Woo!!

Kart Rider.

The Korean MMO kart racer sensation has hit in America and we can all be a part of it.

The game is now available for download, go over to the site, sign in, grab the file, and race!

While at the DigitalLife expo this afternoon (which was terrible, be happy you didn't go) I had the chance to check out the game in person, its going to be a lot of fun.

Yay cardboard cutouts!!

kart1.jpg

What is Kart Rider?

Crazyracing Kartrider (Korean:크레이지레이싱 카트라이더) is a South Korean online multiplayer racing game, developed by Nexon, which earns revenues by selling virtual items for the game through its website, including different types of car and spraypaint. Such cars include fantasy and real-life models of cars, with Nexon's collaboration with companies such as MINI (Korea). It has been confirmed for an Open Beta release of October 2nd, 2007, 6pm USA time [6]. In America, the game has the slogan: "Catch my drift!"

Yay.. um.. matchmatking!!

kart2.jpg

The game is pretty much Mario Kart, except with out the Mario characters. It's cute, its fast, it has spinning cube item boxes, and it's online. It's sort of Gun Bound, except a kart racer game.

Who's in?

Why should you play?

It knocked Starcraft off the #1 spot on the Korean charts, its just that amazing.

The plan now is to set up a PA league and destroy the world with our kart riding skills!

Go watch and find out what you will be experience will be like once you install it later today.

I heard about this game on GFW radio, I'm down for this.

    some fun facts

    - There are an estimated 15,000,000 users of the Korean version of Kartrider

    - Over 25% of South Koreans have played the game at least once.

    - Was the first game to beat Starcraft in the Korean and Chinese online game market.

I'm down to see what it's like. I assume the whole micro-transactions to upgrade your rider will be part of it like in Korea?

So true, but it is from Korea. So true, it looks JUST LIKE Mario Kart, minus the Mario.

So explain to me how, out of all the items they had to show, they picked the one directly ripped off from Mario Kart to display as the "Unique Item".

It's kind of fun. I went on a date with a girl in Seoul a few years ago and she brought me into an internet cafe and we played this game. It reminded me a lot of Mario Kart. I'm curious to see how well it will do in the US.

Played the US open beta earlier this year, was fun even though they hadn't brought over a lot of content from the Korean version at that point. It seems some of the mechanics are better than in MKDS, like gaining boost from long drifts (similar to Mario Kart: Super Circuit on the GBA), and having to at least manually target and lock on with some of the items (in team mode, it's possible to lock onto your own teammates...). There's also the option to play without items altogether, which I can only assume is standard for tournament play.

    EDIT: A gameplay video

Someone's going to have to explain to me how an MMO kart racer works. Is it like the gran turismo's where you just upgrade your kart between matches and stuff?

Yep. You race to win virtual currency, which you use to buy characters, karts, parts, decals etc. Some stuff will boost your stats, some are just for looks. Don't know if it'll be like Albatross18 where most items can only be purchased by putting real money into the game, which, well, sucks if those items give any serious advantage. Then again, the game itself is free and they have to make money somehow.

Items are the defining feature of Kart games. If you want more control over the random elements, that's fair, but shutting off items in a racer is like prohibiting special moves in a fighter.

I have to wonder... if you take all of the MMOs available in Korea, and use the "# of players" stat they all use, and then factor in the actual population of Korea... how many factors greater will the # of players be? :P

Well I'm quite sure there are people that play more then one game at a time considering that non of them have subscription costs per month.

Oh I know that... but what I'm wondering is, there are a -ton- of these free MMOs in Korea. Most of them report having more than a million players, many with over 5 mil. If you added these up, and compared it to the population of South Korea (around 49 mil), how much higher would it be? :P
