OK, so I'm going to a conference. And after all the work crap that goes on, and the swag, and whatnot, I'll be in a hotel room watching sportscenter.
Exciting.
So I have a borrowed GBA, and I want to take some new games. If you could pick any GBA games to take with, which ones? I've already decided on a Metroid - but should I get Fusion or Zero Mission?

Yes.
Um, what else, TMNT, it's short, fun and an old skool turtle beat em' up. Advance Wars 2(since 1 is really hard to find) is the best stratagey title on the GBA.
Really, thsoe 4 are all you'll need in a short period of time.
Advance Wars can at least be called rock/paper/scissors in terms of balance. And it has anime doodz. And fighter jets, battleships, submarines and rockets. I am a big FE nut, but seriously, there's no competition.
FE is pretty awesome, though. I'd grab Riviera as well, and seconding or thirding Advance Wars.
Honestly, Riviera shouldn't be too high on the list.
The item system was excellent in combat, as in prioritizing which items go with which characters and the like, but the limited item space was just horrible. The fact that items broke promoted the fact that you need back ups but that takes valuable space. Find a monster item that you can use to level up some guy? Too bad, you need to throw out something to make room for some thing you're just going to spam in practice and throw away. This game really needed a storage system similar to pokemon when you catch a poke and you already have 6 in your party. The exploration was very frustrating and slow and the game's dating sim parts made me feel genuinely creepy. The only thing this game has going for it is portability and a great battle system.
Anyways, I additionally suggest GunStar Superheroes, Minish Cap and Drill Dozer (a little on the short side but amazing game).
EDIT:

I love advance wars so much, it was my first gba game. I have all three of them.
That being said, I prefer Fire Emblem way more. The leveling up, the promotions, the way your army was how you decided to make it, everything just struck me as amazing. To each his (or her) own I guess. :P
Metroid Zero Mission is head and shoulders above Fusion - it's one of the best games on the GBA, and one of my favorites of all time.
Other recommendations that haven't been mentioned yet: Minish Cap (though this could be tough to find), Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, WarioWare Inc.: Mega MicroGame$. Since you're taking a GBA, there are also a ton of Game Boy Color and original Game Boy games that you could find for cheap: Link's Awakening is probably the best of the lot (and the two GBC Zelda games are pretty great as well).
Honestly, Riviera shouldn't be too high on the list.

Really? I loved the strict inventory limit. It really forced you to make tough (but interesting!) choices about what you picked up and what you left behind. It's the kind of system that would really encourage replay if - and I agree with you here - the exploration wasn't so slow and repetitive. Oh, and the "puzzles" are just awful: the clues don't logically lead to the solutions, and the game doesn't bother to give you feedback on whether or not you're getting closer to a solution.
But yeah, the combat is awesome: sophisticated and innovative and FUN. I loved the characters too, even if the game does kind of force you into a, uh, creepy relationship with them. Still, I'd say it's one of the best RPGs on the GBA.
I would say Zero Mission, but it depends, have you played any other metroid games?

I just ordered Ninja 5-0 a few minutes ago. I hope to be <3ing as well in little over a week.
Metroid Zero Mission is a fine choice.
I guess Riviera isn't for everyone, but it kept me entertained for many hours on a very long car ride this summer. (I guess I don't mind item grinding.)
The Wariowares will always treat you right.
For an obscure pick, I must say I really liked Mazes of Fate. It's a first person dungeoncrawler. Its a little awkward and buggy, yet I was playing it every free moment for a week. I even used my addiction to this game as a excuse to get a GBA Micro. (Easier to keep on me for lunch breaks.) I don't know why it grabbed me so much, but it did.

I'm going to 6th Advance Wars, and 3rd FFTA. These two games will keep you well, well occupied...
However, I suggest starting FFTA while you're fairly busy. I love the game, but the intro is just boring as hell. If your busy, you can basically just do the couple things it asks of you, and let it run through most the intro on its own while you're doing your stuff.
Obligatory Super Robot Taisen recommendation. It's like chess with GIANT FIGHTING ROBOTS.
Also FFTA.
The second SRT game(Original Generation 2) is quite difficult, so starting with the first one would probably be a better way to ease into the series. Just a heads up there.
I got a lot of mileage out of the Mario Advance series -- quality ports all around. FFV Advance was very good (The translation was far superior to the PSX "anthology" translation), and I hear VI has similar high quality for a port. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is extremely good, as well as Harmony of Dissonance (hope I'm remembering the titles right there, it's been a while).
I'll throw in a few more: Yggdra Union (fairly hard TBS-action-hybrid thing, but if you hate Riviera's inventory system you'll hate this even more), and my guilty pleasures, the Megaman Battle Network games. Specifically, 5 Colonel and 6 Gregar. They're like CCGs crossed with a grid-based action game, with some RPG elements thrown in.

Wholesome RPG goodness.

i recommend Gradius Galaxies and Drill Dozer, and second Advance Wars 1+2 and Superstar Saga
They actually made a game called Ninja 5-0?
Sounds like I have some good options. Now it's down to what I can find at the local game store monopoly. Wish me luck!

For real.
And shame on every single fucking one of you for not saying "Oh, and of course FFVI"
That's just mean
good call, i would highly recommend bitstream also
Ninja 5-0 is great. It's like a game that should have been made in 1993 fell through a time warp and landed on the GBA.
it was mean and I would do it again.
I shudder to think that any copies of this game are sat unplayed in warehouses somewhere.
