Axis seems to be better in the late game when everyone is cranking out tanks. The Allies only have Fireflies and AT guns / 17 pounders to compete. I know that's what I usually fear when I happen to be Allies on huge games like that. [EDIT] Not to mention the goddamn Henschel's Strafing Run. I love that late in big games when I happen to be playing PE and I'm inevitably floating 1000 munitions. [EDIT2] Oh, and duh: supertanks. So yeah, just survive until late.
I made the mistake one time of building a lot of artillery (for the hell of it) as the lone British player in a 4v4. I should've told my teammates to try to slow down the Axis infantry blob long enough to let me crank out Fireflies. Eventually the Axis just rolled right through us.
I've never even played a 4v4. I don't even want to imagine what kind of artillery clusterfuck that thing turns into. The closest I've come is a 3v3 I think I played a long time ago. I believe that was resolved when one side steamrolled the other with a bunch of mega tanks.
I'll play one 4v4 a month just for the hell of it. It is fun on certain maps where everything is funnelled into huge killzones. It is a lot of artillery and blobbing, but whatever.
As a tip to my last opponent; don't build tank traps before the 3 minute mark. That is conduct unbecoming of an NCO.
It was one of those games where you are pushing forward so fast that you would expect your level 6 opponent to have some heaven sent grand scheme. Even as I was Stug raping the American HQ, I was expecting 2 Pershings to arrive. I thought my enemy would be that devious, for I am always paranoid of the early game armour counter.
You could fix that by playing more! Or by telling Relic to hire someone who has heard the word "netcode" outside of a nightmarish acid trip. Honestly I love CoH but knowing that there's a chance I'm going to have to sit around while Relic Online pretends to look for a game, while in reality it downloads porn with my connection or something, well... saps my vitality. Then again, I'm about to go off and play, so there's that.
I seem to get in a rut when playing long games vs. good players. Had a game on Hinterdam vs. a level 9 PE. He actually didn't seem that great, but the map is annoying enough that he stayed alive. In the midgame I made a pretty boneheaded decision -- went armor company when I knew he had gone tank hunters. Duh, the Pershing is next to useless. (I had so much more manpower than him that I was able to build 2, which both died, haha) Should have gone for the Calliope to fight his 2 or 3 infantry groups around the map.
But the problem is I don't change my strategy enough. AT guns and snipers worked okay, but I kept cranking out riflemen. Should've switched over to a machinegun to slow down his infantry. Don't you hate it when you finish a game and think of one or two things that really would've helped? It's like you have to slow yourself down and stop trying to desperately capture points because you just lose to attrition that way.
...And 2.317 is out. The last patch before the game goes live.
Gameplay
- Removed some incorrect modifiers for Wehrmacht AT guns vs Wehrmacht tanks with armoured skirts
- AT guns are no longer seen at range with Panzer Elite Tank Awareness
- British Mortar Emplacement only requires two soldiers to recrew. Can be captured by two enemy soldiers.
- Small arms fire does more damage to mobile British Command Trucks.
Dareth, I hope whatever co-worker you have responsible for CoH balance dies in a fucking car fire.
Had a rough game last night as PE against US. He went airborne with recoilless rifles, started with riflespam, but then got a couple M8s and a few units from the Weapon Support Center. Pain in the ass, especially on that map. Took the middle and did some sorties against me when I went to the outside VPs.
Never really settled on a strategy. Probably could've used a mortar HT or a critical mass of either armored cars or Marders. Hard to beat that kind of combined arms without bringing in some overpowered units.
Also reached level 8 as British, but rejoiced when I was matched against a high level PE player to knock my level back down. ;-) Now that I think about it, I didn't even check to see if I'm down to 7. Anyway, my Axis factions are still at level 6 and need some work.

I'm 100% serious.
Hehe it's so cute to see people posting things that suggest anyone at Relic is working on balance. I think we all know that it's just a bunch of programmers changing whatever variables catch their whimsy. "Balance" is a term that Relic feels is best left to companies like Blizzard.
I had a game today where my truck deployed, but it could still move, but not build anything. I played the whole game with 2 tommy squads and a lieutenant, then commandos. On Beaux Lowlands.
Yeah the other guy was just screwing around so it wasn't pure torture, but it was funny to see.
I absolutely love this game, but unfortunately I can't play with my friends anymore. I'm not sure if this has been covered before, and with search being down I would rather not search the entire thread.
My friend and I used to play this game a lot, but ever since a patch or two ago, it won't let us join a game together. Every time one of us tries to join a game the other one is in we get a "Cannot connect to all players" error, and his name will have a red X next to it in lobby. It should be noted that we can each join pretty much any other game independently, but as soon as one of us is in the game, we can't get in because we can't connect to one another. We're not in the same building, on the same router yada, yada either. After my fair share of googling and forwarding ports, we still cannot get into a game with one another. (Forwarded ports 6112 and 9100? I can't remember) This happens with two of the guys I used to play with a while back; we picked it up again after the expansion hit.
My question is thus: is there any other fix to this situation besides forwarding ports, disabling firewalls, and antivirus protection? We've also gone so far as to jumping on Hamachi and trying to start a LAN game, but even that doesn't work as it seems to still go through RelicOnlines system. Well, that or we're doing it wrong which is entirely possible as they seemed to have changed the way you access LAN games. Or... is this problem with RelicOnlines system and nothing we can do about it?
Again I apologize if this has been covered but I appreciate any help you can throw at us.
That's really weird. You could try the team automatch beta and see if that will match you two up. If it does, then you'll be fine once the patch comes out.

