Cell phone question from a cell phone dummy

Hello everyone,
I just have a question that I fear I might already know the answer to, but I want to make sure.

Is it possible to use foreign cell phones here in North America? (I'm in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada specificly).

The reason I ask is that I need a new phone as my current one is as old as the hills and not working properly anymore. I'm pretty picky when it comes to things like this. Features aren't really an issue for me as the basic things that come on all phones now are fine with me. I really just use it for the phone-functionality anyways - not for music or tv. But I'm picky about aesthetic. So there's a DoCoMo phone that I would kill for, and I just want to know if it's possible to 'unlock' it and use my simcard in it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Smarmy answers are not. =P

    Really??

    Awesome, I'm on Fido network!

I have to really look into this now. Any ideas on good websites/forums that would have lots of info?

    Thanks :)

I know nothing of your land of Canadia, or of your Canadia'an company Fido, but here in the United States of Awesome we have a company called Sprint, with whom I have brokered a mutually beneficial arrangement, ie. they allow me to talk to other individuals wherever I like, and I pay them monthly.

Anywho, thre are specialty internet forums for Sprint Customers. Maybe Fido customers have set up the same thing, and you could look for it.
