Question: Does one need an Xbox Live Gold Membership to play online co-op?

I just have a Silver membership and when I'm in an offline campaign and set it to "Open to Friends" it still says its closed.

Supposedly, everyone right now should have 3 free days of Xbox Live Gold due to a Best Buy promotion, but apparently someone at M$ forgot to flip the switch...I just accidentally bought a month of Gold by accident trying to figure out why it wasnt working.

You have to sign up to get the 3 free days from Best Buy. I did, and got to play in a few matches. I have the Halo 3 XBL 13-month card sitting right here to be put in on Friday :).

Here's the link to register. Simple process.

EDIT: 3 levels into the campaign. For the most part it's a blast, but I do have some minor issues I'll mention when I'm done with the campaign. Also did a little multiplayer, which reminds me how average/below-average I am :(.

    Replying to Evangir regarding Cortana, mostly. Complete speculation, but;

    SERIOUS POSSIBLE PLOT SPOILERS
My take is that Cortana has been rampant for a very long time -- probably since her "birth". Keep in mind that she isn't "dumb" AI; rather, she has been allowed to harvest data at her own discretion. Her behavior late in Halo 2 was sure indicative of late-stage rampancy as well; drastic amounts of rapid database growth, disregard for protocol, and generally erratic behavior were all very telling signs that she was already coming down with the "too-much-data batshit-crazies".

Her apparent willingness to sell Earth out to Gravemind indicates that she is deeply concerned with her own survival. A smart AI has a limited shelf life (in this case, around 7 years) because it will eventually "think itself to death" by gathering more data than it can process. In her late-stage rampant state, Cortana may have taken steps to modify her own source in the hopes of staving off her inevitable demise. Perhaps more likely, the "pieces" [perhaps not the exact word] that she mentions Gravemind has taken from her may refer to portions of her database, leaving her with much more "thinking room".

Regardless, something has happened to "reset" Cortana's personality, and that almost has to be data loss (or dramatic capacity gains) on some level. The more overloaded she is with data, the more crazy she gets, and she was back to a Halo 1 level of sanity by the end of Halo 3. That puts more time on her clock.

So it doesn't really break canon.

    MIT = awesome.

    Bigger pic here: http://hacks.mit.edu/Hacks/by_year/2007/halo3_john_harvard/DSC_0010.jpg

Basically, someone put up a hack last night in Harvard Yard, putting a Spartan helmet and assault rifle on the statue of John Harvard.

    So. Awesome.

For those of you not familiar with MIT hacks, basically it's their wording for the subculture of public pranks that go on over there constantly:

Shotty Snipers is a gametype where the only two weapons on the map are shotguns and sniper rifles. It plays a lot differently, and I like it.

Not as far as I can make out. You do see the name "TRAXUS" in the environment a lot at one point, but it's more of a sly nod than an outright link.

I've been loving multi. Every time I sit down to play I have a hard time deciding between campaign and mp.
Infection is good (though it is 10x better in AvP) and Pirates is a hoot. Just regular old Team Slayer is, as always, a lovely thing. I'm really enjoying it and, short of Shotty Snipers, I've enjoyed every variation I've tried.
I really want to try the Mongoose Rocket Races.

Walk around the back top of the Scarab, I believe. The thing is -- I kept thinking that the "core" would be facing the inside, but it's not -- it's facing the outside. So walk around the outer side of things instead of the inside, if you get what I'm saying? I can't remember it exactly, but I remember it was on the "outside" instead of "inside" of the walls.

I hated that so much. I couldn't find it to save my life, and felt so dumb.

Okay, that sucked. I'm playing the campaign on heroic, and loving it. On the third mission I fight through some baddies, zoom past some more, and reach
    the roadblock
where I'm getting chewed up. Thinking I might be clever and find a way around I try walking along the edge of the cliff. As expected, I fall off the slippery slope into the abyss. Oddly, though, I catch on a little ledge about halfway down. With no way up I jump off the ledge, dropping into infinity and reloading.

