Sounds like its definitely an EM interference problem. My first guess would be probably from your ignition leads, especially since it's tied to RPM (unless these are usually shielded - my experience comes from aircraft, which they are. I'm not sure if they normally are with car engines).

Either way, irregardless of the source, I'm not sure how easy it'll be to get it to stop. If it was a wired device of some source, I'd say try to shield and ground the wire. Since it's wireless, I'm not really sure where the EM interference could be getting picked up from. You could try something like tinfoil, but something tells me that'll just screw up with the FM transmitter as well...

unfortunately you'll probably never get as clear a signal as you could with a direct connection. you could a different brand of FM tuner to see if the problem is as bad.

I use an iRiver one with my ipod after trying many many many. DO get one that plugs into the 12v, the ones that are ipod powered are weak, but try to get one that doesnt charge the ipod constantly as well, cuz then you'll kill the ipod battery. the iriver one plugs into the HP jack.

I get that same sort of thing with mine. I have one of the ones that is powered off of the lighter so it has a fairly strong signal. What I have found though at least on mine is it depends what station I have it set to. It gives me a choice of 4. 85.9 seems to have the least "engine noise" but often it ends up being a local radio station (I travel around quite a bit) and I have to go to one of the other ones. Like others have said I don't think there is any way to get rid of it completely.
