Rant:
PC gaming? I fucking give up. DRM, driver problems, bugs, patches because the game was released months too early, port forwarding, connection problems, the hardware upgrade cycle... FUCK! I can't do it anymore! Nevermind the fact that everything on the PC these days is a FPS, RTS, or MMO, to which I respond: I fucking suck, I fucking hate, and who the fuck has the time? In that order.
And just for good measure, to adequately express my frustration with PC gaming right now: fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck.
So, I'm getting a 360.
Here's the deal... I've been itching for a good RPG for, like, ever. I know the 360 is the wrong system for that, given that I don't particularly care for modern JRPGs
or Oblivion-style RPGs, but with Mass Effect coming out, well... I can wait.
I'm a bit conflicted about what to pick up first, though. Chromehounds looks like it's more up my alley, but from what I understand, the single player mode is almost non-existent, and nobody plays online anymore. Perfect Dark Zero seems interesting, if only because I was a addict to Goldeneye in its day, and loved Perfect Dark/Timesplitters. It's cheap, too.
Note about Gears of War:
Since I'm sure it's going to be recommended a million times, Gears of War isn't really my thing. When a game's claim to fame is largely rooted in how bloody and violent it is, I don't exactly consider that a selling point. It looks like Unreal 2.5: Brown Edition, anyway. I've played it a bit at a friend's place, and like Halo, couldn't understand what the big deal was. Was it bad? Not at all. Was it notable? Not at all.
I'm looking forward to Mass Effect, Army of Two, Rock Band, Lost Odyssey, Assassin's Creed, and a handful of other titles on the 360, but the short of it is that I just don't know what to get right now. The pickings seem pretty slim, to be honest. Aside from the really obvious stuff (really,
I don't want to hear how great you think Gears of War is), is there anything on the 360's that's sort of flown under the radar and worth a look?
For what it's worth, this is my first foray into actually owning one of the modern consoles, but my favorite games from the last generation were the Ratchet & Clank series, Mercenaries, D&D Heroes (assuming I had friends around - and note, I've already been bored to tears by Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on my PC), Gladius, and Jade Empire. For comparison's sake. I also probably won't be picking up Xbox Live (at least not right away). My experience with the XBL populace on the original Xbox was, well...
you know what they're like.
I really appreciate any advice you've got, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Good luck with that, friend.
BTW, these are just games that are not FPS's, RTS's, or MMO's, or JRPG's, or Oblivion RPG's.
Yeah, it's kind like saying Halo's claim to fame is fluorescent colors and lots of jumping. If you wanna take it for surface quality, then that's your bag and your loss.
As far as games, Bioshock, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, Crackdown, and Forza are really great.
I'm right there with you and Mass Effect. Can't be any more excited for that shit.
And I didn't like Gears either. It was too repetitive. Until the other night when I gave it a spin after a few months collecting dust and, hey, it was actually pretty damn fun!
Download demos! I downloaded the Viva Pinata demo and now I'm definitely going to pick it up.
Stranglehold is great for when you just want to wreck people's shit so I would suggest giving the demo a try. The same goes for Stuntman Ignition, Burnout Revenge, Full Auto, and Flatout. I would rent Earth Defense Force 2017, or just buy it if you have someone for co-op.
Bring your checkbook.

> turn on light
Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.
I'm just getting tired of all this dark and gritty, way-too-serious element with shooters. Conversely, the everything's-neon-colors-and-full-of-anthropomorphized-cat-rabit-things-that-speak-gutteral-English-and-need- to-join-your-party-of-12-year-old-school-children-who-save-the-world bit that modern JRPGs are consumed by has long overstayed its welcome.
Either let me blow up lots of shit without thinking too much about it (e.g. like Mercenaries), or tell me a really good story that isn't in the JRPG mold (FF12 did a pretty good job of that, for the most part). But man, I'm just tired of the cliches. And you know how I'm into game mechanics and number crunching from CoH... gimme a good mech sim, and I'll be set for years. But those aren't around anymore, either.
I suppose there's a chance Hellgate: London might get me to upgrade my PC, but after playing Tabula Rasa and being the polar opposite of impressed, I can't think of a single PC exclusive that I'm looking forward to. Except Hellgate: London.

Anyways, I appreciate the suggestions, guys. As for Bioshock, I might pick it up, but after the DRM shit that 2k stuck on Bioshock on the PC, it's a moral issue for me at this point. I won't buy it.
...unless I can find it used, and can rest assure knowing they won't get a fucking dime from the sale. Which shouldn't be a problem.
How's Rainbow 6: Vegas online? I used to play R6 on the Xbox, and I loved it, but in co-op mode, everyone just started memorizing where the NPCs were, and each level became a race to finish. That wasn't much fun.
...especially when Gears has an option to turn off the in-game gore almost completely (cutscenes are unaffected).
Anyway, even if you don't subscribe to XBox Live Gold, you can still download XBox Live Arcade titles on the free Silver program. Tons of good stuff there and there are demos to try it all out before you purchase anything. Personally, I've had more fun with XBLA titles than I have with retail titles so far (although Dead Rising, Guitar Hero 2, Burnout Revenge, Blue Dragon, and Gears of War have all been pretty fun and I'm looking forward to picking up Bioshock when I get some spare cash).