Blizzard has unlimited budget, time, and resources. Relic doesn't. Blizzard is the exception, not the rule.

I blame THQ.
I remember reading somewhere OF was released six months ahead of schedule because some retard exec wanted it out at the same time as WiC. So the open beta was cut short with glaring massive issues that have haunted this game ever since.

Don't get me wrong, I play CoH more than Warcraft III these days. It's just not because Relic does such an amazing job at balancing their game.
Man, I just played an epic game with my less-than-perfect (but improving) friend. 2 Americans who went Airborne and Infantry up against me as PE and my buddy as Wehrmacht. Degenerated into epic tank battle at the end. We win.
I got Company of Heroes with my graphics card but it didn't come with the expansion. Once I get it in working condition (by Sunday) I'd love to play and get some gameplay tips.

It came out in September, when it originally supposed to come out mid-November. This didn't affect the development adversely, as we were pretty much wrapped up and ready to fly off on vacation.
You're actually better off blaming one of these twofellas.
I'd go into detail, but I don't think I'm allowed.
This game is really cool. It feels a lot more fluid than most RTSes do, and you have to change up your strategies it seems. Being familiar with Dawn of War helped a bit, but DoW is basically CoH Lite. I'll have to look up some strategies online because I'm getting crushed by the AI in skirmishes.
Well, got sync/drophacked for the first time ever, and it was at the end of an extremely long game on Gilroy's Harbor. *sigh*
I was playing random automatch and got set against a new friend I had made that night, so the game was still good fun.
Humorously, the next game I played was a 2v2 on Hedgerow Siege and got the same cheater. He tried to drop when I started pushing to a win but the game caught it and continued.
Bleh, time for another break. I'm pleased with my play and not getting sick of the game, which is the problem, because I can't stop playing it! I think I'll give it a couple of weeks and try the team automatch balance patch when it comes out.
So I just got this, and I have to say that while the vehicles are still kinda annoying, they are much improved. Hell, the little dotted-line path thing alone makes manuevering easier.
So far I've just done the tutorials and a bit of the campaign. Seems nifty indeed, and by the end of that first PE level it's just lovely how littered the place is with airplanes.
I love the integrated browser thing they've got going on, though how the hell they're going to deal with future expansions is beyond me. 10 gigs of space isn't nothing for one (well, two stuck together) game.
I played my first Extreme AI 1v1 game ever last night and won. I was all kinds of surprised because when I first picked up CoH I would get brutally raped by the normal AI. Of course I was playing as the OF Germans vs Americans so that might have helped.
What is online play like? I tend to fear the hell out of online RTSes, for I rarely have fun getting rushed. Is there a fun little PA community like DoW has that won't abuse my anus?
There should be a larger one, but I'm always up for game. I think most of the PA players (ha, all 2 of them) are more in it for fun than burly man rapage. The ranking system actually WORKS online, so levels 1-2 are actually crappy players, 7-8 are intermediate, up to 12+ where players make few mistakes.
Rushing never works even at high-level play, & you are almost never out of the game until it is truly over. You will always have dozens of ways of coming back.
I've heard people bitch about unit balance. I know those goddamn British trenches are a terrible, terrible thing to try and fight. Apparently there is some early German tank rush as well. Is it as bad as the official boards would make one believe? Not that it matters, I'll probably play online tonight as a way to pass the time waiting on Soulstorm and Army of Two.

If you can consistently defeat the normal AI, then you understand the concept of the victory point multiplayer well enough to get started. The game has an ELO-based level system, so you will only be going up against newbies. If you've watched any replays and have a good grasp of all the factions against the AI, then you are already well ahead of the game anyway.
[EDIT] I wouldn't worry about level 1 players building fast Panzer4s or doing a scout car rush or anything. They'd beat everyone so quickly that they'd level up out of your range. Just click automatch, pick a faction if you're best with one of them, and go. For trenches, ignore them or get flames and grenades.

It's a tradeoff and can go either way. I think it depends on how many British players are in the game to determine how well Allies do late.
