I believe that's "Duck Amuck." It's on Golden Collection volume 1. And yes, it is a classic.

Poor Daffy, destined to play second fiddle to Bugs, and under almost constant abuse as he attempts to prove that it is HE! NOT THAT RABBIT! Who is the real star!

Of course, if Daffy started winning, he wouldn't be as funny.

It's called "Duck Amuck". It's pretty much the quintessential cartoon in my eyes, since it's self-admittedly silly and absurd.

I know it's hard to think kindly of people who are trying to kill your friends and loved ones, but those always bothered me a little, because of the blatant propaganda. It seems very immature and petty to me. Also, the Japanese ones tend to be just a little itty bitty racist, which gets under my skin a little, since I'm Asian. And speaking of Elmer: Rabbit Fire. It's where "Duck Season!" "Wabbit Season!" come from.

Tom and jerry was some seriously racist shit. I won't lie, the cartoons where it was just the cat and mouse were great, but they always kept bringing in the maid who couldn't talk with proper grammer and they even went as far as to put blackface on the fucking cartoon.

Aside from that I loved the hell out of old looney toons, my favorites are

    1) Anything with Wil E. Coyote and Roadrunner

    2) Anything with Duck Dodgers or Marvin the Martian.

    3) Any T & J cartoon or Bugs Bunny Cartoon where one of them dressed as a cowboy, rolled a cigarette, and smoked it on camera. God I love that everyone was cool with selling smokes to kids back then.

What's Opera, Doc is among my altime favourites. I've always loved anything with Wile E. Coyote for his traps, and an extended one that comes to mind with Foghorn Leghorn and a Rube Goldberg contraption that goes on for what seems to be an eternity.

One of my favorites is the one with the Opera signer who's practicing for the opera later that night, and keeps getting interrupted by Bugs Bunny, and later on, when the singer's on stage, Bugs Bunny shows up as the conductor "Leopold".

I think I love that one even more than "What's Opera, Doc?" Anyone remember the title to the "Leopold" cartoon?

Also, about 10 years ago (maybe more?) I saw "Bugs Bunny on Broadway" (in Montréal, not on Broadway...) Basically, they show the best Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies cartoons, and there's an orchestra on stage, below the screen, playing the music Live. That was a great show.

Pretty much all the obvious great have been mentioned, but just thinking about them brings to mind so many more. The Tom & Jerry one where Tom's a concert pianist and Jerry's in the piano. Or the Tom & Jerry musketeers one. Or the Sylvester & Tweety one where he tries to stop eating boids with the help of a cat who's already quit. Or the Bugs/Sam one where Sam's an Arab with a stroppy camel. Or the Foghorn Leghorn one where he repeatedly tortures a dog on a leash by annoying him, walking out just past the limit of the leash and then, when the dog strains at the end of the tether, hitting the dog in the face with a plank/pulling out the dog's tongue and painting it blue/slapping him about a million times. Or the Road Runner one where Wile E has a catapult that malfunctions in about eight different ways, each time dumping an enormous boulder on his head.

Has everybody else seen the big compilation one where they dumped in a bunch of the best cartoons and then added a framing sequence around an awards show? Daffy stamping off-stage when his bits were met with crickets chirping is a lovely memory.

Also, I too love What's Opera Doc.

    "Oh Bwunhilde, you're so wovely."

"Yes, I know it. I can't help it."

The only modern cartoon that sticks in the mind like any of these is The Cat Came Back.

Reading over this topic makes me wonder.

Which Daffy do you think was better? The early Loony Daffy, or the later Arrogant star Daffy? My own vote goes for the latter.

Plus, we all remember Slyvester Jr. Right? Makes me wonder who his mother was? Maybe after Sylvester got over that whole canary thing, he met that girl cat who was always running from Pepe le Pew, and one thing lead to another....

Oh, you're absolutely right. They're blatant propaganda, and many are totally racist.

Some people collect teaspoons; some collect porcelain cats; my friends and I collect vintage propaganda. Culturally, it's incredible educational.

Also, the racism involved is highly ameliorated by the fact that those were the accepted values of the time. I love reading Tom Sawyer, and it isn't really racist in the sense that it wasn't racist when it was written, but would be utterly racist if someone wrote it now. Vintage racism, I suppose, is just as educational and interesting as vintage propaganda, although I only collect the latter :)
