My dog has died.

So my yellow lab went to the vet yesterday and got diagnosed with cancer. She has two masses - one on her stomach, another on her liver. Her blood work says it hasn't affected her liver or kidney function yet and surgery is an option. However, surgery has a 75% chance of success, limited by her weakened state.

So tomorrow I either have to drop $3,000 to possibly save my dog's life or put her to sleep.

ARRRRGH

edit 9/26 6:36 am: We elected to have the surgery. One way or another she could die, and with 3 in 4 odds who the fuck are we not to give her a chance?

Wheels up at 8am. Updates come later.

Update: There was a cancerous mass inside one of the lobes on her liver. Inoperable. The stomach could have been repaired, but she only would have lived for another month, which would have been grueling agony dying of liver failure. We chose to let her stay sedated while we gave her the euthanasia. I'm presently allowing my irish to come out, drinking whiskey with my dad and reminiscing about the good times we had with her.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner.

Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the outcome.

ah yeah that's getting up there... that's a shitty situation. i've had so many pets through the years that i've gotten almost numb to them passing. i will be pretty upset when my dog goes, he's only 5 though so he should last me into my thirties

    oh god, my thirties

    My great-grandmother died last night.

Bitch was lucid and funny as hell, right up until the end. She also lived to see man plant a flag on both the South Pole and the moon, as well as to see the invention of both the zipper and the microprocessor.

Yeah, my dog is 9 years old. He was ran over by a truck and had his hip shattered like 6 years ago. The vet said he had a 20% chance of surviving and we should put him down. We were going to if he didn't get any better but my god that tough dog healed up and is able to run and be a normal black lab. Unfortunately he has severe arthritis when it gets cold out so we do have that to worry about.

    Oh ho ho.

She totally would've laughed at that.

And Druhim, it's hard to be too sad when someone dies at an incredibly healthy and spritely 97. I mean, I will miss seeing her five or six times a year, but she lived a long fucking time, for the most part in superb health and lucidity. Fuck, she lived in a normal apartment--unassisted--until she was 91, and even then, she only moved into relatively independent assisted-living apartments.

She was a rad lady, man, no doubt...but like I said, I'm not too broken up about it.

Oh I agree, at my dad's funeral we were totally celebrating his life instead of being all mopey about his death. Still, other people handle death differently and I didn't know how you felt about it. :P
