Scouts are really tough to me as a soldier. I get killed a lot more than I care to admit by them. I know its my own fault, but I cannot play the demo anymore. With the changes to grenades I cannot seem to get any kills with them.
I know its my aim that is terrible anymore, thats what I get for playing on the xbox more than the PC though. The last real FPS I played on the computer was Q3:Rocket Arena.
The soldier takes about a second for a good scout to murder.
Yeah, as a scout as long as you surprise your target, you're probably going to kill them. The major problem with most people playing scouts is they roll like a class that can stand up in a long fire fight. For the most part, the scout is a 'harassment' class.
As an example lets use everyone's favorite map Well.
So instead of trying to stand on the middle point right after the start of the round, use your speed to run past the center control point and come around behind enemy medics. One of two things will happen: 1) The medic doesn't communicate with his heavy/solider/pryo and you get a free kill and help weaken their offense or 2) The medic either informs his healing target or you are spotted by his healing target, in which case the heavy/solider/whatever has to spend some time to chase you down. Which gives your offense the benefit of not having to face a medic+something combo.
To me this is far better use of the scout than just sitting on the control point while all manner shrapnel is being thrown at you. Then again, that's just my experience and I could be wrong.
Most of the kills I've gotten with a Scout are because people don't look behind their backs until it's too late. I usually chase down Medics and Snipers with my bat.
EDIT: Yeah Zek and Ash are pretty good Scouts. Zek pulled some crazy solo-cap-wins last week.
I don't understand why people fear the pyro so much. As a soldier I can take down 2 pyros by myself with no problem. Even with a medic they have a hard time keeping all their limbs together. They're slow, they die quickly and they have shitty range. People forget how good the soldier is.
When they shoot they drop the framerate by about 20, making them infuriatingly hard to hit. Nowadays if one targets me and I'm not a soldier, I just run.
And what's this about head shots only mattering if you're a sniper? I just kinda figured fps = go for head shots.
I think I realized part of the reason I really hate Granary: Unlike Well, there is no 'prep' phase where all classes of both teams can run up near the central cap then wait for gates to open, it's a straight out race from the beginning. So the game always starts out with a mad scout rush for both teams and never really see saws after that.
Well I enjoy due to the good combination of open/enclosed fighting spaces and the trains, but the prep phase definitely helps it.

Crits apparently increase in probability if you are doing well.
It seems strange that if a team is just good, they do well on their own, but the game rewards them immensely by decreasing spawn time and increasing chances of getting a critical hit.
But good deeds should be rewarded, and if you suck, well thats what you get I guess.
Headshots do criticals on most accounts I've seen. Usually when I'm dropping grenades on peoples' heads from above as demoman I notice this. I critical hit one guy on cap B of Granary, and the resulting explosion cleared out about 4 other people around him.
Also, as demoman the stickybombs are a lot more useful in close combat situations I find. I almost use that primarily instead of the classic launcher.

I find that I have to lead my target with rockets much much more than I would expect..

That's because they're soooooooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwww.
And if you've played Dystopia, the normal GL is very easy to smack people in the head with. Unless the person's a scout. Then fuck them I'll spam everywhere.
I'm not anti momentum crit's, I'm just sometimes saddened, because I stink, so I keep dying, and take forever to respawn, and when I do, I get crit'd to death.
Oh well,

I'm not anti-momentum, but reduced spawn times and increased capture speeds are more than enough to keep it going. Completely randomized micro-battles due to criticals are not needed.
So Sixty-40-/BrilliantInsanity and I were having a bitchfest about Sudden Death yesterday. Why does the game go into overtime on CP maps until the point returns to normal, but don't go into overtime on CTF maps so long as the intel is out of the base/being carried? Twice in one night we went into Sudden Death on 2fort while safely away with the intel, with two caps, and lost the round instead. It's like they don't want you to accomplish objectives anymore.

thats just a coincidence. the game checks for the critical shot before it even lands. you can have a critical shot that doesnt even hit anything, which makes me sad.
check the tracers out on your shots. if you have a light colored sparkle following your shot (of your teams color) then the shot is a critical shot and will score more damage. if it connects you will be rewarded with the "critical hit"
rockets i think are the easiest to spot the trail on, but you can even see it on shotgun shots if you look closely.
There's also the audio cue. Also, if you win the round, in the time before the next round all (or a very very large majority) of your shots are criticals.
Sometimes I swear I get hit by crits but there's no audio cue. Like when I get one-shotted by a demo grenade or a Sniper body shot as a Pyro, neither of which are possible without a crit.
you guys seriously can't rocket jump? instead of looking straight down and running then doing it, side strafe say to the left <- <- <- and while doing this aim to your bottom right on the ground -> -> v v v
then rocket jump. you will be astonished by the difference if you do it right. TFC oldskool skillaz 8-)

Might have to give that a try. I've never had a problem rocket-jumping in TF2 but I do it mostly for height (to get up to unreachable places), not for distance.
If all you're trying to get is height, just make sure you aim perfectly straight down while running forward (if you are aiming up at all it will kill your forward momentum), jump and fire at exactly the same time, and crouch while jumping. I do this time and time again and it never fails.

What they don't tell you is who to shoot.
Anything that moves.

Okay. I'll just leave the heavy to my team to kill.
Or the engineer to keep repairing his turrets.
Or the medic to heal them all.
Double beat'd
He said anything. That's stupid, stupid.
yeah, well, you're a towel
