Going to Seattle, need advice on where to stay...

...and what to do.

My wife and I are going to Seattle at the end of October from the 27th or 28th to the 30th. We'd like to to all the main things, such as Pike Place and EMP, and are going to a concert at what used to be the Fenix Underground on the 29th.

The main question is where should we stay? I'm looking for a place that's ~$100/night, preferably a shade cheaper. This is the main issue any any help here would be very much appreciated.

The other question is: now that we've reached parity, where are some good commercial areas that we should visit, particularly places with game stores? I want to pick up Metroid Prime 3 and (hopefully) Guitar Hero 3 on the Wii.

If you can help with a motel/hotel, thanks in advance. If you can offer other ways we can waste our time in Seattle, thank you very much.

Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!

Under the EMP is the sci-fi museum, which is awesome. The Underground Tour is also really cool, at least back when I went on it, it was. I'm not really knowledgable about the hotels though. When you live somewhere you don't really need to stay at a lot of hotels.

My wife and I stayed at the Moore Hotel twice and really liked it. I think it was just a bit more than $100 a night. If you can, get room 730. It's really neat. It's at the end of a hall and you don't have any neighbors. It's almost on it's own floor, because it's 3 or 4 feet higher than the rest of the 7th floor. It has this crazy little door to get into it. There's this cut out part of the ceiling that has stars in it. I'm tired, I'll try to put up some pics we took later that will make more sense.

On the negative side, they don't have wifi.

If you went to PAX there are a looot of hotels around the convention center which is walking distance from westlake center and maybe 20 min walk too pike. You can take stairs down too the pier as well with the aquarium.

That place sounds pretty cool. I've looked at the Yahoo reviews and they were mosty positive.

Is the Moore Hotel in a good area?

It's in a great area (safe neighborhood but it can get a little noisy on weekend nights); about 2 blocks from Pike Place and the piers (the aquarium is near here as well). There are a lot of great restaurants nearby and shopping. There is a mall (I believe it's called The Westlake Center) very close that would, most likely, have your game store(s) and there is even a GameWorks in that area. The hotel staff is very, very nice and helpful. Even though they don't have wifi in the rooms, they do have a computer in the lobby for guests to use. We've definitely done that when we needed to check a bus schedule or an address.

The first time we visited we walked from our hotel to the EMP, and it only took about 20 minutes give or take. Of course, there is public transportation that will take you anywhere you want to go, and during certain times of the day you can ride for free in various areas.

    Hope that helped! Have fun!

If you are going to the fenix (which is a great club) on a friday or saturday night they have a deal with clubs in the area. You pay one cover fee and you get to hit them all up, its a great deal as you sample a lot of different clubs and musical styles.

Touristy things to do, woodland park zoo is cool place to walk around and see animals, the pacific science center (near the emp and scifi museum) is also fun even for adults and there is an Imax theater there, the space needle naturally. I'd also suggest walking the pier, seeing those huge ships is always intimidating. If you don't mind a ferry ride or a long drive you might want to see if there is a naval ship up for touring. I got to go on the Abraham Lincoln (a carrier) once and that thing is massive.

I think it might be fun for you guys to do Ride the Ducks. :D It might be slightly cold, but it won't be too bad with jackets and thingys. I know it's touristy, but it's lots of fun and you will be hitting all the tourist spots in downtown Seattle area.

The ducks are terribly obnoxious. I wonder how much the drivers have to drink to erase the shame.

The Ducks would probably be fun if they didn't play that obnoxious music.

There is an EB/Gamestop in the bottom level of Pacific Place, which is two blocks East of Westlake Center. I believe there is also one in the bottom level of Westlake Center, unless it was closed in the last year or so. Honestly though, I think they're both pretty lackluster. A big store (I am thinking Circuit City) out at a full-size mall should have a better selection and won't be trying to pawn off used games in poor shape for 95%+ of the new price on you.

The underground tour is pretty interesting. If you like planes, be sure to check out the Museum of Flight.

FWIW, the Crowne Plaza is grossly overpriced.

Well, it looks like we're staying at the Ramada Inn Downtown, as we got a deal through BCAA and my wife didn't seem to keen on the Moore. Thanks anyway, AtomBomb. The location of the Ramada is really good too; it's about five blocks to Pike Place, five to Pacific Centre, and six or seven to the EMP and the Science Centre.

This is subject to my wife's approval, but would PA folk want to meet up for lunch or supper the weekend of the 27th to the 30th?

I want to ride the ducks now just to have Doc flip me off...