    Reloading. To. The. Same. Ledge.

Thats right... somewhere on my slide to the edge of the world I moved past a checkpoint boundary. Fuck. Now I have to start the entire mission over. Good thing I'm really enjoying this game, or I'd be pissed at myself.

The campaign is excellent. Though multiplayer is just too much downtime. Its into a random game you have no control over, then booted out after 10 minutes, to wait again for another random assortment of gameplay. I miss server specific play, I want to be able to play my favourite map all day, over and over, with normal weapons, not this swords and snipers bs. Gah its annoying, I hope its not the same way with TF2.

None of my online friends are on the same page, so I've played through Sierra 117 - The Covenant about 4 times now, but I haven't gotten around to playing past that, which is starting to grow irritating :p .

    As for terminals:
The easiest one to find is on the first level that takes place on the Ark (...probably called 'the Ark'). After Guilty Spark opens the door you'll go in and see the marines milling around below, and you press a switch to turn on a bridge; you go up a ramp, and there will be a door on your left...inside will be a terminal and it'll have some fun text-y things to read... I did find another one, but it was in online co-op, so it didn't really let me read it (although I'm not sure if it's supposed to work that way, since the first terminal at least did the crazy graphics 'zooming around' thing).

...plus I don't really remember where I found it.

Has anyone found any skulls yet? I've scoured some hard to reach places, and I've still come up empty (but then again, they were a very select few places.

Multiplayer is decidedly fun when it's balanced and fresh, unfortunately the Team Slayer gametypes are either poorly chosen or bugged, because the only variants are 'normal' and 'shotties and snipers' and they're only played on Narrows, High Ground and Snowbound. Shotties and snipers wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't the gametype 80% of the time. It gets vetoed and you just get it on another map.

Hooray for gametypes that cater to one play style, that is fun! D:

Also, the end of the first level is decently fun, but the terrain and enemies make it a pain on a standard definition TV with splitscreen co-op. And Jackal snipers do not need to be hidden in camoflaged sniper nests, damnit.

The question for the day (minor-ish campaign spoiler):
How do they expect you to take down the scarab if there's no more rockets or explosives around and the damn thing doesn't want to come near the crane platforms? Is there actually a physical way to climb up the legs or do you just wait it out or something?

Personally, I'm a bit disappointed at some of the cliche and corny bits of the story that interupt the otherwise decent narrative (of what I've played so far).

Well me and my roommate went out and bought it this afternoon. It's weird - after all this about pre-orders and midnight launches and countdowns and whatnot, we just hit up Wal-Mart at about 3 in the afternoon and they just had stacks of copies. It seemed almost too easy. Also, once we got back, he started singing the Halo chorus really quietly when I opened the case - except I didn't realize it was him at first, and thought it was coming from the heavens or something.

    Although I'm only at
    the roadblock,
I absolutely love this game. Gameplay, graphics, weapons and vehicles - I'm hooked. Ripping off turrets and carrying them around? Yes please.

During one of the cinemas, Guilty Spark says something about "oh wait, the ship you rode to Earth wasn't the Ark, this huge thing is". Plus how that incomplete Halo pops out of the center, it wasn't in storage; it was actively being built.

Not bad.. not bad at all. Great campaign (very epic!)-- much better than the first two games! Now that I've completed the single-player, it's time to dive into and have fun with the multiplayer (until it starts to piss me off because I take every kill and death personal because I'm high strung and I have stress issues).

    Definitely worth the purchase!

It's hard to decide which game had a better single player experience: Halo 3 or Bioshock. Fuck it.. I loved 'em both!

BTW, I can't wait till someone manages to copy down what the terminals had in them. I only managed to find two but I was kinda confused as to what they said (and who wrote it). I'm sure there's a lot of little things that are just waiting for players and fans to pick out of the game.

Also, what's this I hear about a surprise? I'm not sure I heard anything about that.
