Or, how I learned to stop worrying, and love our neighbors to the south.
So, many of you might recall my talking about how awesome my employer is; flexible schedule, great benefits, ability to work from home,
laissez faire management, good pay, and the satisfaction of working for a noble(-ish) cause.
Well, while I've been home sick this week, shit has gone pear-shaped. First, on the half-day I spent working before nearly dying of God's own case of Strep, my department head called me into his office, telling me that he was being forced into a lateral transfer. No one knows what is going to happen to our department, which was his baby; he conceptualized it, brought it into being, and shaped it into what it is. Without him at the helm, it's unlikely that it's long for the world. Most likely, we're going to be folded into two separate programming groups, with a few of us (including myself) ending up in Quality Assurance. We've been assured that we will all keep our jobs, and that those jobs won't be changing soon, but...blech. Upon returning to work today, I was informed that HVTN (our largest trial sponsor) is shutting down one of its--and correspondingly,
our--largest research projects. This forms the foundation of our funding, and the loss of this trial, especially so early, is a critical setback for our entire organization.
For a while, I've been considering a move. Where? Well, that's a good question. I had thought about polishing my French a bit, and moving to France indefinitely; I lived in Europe for two years as a young man, and I have always been keen to go back. HOWEVER...staying in the US, especially considering the state of my savings (read: good but not great), seems to be a better option.
So I've been thinking about Oregon. Bend, specifically. I've got a love for the outdoors, and have spent time working in Bend, and it's a beautiful place; not too big, not too small, lots of outdoor shit to do, convenient to Portland, pleasant climate...and, most importantly, you can buy a new-ish, modest 3-bedroom home there for at or around $200,000. I am keen to buy some property, and this seems like a great opportunity.
I won't lie, moving somewhere where $1,000-$1,500 a month, instead of being rent on a decent 1-bedroom apartment, could be going toward
buying a beautiful 3-bedroom HOUSE (complete with large front and back yards)...well, it is a pretty big attraction.
I have looked at work opportunities in Bend, and there are literally dozens of listings that are at or near what I'm getting paid in Seattle now, but the cost of living there (at least compared to Capitol Hill, which ain't exactly a cheap place to live) is far, far less.
So, I'm seriously considering jumping ship, and moving from SEa++le to Bend. It would suck to lose touch with my favorite SE++ folks up here, but I think it may be on the horizon, regardless.
tl;dr Thinking of moving from Seattle to Bend. Are there any SE++ Oregonians that can offer input?
P.S. Yes, I could've put this in H/A, but I prefer a higher ratio of bullshit responses to actual input. Also, our mods are way radder.

isn't that a perversion of natural law or something?
But it would be cool to live a little closer to Powell's.
And you and Sami, I guess.

And living closer to Powell's, as well as having AT LEAST ONE SURPLUS ROOM to use as a library...holy crap, I am all a-bonered.

I was there for a couple weeks during the summer, and it was perfect. Low 90's. Not a cloud in the sky. Decently cool at night. The people seemed super friendly, and the area was just too cool.
I am really liking this idea.
