I thought it was some kind of computer trickery at first so here's another version with a top quality soundtrack (watch the top one first though, the second one is just for you despicable cynics out there)
I can only see it as counterclockwise if I convince myself it's inverted, but it doesn't work if I try to rationalize it. I don't actually see it going backwards either way.
It's easier to see the shadow as moving in the direction you want. If I cover the top half and only see the shadow and legs, I can even see the legs going one way and their shadow going the other (weird). Lining them up in my mind lets me change the direction while watching it. It also helps to look at the bottom of the foot and its shadow if you can't line them up, because they are so close together.
I just got the spinning girl to go counter clockwise. What... what the fuck.

you ever watch mst3k
you ever tricked your eyes into seeing crow sitting facing you instead of the screen
same principle
its a flat silhoutte, so there's no information on what the near and far points of the image are, and if you reverse the near and far points in your mind, the image rotates in the opposite direction

I saw it clockwise until I focused on the shadow, now it's counterclockwise.
I can't get it to switch back though. My head is going to asplode!
EDIT: No, the toe point thing Knob talked about works. If you focus on that point and say "the toe is pointing towards me or away from me" it switches from clockwise to counter.
Top Christmas timewasting tip:
You can make the top of angel chimes do the same thing as the spinning girl. Its even more surreal when its a real object and you convince your brain its spinning the other way, then glance down at the rest of the chimes and the damn thing switches direction.

Holy fuck that spinning girl image is ridiculous. My mind could not grasp the concept that she's spinning counter-clockwise for almost an hour now. I'd been telling myself that the leg is opposite of what I think, her toes are pointing away when my mind sees towards, etc. Finally I used one hand to cover up everything but the shadow, then spun my finger (with the toes) counter-clockwise, slowly lifting up my hand until her own foot was doing it, then just removed my hand completely. I saw it for a split second and my eyes widened...she was going clockwise again the moment I lost focus but god damn - I thought I was going insane for not being able to see it earlier.
I was screwing around in GIMP to find some way to invert all the layers and I had the image on page one in the background, and it started going counterclockwise.

well, with the spinning girl, your eyes can see her going both ways. however, if you reference the shadow, she can only logically be going one way because of when the shadow appears. Since we don't see the full shadow and jsut one swing of it, the shadow must be shown with the leg is behind her and when she is lowest to the ground.
or at least, i think thats the way its gotta be. i could be comepletely wrong

oh now, ive seen it switch directions. i just think because of when and how the shadow is appearing in relation to the bobbing and spinning of the girl, it can only logically be going one way.

also I think what really throws people off is what they perceive as her shadow, and they think that she can't be spinning the other way because that wouldn't make any sense
it's not a shadow, it's a reflection off a shiny surface
that may seem like a trivial difference, but it actually makes a huge difference because the angle of view would be different for each way she's rotating, and that's why her reflection actually does work whichever way she's spinning
In psych class today we had some pretty neat ones. I'm trying to find an opponent pair optical illusion that depletes one of the sets of cones by staring at it for a minute or so, forcing everything to flip (ie, a green and black canada flag with a dot in the middle makes a red and white canada flag after the image is removed)
Worst comes to worst I'll try and make my own tommorow, despite the potential for failure.
Essentially, at the level of the ganglion cells, your vision is broken down into opponent pairs (red and green, for example, are sensed by the same cells, only use different frequencies to transmit the different colours. Same goes for black and white, and yellow and blue. (Before anyone jumps on me, I realise that the conical level has an RGB breakdown, but that has little to do with this effect)) If one colour in a specific opponent pair is used too much, it becomes exhausted, and won't use that frequency for a while after that. It still sends signals, just not that signal, therefore, your brain sees everything that was black as white, red as green, and yellow as blue (and vice versa for all of those.)
ALSO, I am by no means guaranteeing this as the absolute truth. I'm probably missing something as im just a 1st year student.

Then I watched the shadow for a while and then saw it clearly go counter-clockwise.
Now I can't see it clockwise again.
I miss it.
does the .gif just spin both ways to fuck around with me or something

I can switch back and forth like that.
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!

i can sort of see how the toes look right both ways but i don't see how you get over her leg blatantly spinning clockwise
Steam
Look closer.
Also, if I stop looking at it for a while and then go back to it, it always starts as clockwise.

But now...now I can see in to the future.
Edit: It did it again!
you are
It is going the other way. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it myself.
Edit: Just do something else like play solitare while it's in your peripheral vision. Don't try and see it - when it flips it'll grab your attention.
but like i said im probably completely wrong.

This.
This has broken my mind.

I demand a t-shirt version!
Is your mind blown?
Wow.
I'm going to patent wearing pants.
Given the state of the patent system, it would probably be easy to get. I doubt you could defend it, though.

Ok, stare at the dot for about a minute, then stare at a white piece of paper, or webpage, or something white.
