call!
Some console RPGs look entirely too over the top (The Japanese SciFi stuff) or too boring (for me anyway), so thanks for keeping that in mind. Some of the simpler RPGs I’ve enjoyed in the past are often ones that are also found on consoles like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I’m a long time gamer and have the fondest memories of my NES and SNES, but that was really the last consoles I’ve played, I’ve been hardcore PC ever since. I can see so much good that can come from a PS2 just was never sure where to start. So thanks for the advice. I know I wont be able to sit down and play for more than a few hours at a time, if that. So I’m just looking for anything quickly immersive and fun. Diablo 2 comes to mind on the PC. I tried stuff like Resident Evil and I can see its impact, but it never did it for me. To quote David Wong “I have a gun. LET ME USE IT. Don't pretend your game is "challenging" because you only give me four bullets to kill eight zombie dogs with.†http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/games/manifesto.html
I did enjoy some of the old adventure RPGs PC games like Dark Sun, is there a console counterpart? The more “strategy†pointy clicky turn based games like FF never seemed to keep me engaged.

PS. This is my first PA thread and you guys own.
FYI, the challenge of the RE games is learning when to use those 4 bullets, plus, who plays RE games for the challenge anyway? I mostly play them for the B-movie atmosphere.
EDIT: not tyring to start an argument or anything, just making conversation

Heh, no argument at all. I can see the challenge and of course the atmosphere is its selling point, at which it does a great job. Its just hard for a Quake gamer to conserve ammo, its just not in our nature
Action:
Grand Theft Auto series
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
Metal Gear Solid Series
Dynasty Warriors 5
Those games should keep you busy for a long time.
Dude, I totally made a Dark Sun reference in this thread! Did you miss it? One of my favorites.
Heh, I just saw it. Whenever I used to bring up that game, not any response, now with the sig I get tons of response. :P Yeah, you won't find anything like it on the PS2, stuff like Baldur's Gate is PC only. Closest you'll ever get on console is the xbox version of Kotor.
Summoner, which I mentioned, is a western style RPG, though. Be warned, however, its a release title, so while the atmosphere is great, the draw distance is, well, baaad.
don't make me copy and paste it a thousand times till you buy it. I don't want to, but I will if you force me.
Other random, quality, games -
Beyond Good & Evil
Gradius V
ICO
Gitaroo Man
Beyond Good and Evil
Alien Hominid
Zone of Enders
Prince of Persia - Sands of Time (and then if you like it The Two Thrones, if you don't like it, your heart is dead and you will never love another game again)
Viewtiful Joe (1 and only 1 as far as I am concerned)
The Warriors
Soul Calibur 2 (I have not played 3, and heard mixed things about it, I do think alot of people (hell including me) were bitter about it being PS2 exclusive (at the time I only had a GC (olol brackets)))
Resident Evil 4 (if you don't plan on picking up a Wii and RE4 - Wii edition any time soon)
Rayman 2: Revolution
Beyond Good & Evil
I remember Dark Sun. I got that a few years after it came out from a bargain bin. It was OK.
For an RPG released in 1993, its damn good. I played it for years afterwards. My all time favourite in the genre, though I'll admit that later stuff like BG are better games.
Good call!

Yeah, there aren't many western RPGs for the PS2. I did mention Summoner 2 as one that I've played that's reasonably good, though honestly it's not as good as the Japan stuff you can get.
If you're looking to pick up and go, I'd say grab Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel or its fantasy equivilents: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2, and Champions of Norrath & Return to Norrath. They all use the same hack & slash engine but have classic RPG skill tree mechanics. They're all about as deep as a kiddie pool, but sometimes you don't need anything deep and meaningful.
I played the hell out of Dark Sun, but I played the sequel a few years too late on a computer that was too fast... the volcano level literally game overed me before I could run to the exit due to clocking speeds. They don't make RPGs like that anymore *sigh*.
Anyway, if you're not interested in detailed, involving plotlines, maybe SMT isn't the way to go... but it couldn't hurt to check them out. Digital Devil Saga just heavy metal rocks all over the place, for example. It feels like a movie, but doesn't have the "sit back and watch" problem that most games that have detailed movie-style plots do.
I'll just list a bunch of excellent games and let you pick whether you don't like them or not:
Final Fantasy X (JRPG)
Final Fantasy X-2 (JRPG)
Final Fantasy XII (JRPG)
Dragon Quest VIII (JRPG)
Kingdom Hearts (Action RPG)
Kingdom Hearts II (Action RPG)
Makai Kingdom (SRPG)
Shadow of the Colossus (Adventure)
Ico (Adventure)
Shadow of Memories (Adventure)
Okami (Adventure)
Resident Evil 4 (Action)
Devil May Cry (Action)
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition (Action)
God of War (Action)
God of War II (Action)
Onimusha: Warlords (Action)
Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (Action)
Onimusha 3: Demon Seige (Action)
Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner (Action)
Silent Hill 2 (Action/Horror)
Silent Hill 3 (Action/Horror)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (Action Stealth)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (Action/Stealth)
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (Platform)
Sly 2: Band of Thieves (Platform)
Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves (Platform)
Jak & Daxter (Platform)
Jak 2 (Platform/Action)
Jak 3 (Platform/Action)
Ratchet & Clank (Platform/Action)
Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando (Platform/Action) - Also called Locked and Loaded in Europe.
Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal (Platform/Action)
Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked (Platform/Action) - Also called Gladiator in Europe.

Then buy everything with Shin Megami Tensei in the title.
These should be your priorities above all else.
Action - Beyond Good & Evil
Adventure - ICO
RPG - Final Fantasy XII
God Hand
Guitar Hero
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3
Maximo/2 (Both Kick ass)
Resident Evil 4
Metal Slug 3
EDIT: Max Payne/2 (Both are awesome games)
And, if you are into scary games, Silent Hill 2
I'm a fan of fun, intense action games so the above list should suit you well if you like those kind of games
So fixed.
EDIT: Kingdom Hearts I & II?
Strategy RPG: Disgaea
Casual Racing: Burnout Revenge
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas (play Vice City first if you intend to play both)
