Beyond her brilliance, there's a reason behind this:
Wilhelm, the CEO of Vector Industries, is the guy behind everything in the games. From what I understand, he was on Earth when the Zohar was found, so he's practically immortal. Now, I haven't played through all of Episode II yet, and none of Episode III, but from what I've read in various sources, Shion is:

    1. The individual who called the Gnosis into our realm of existence.
    2. Mary Magdaline's servant (Mary herself is two people -- the spirt is in KOS-MOS, while the body was used for T-ELOS).

    Oh, chaos is Jeshua, btw.

A bullshit reason, but a reason nonetheless.

Yes, yes, all that is fine, but what would have been lost making her, you know, credible as having a doctorate? 30, maybe. 28 at the youngest.
Junior, despite the "Hi, I'm Ash from Pokemon" voice acting, was probably my favorite character.

He had a good storyline and attacks, but the entire thing was so sketchy. Nothing would have been lost by making him the same age as his brothers.
    Question:
Was Rubedo's girlfriend's (the catatonic girl that MOMO is based on) soul passed to MOMO as well as the Y-data? Because that's the only way I can see it making much sense.

I don't even remember. This game had more wonky sci-fi mysticism than Star Wars. The fact that it could deal with topics that I tend to love in games... apocalypse, biblical themes, etc. and still be forgettable and bore the hell out of me is saying quite a lot, actually.

You're right in that changing the protagonists to something more...rational, would've helped. I still like Junior, though, dammit. :P

While we're on the subject, there's a line of dialogue in Episode I that bugs the hell out of me. One of the Woglinde's bridge officers says "Even the production models differ greatly between those that have seen action and those that haven't" regarding the Realians. The in-game encyclopedia says it has something to do with manufacturers either making enhanced prototypes of production equipment, or field testing them, or some other damn thing that really doesn't explain that line at all. It's like the game's version of "If it weren't for my horse, I would never have gotten into college." It always drives me crazy when I get to that point.
    RE: Xenogears' difficulty

The dungeon that always gets me is the one where you and Bart are trapped under the sand. I must've wandered around there for hours the first time I got that far. The parts in Shevat where you have to go through the various tunnels/elevator shafts suck, too.

Man I love'd the first disk of xenogears, and then turned it off in disgust at what the second disk was.

As for xenosaga I'm at the verry end of the game but got distracted by something at the time of playing it and now I'm not that enthusiastic about learning the systems all over again. Picked up xenosaga2 and don't want to start it till I've beaten 1. Typical catch 22.

Xenogears was the first game I ever loved. It's probably a big part of the reason I still play games. It was flawed, yeah - but it was still great, and even with it's flaws it STILL has some of the best characters ever as far as RPGs go, especially some of the antagonists.

I don't have time to play this game. No, but someone does. And that person will start a Let's Play. And it will be good.

I just got this month's EGM, and they have an article about Xenogears. They're doing this thing where every month they dissect a wacky storyline, and Xeno was number 5 on the list. The way they laid it out to make it really understandable, but at the same time, manage to make the story sound like what I'm sure the devs were going for; grand. I might get around to transcribing it on the first post.

I don't want my universe saved by teenagers or elementary school students if there's no good reason for them to look like that.

God yes, this is practically a iron-clad rule of JRPGs, and one of my biggest annoyances. Since when do 15 year olds have the patience, the determination and the will to go on a world-saving quest? FFIX might even be the worst, as I think Eiko(whatever the summoner chick's name was) was like, 8 years old, and ViVi was supposed to have a child-like mind.

This is definitely not one of my favorite games (if pressed, I wouldn't even say I liked it, I don't think), yet every couple of years I bust it out and play through.

I always, always use Fei, Bart, and Billy.

Empathy from the target audience, and greater potential for character growth.

I try to use Elly as much as I can because she's a huge character, but if not her then Citan. Usually my third member is Billy, Emeralda, or Bart. I fucking love the combos in this game, especially Billy's.

And I never understood that. When I was 15, I couldn't empathize with 15 year olds going on a grand adventure in a fantasy world, any more than I could 18-20 year olds. Setting anime shows in highschool(as much as I dislike it) actually makes sense for that reason, as there is a lot of actual teen drama.

Also, I think a 20 year old that's thrown into a conflict to save the world has plenty of room for character growth.

How 'bout Krelian? He's got 30 beat by at least a half a millenia, and he develops a TON over the course of the game, especially towards the end.
