I need help getting started on Disgaea

I own Disgaea. I've played about 4 hours of it. I'm not saying I don't like it, because I suspect I DO like it. I just don't get it. I can't help but feel as if I'm missing a LOT of stuff.
It might be due to the fact that I'm not a frequenter of SRPGs by any means, and Disgaea may be considered to be the deep end of the genre that one can be thrown into.
I want to play this game and understand everything that's going on, but as you might already know, the game throws quite a bit at you right from the beginning. I guess what I'm asking is, how did all of you get to understand Disgaea, and what tips have you got for me to get started?
