Xbox live connectivity issues

ever since i bought my 360, ive been having issues with the connection. The most specific problem is that i cannot stay connected without going through an entire song and dance:

1. I start the console
2. Console autosigns me into my account and connects me.
3. I select the game i want to play and start it(it can be an arcade title or a full title)
4. I attempt to start the matchmaker (or server list, depending on what it calls for). Either im connected briefly and then disconnected, or i cannot even connect.
5. I go back to the dashboard, where it now says "Connect to live" and reconnect.

Finally, it stays connected, but im getting tired of this routine. i dont feel like going through all this each time i want to play something.

Another issue is that whenever i try to look at another players Gamercard in game, the console signs me out saying: "you are logged into another console."

what are the problems and how do i fix them?

Are you going through a router?

The most common issue people have when connecting to XBOX Live is having the proper ports open. You can test this by going to the system blade>network settings>test connection. The result you're looking for here is NAT. If it's set to moderate or strict, try this http://live.tommccann.net/. Even if NAT comes back as open you may want to follow that guide just to make sure you have your router set up properly.

If that doesn't fix your problem, you'll need to post the connection test report and tell us a little more about your network setup.

okay, im stuck on step one.

    When it asks for my

    IP Address
    Subnet Mask
    Gateway
    DNS

im not sure what to give it, because my router brand is not listed. Where would i go to find that info for a Dynex wired router?

Is this your router? 192.168.0.1 is where you will find your router's settings. This also has a link to newer firmware if you haven't done that in a while.
