No, I'm not talking about the lovable yet frustratingly difficult to beat game from the Far East

Nor am I talking about the lovable yet frustratingly difficult to make out with man from the Far East

No... I refer to the lovable yet frustratingly easy to fuck up OS from Finland.... Linux!

Last saturday I downloaded and installed Ubuntu, and I must say that I'm extremely impressed so far. It's not nearly as difficult as I believed it would be. Everything is quite straight-forward and easy to locate. Shit, I've only had to reformat once so far...

Yeah, anyway... let's talk about linux.

i have been running ubuntu for about a year now

and it hasn't been too bad, i've learned some things

although, i occasionally have to boot into my XP partition to do some programming or the occasional game

the best part about ubuntu is that it doesn't make my fan run 95% of the time like XP
    (see, my computer is shitty)

Also lately I've been playing Eve Online heavily, but their Linux client is still unstable, so I've had to boot Windows for the first time in months. So I usually just end up running Linux full-screen in VMWare, then minimizing when I want to game.

It works surprisingly well, with the caveat that Windows can't see my main hard drives for some reason, so I have to reboot when I need to access files stored on them.

there was a hardware simulator designed for windows that i had to use to help me learn how to program in assembly language

plus access, even if it's not really programming

    if x = windows and y = linux

solve for why is (y) better than (x)
The problem here is that I don't think Y is better than X or vice versa.

They each have their awesomeness and their lameness.

Example; With windows I have to beat the shit out of it in order to get it to look the way I want (transparent title bars, dock bar, min/max/close on left, etc.). With linux it took me about 15 minutes.

However, with windows I can plug in a 5-button mouse and it works. With linux I have to beat the shit out of it for a while to get it to recognize all of the mouse buttons.

Those are just two examples I've encountered in the past week, but I think they pretty much demonstrate what I'm seeing.

They each have their ups and downs.

I've got Ubuntu installed on the second hard drive in my computer, but it's been a long while since I played with it after I had some issues getting the dual monitors to get along with it. Maybe I'll mess around with it if Cal can convince me of how awesome Ubuntu is

And I do not care about Linux, because I'm never on a PC long enough to care what operating system I'm using.

have you tried ubuntu 7.04? I've seen on the forums that people use it on sub-1ghz systems.

You may have better luck with Xubuntu, which is designed for weak systems.

Normally I would use it for equal parts internet/IM/gaming/goofing off but the computer I've been using lately isn't very powerful at all so a lot of games are out of the question.
