Any idea if the 'still elite' list is more solo-able than before? I've heard they all took pretty substantial level hits.
I want Pyrewood Village to stay as hard as it is/was.

Well, I was running around with a level 70 when I made that list. The Pyrewood villagers were all around levels 12-13. It's been a long time since I went through there as Horde, so I don't remember if they were always around that level.
$10 seems cheap to me. They don't want people changing their name three times a day. It's not a "this automated service has an actual value of $10" thing, it's trying to make it costly enough to deter people from using it too much...
And man we have TONS of people who will take advantage of this. People in the guild who named an alt something stupid and then ended up leveling it higher, people with non-RP names who want better ones for their own reasons or because we won't let them in the guild with a stupid name and the GMs wouldn't change it when they reported it, etc. I might change my hunter's name (Merika) because I'm tired of everyone making comments about it sounding like "America" whenever I log in....
I hope it at least has the common courtesy to WARN YOU that their name has changed.
Like sending a Blizzard mail to your friends and guildies with a warning "*PERSON* has changed their name to *DUDE*. Please make a note of it."
I really don't understand how you convince people to pay for a name change they made the choice for good or bad for the name
I'm still waiting for the $20 gender and race change, so I can make my Draenei female Paladin a Human Male, and drop $30 total to name him Traugot like my original Paladin.

The Son of Arugal I saw was still level 20.
The Sons of Arugal are supposed to be level 24 elites.

Intriguing. Tresjunior was a bank alt to Tresjin, was originally planned to stay at level 2 by the Exodar AH. It's now level 26 and on the track to endgame. I think a more Draenei-ish name is in order.

Fuck that, I want the $30 defection transfer.
Any Alliance character can defect to the Horde, and vice versa.
I guess it would be pretty hard to come up with a convincing story background for it, though...what with changing your race and everything.
For the most part I am happy with the names/genders and classes I choose for all my characters I play with
When it comes to names I either used the random ones or just names I thought of .
The names I have are Katherissi, Kerranarash {the only one that I am still regretting}, Khristine, Aekold, Jainzar, Tanitha, Korhil, Laaki, and Kaelyn .
I might change my blood elf hunter to be a troll or orc but I would have to think about it.
As for switching sides I am going to pass I have played alliance and horde on several severs and for the most part I like the horde more
My warrior Kerranrash was a bank for a few because of his name the fact I used him to play in the 20/29 and 30/29 pvp brackets
Now he is level 67 and hiding due to harassment to tank instances he is not of a level or equiped to do

I'd never change my BE hunter to an orc or troll.
The only reason I didn't roll a Hunter for so long was because I hate the way orcs and trolls look, and Tauren just seem too big to be hunters. So when Blood Elves could be hunters I was like WOOT!
I tried Prot grinding the stuff in Hearthglen at about an even-level, but realized they were elites. This change couldn't have come a month or two ago?

Nope it's the next month I think or whenever 2.3 drops
2.3 I would ballpark at mid-to-late November, maybe later to catch the holiday rush (2 weeks off!? MUST PLAY WOW AND ANNOY PEOPLE!).
That being said, Sunwell will be timed in an interesting location based on the fact that Wrath is tentatively coming out around this time next year (again, holiday rush). Probably around March/April.
Also, I really want to see what they're plan is to help Low Pop realms. Besides merging realms I can't really think of any reason Blizzard could entice people to play on them.
They should just combine 10 or so realms into 2 and fucking get it over with. Anyone who doesn't like it can have a free transfer wherever they want. There's a legitimate desire for low pop servers, I think, but not for like 12 low population realms and 8 complete ghost towns.
When I switch over to my horde alt, there are 5-6 different realms that seem like they show up as reccomended, at different times depending on how many people are on.

I've been levelling up a rogue on the test server and it's actually pretty weird going through all these newbie areas and not seeing a single other player at all except when I go to Stormwind and see plenty of "LFM ZA" in chat.
So does this mean all the people with the poor choice of Legolas or whatever they added to it will wait in vain hope for a chance at getting the prize itself?

thanks to all the people who answered me about farming for raids and running old instances yesterday =p I'm a warlock, to answer your question about that... I was in the top guild on one server, switched servers and was in the top guild on another... but never really 'fit in' in any guild I was in... probably partially due to the fact that I played with my GF and I think that pisses some people off =p
I should come back just for pvp, since I really don't want to adhere to a raiding schedule anymore... either that or just join a guild that's big enough that they don't force me to raid multiple times a week. I wouldn't mind raiding on a schedule once or twice a week...
I'm probably halfway attuned for black temple already, but I forget. I quit the night before gruul was majorly nerfed and my guild subsequently killed him, which was a part of some attunement or another - SSC? which they did away with... I think I was always really good at playing my class, but somewhat bad at working my skill in with some boss mechanics (which sorta means I was bad at my class). I was great at optimizing damage but not so much at being in the right place at the right time and stuff. still, fights like thaddius and that guy you had to dance for in naxx were among the most fun encounters I played... I was also a cheap bastard and only used the bare minimum of consumables... I tried to justify it / mask it by still coming in at or near the top in the damage meters, but I think I was still resented for it...

I was getting 1700 xp a kill in Sethekk halls on my Pally last night. Holy crap. The final boss gave me 5K XP. That was sweet.
I hope to do some more of that. Questing on my pally is the least fun I've had playing WoW in a while. All three of my other characters are so much easier to quest with.
I have a sneaking supsicion that by the time they release the levelling improvement, my Shaman will already be 50. Hell, maybe I'll push hard to be 60 by the end of November, so if the patch cycle takes another 4-5 weeks I can say that I did all of my characters without their charity.
ITT: Forar lets pride get in the way of not grinding out a full 20/30 more levels.

Yeah, my mage & rogue are already at 50, and they got full bars of rested exp... been trying to hold off on levelling them, but they are fun to play. But getting my lock up to 70, and maybe my shammy before the patch is more likely.

Man, when I started my Rogue, I pretty much told myself "Well, they're not doing anything about this massive grind. Might as well get it out of the way." and just as I hit sixty-one, they announce that shit. The only character I can see getting some use out of the leveling changes is my 46 Shadow Priest, who I kind of want to twink.
I'm kind of surprised they just realized the grind is too long, though. I don't know if I'll be able to go up to 80.

You'd think they would have addressed the issue of 1-60 grind a bit closer to the release of TBC. But I guess now they have a reason to attract to people (and those of us with alts) to continue with the mention of WotLK.
Also, presumably they still hope to entice new customers into the game... and lowering the long, lonely grind to 60 is a good way of keeping those hypothetical new customers interested... especially since the lower levels are more "minorly multiplayer", as opposed to massively.

My guess is that they simply felt that the 1-60 was okay, 1-70 wasn't too bad, but that 1-80 may simply be the breaking point for some people as we slowly grind our way up to that triple digit figure. Now, 1-70 will be closer to the 1-60 climb in time (I believe), and thus, you'll get more abilities in the same period /played, which will be even more exciting for new players and alts.
I love even levels. LOVE THEM. First thing I do is hearth to Shat'rah, portal to a convenient town, pick up any banked gear for that level and start training. This is doubly awesome because I then usually park the alt for 5-10 days to build up some more rested, so when I pick that alt back up, they're more powerful than I remember them being.

This is something that I feel is unfortunate in a way, for the new players. I still fervently believe that levelling is the best part of the game, and this will just make that even shorter before players end up at the endgame where PvE becomes pretty much just raiding.

Yeah, it is unfortunate, but it is something that Blizz can't really fix... most people levelling up at the moment are levelling alts, their (our) attitude seems to be hurry, up, get to outlands, don't group, just solo, etc... leaving very little patience for the new player. (Not counting the people that beg/buy runs through dungeons, arrrgh...). Must be a little discouraging to the new player. They hopefully get channelled to the newer servers, where everyone is levelling, but there are no guarantees...
But there is nothing better to break up the ol' grind than a pleasant instance run with 3-4 other people of the appropriate level... too bad those are so rare in the olde worlde these days.

But Blizzard hasn't exactly hindered that mindset with the quality of the Outlands gear. Sure, the 'gear gap' needed to be closed significantly, but in doing so, they really just made it an even bigger incentive to skip the first 58 levels wherever possible in order to hit the Outlands and start picking up uncommons and rares on par with 'old world epics'. You can probably double your HP and add at least 50% to your dps just by getting into the 58-60 range and AH'ing as much "of the bandit/sorceror/etc" gear as you can. There's no reason to worry about gear until the high 50's at all; quest, hit the AH for cheap upgrades and instance where possible, sure, but it's really just the lead up to the 'good stuff'.
At least, that's how I see it, and while I enjoy levelling characters, I really enjoy getting them to the level cap, and then gearing them up and seeing what I can do with them. Being first in a Karazhan run on my Rogue for damage done? *yawn* To be expected. Being first on my mage, or my hunter, or my poor little warlock? Ohhh yeah! Taking a priest with 0 points in holy and 41 in shadow, swapping inmy healing gear and managing to heal through fights on a Steamvaults run that have people complimenting the work? Glorious.

I'm probably gonna catch a lot of ridicule for this.
I'm running out of books to read (about halfway through Cryptonomicon, which is the last one from my most recent spree), and since I had enjoyed the War of the Ancients trilogy, I was wondering about other Warcraft fiction to pick up during my next spree. Are there any others that are worth reading, or are the vast majority pretty bad (like most Star Wars books I've seen)?

Go out and get the Warcraft collection. It's Day of the Dragon, The Last Guardian, Lord of the Clans, and Of Blood and Honor, all bound into one book. I think Border's sells it for ~$18.00.
edit: To elaborate on the books a little more.
- Day of the Dragon = Deals with Rhonin (you'll see him in WotLK), Deathwing, and Alexstrasza
- The Last Guardian = Khadgar goes to study under the guidance of Medivh, tower is spooky, some shit happens.
- Lord of the Clans = Baby Thrall is found by some human, who ends up being a dickbag. He meets some more people, namely Drek'Thar and Grom Hellscream
- Of Blood and Honor = Tirion Fordring meets an Orc one day, they have a tea party and then shit hits the fan. He becomes an exile.
Most of these characters are in game, in fact, Tirion has a nice long quest line in EPL that I hear gives some nice rewards. The books are really nice, I may just re-read them over the summer.
I enjoyed the Halo books. The first, third and Fourth were enjoyable, and the second was okay as far as game novelizations go. But I grew up with the novelized version of Master Blaster, so my nostalgia and tatse may be suspect.

From everything I've heard, the Halo novels are essentially required reading to understand the bare-bones story from the games.
