[Game On] DotA. We're sitting here in Ventrilo playing some DotA.

edited December 2007 in Games and Technology
see the bottom section "The Nitty Gritty" for the who, when and where.

What is it?

Defense of the Ancients, usually shortened to just "DOTA," is a custom map made for Blizzard's Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. It involves two sides, the Scourge and the Sentinel, which send regularly spawning waves of creeps/mobs against each other. Players choose from 89 different heroes with unique abilities to do battle with each on this landscape. The goal of the game is to eventually destroy the opposing teams "Ancient" - a building located deep within their base.

What do I need?

First off, you'll need Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne installed and updated with valid CD Keys. After that you just need to go to http://www.getdota.com/ to download and install the latest map version. (Specific install instructions available on that site).

Halp I suck!

I decided to Game On this because I'm looking for some people to play regular games with and to give anyone new to DOTA a chance to learn it. DOTA is not newbie friendly for two reasons. One, there are a billion different customization options for all the heroes in terms of items and build strats. While it is hard to gimp your character, it is easy to make a build that will get brutally murdered by players that know how to build each hero and what they are doing. Two, the DOTA community is, itself, brutal toward newbies. You'll get bitched at in games for "OMG WHY DID YOU BUY THAT ITEM?" or "OMG STOP FEEDING WTF," etc. But don't let the community put you off - this game is fun, and there are a lot of good people to play with.

Either way, be sure to check out the official site at http://www.dota-allstars.com/ for FAQs, hints, tips and tricks. Seriously, you will thank me later.

    That's pretty awsome

Also, Shit, it's about damn time we had one of these, it's been ages. Loves me some Dota. I primarily play on Pvpgn servers (pvpgn.boredaussie.com specifically) though, so it's hard to connect to actual Bnet.

I'd just like to chuck my voice in with the "ignore dota players as a noob" crowd. You will certainly be heckled and sworn at and probably called a fag chink n*gger jew fucker or a slight variation of this. Dota players are pretty much the scum of the earth for some reason - I've never beeen able to work out why, it's probably got something to do with the fact that the game's so hard to get a handle on at the start that the community has a very elitest strain to it. Dosnt' really explain fully why everyone's so horrible though. :( It's a pity really, it's a great game but unless you're playing with friends you just have to expect your team to be full of jackasses.

I used to play this game all the time.

Now that I play WoW, I still play it, but usually only on WoW-maintenance night (also known as Night of the Damned).

If you think the loud whining about class imbalance in WoW is bad, when there's only nine classes, try listening to the whining about imbalance when there is 80+ different heroes, with hundreds of items and item combinations which they can all use. Its epic, let me tell you that.
Sometimes the complaints are genuine...anyone remember Sven the Rogueknight, back when his Stormbolt did 300 damage for 140 mana cost, and God's Strength was a +175% damage with a 40 second duration and a 1 minute cooldown?

My favourite past time used to be to challenge my friends to 1v2, or 1v5, or whatever the fuck they wanted, go Sven and pwn them all 5v1 in the game.

Like, literally. I'm in their base, all 5 try to kill me, I kill all 5. With no Black King Bar. God's Strength was just ridiculous, you would be in God Strength mode 2/3 of the time, if you blew the cooldown everytime it was up.

Not to mention having just as much HP as Centaur.

And, early game, being able to out-nuke most nukers, if you gave him enough Bracers. I mean, the item build was a no-brainer. Boots of Speed, 4x Bracer, finish Power Treads, get Mask of Death, Helm of Iron Will, finish Helm of the Dominator, get Satanic, then mass Hearts, replacing a Bracer with a heart each time. And of course, the skill build was Storm Bolt + Stats, taking God's Strength at level 10 and 11, then maxing Cleave, then Stats, Then getting devotion Aura at 21-25.

although, to be fair to IceFrog, the current iteration of DotA *seems* pretty well balanced. Which is a difficult thing to do when you're balancing 80 heroes.

Even better was the old summoner where summoned phoenixes had no timer. Just build an army of 7 or 8 phoenixes all doing 50+ chaos damage per second and singlehandedly take out any tower and the Ancient. Any game with the summoner was basically a countdown for the other team to try and win before the 40 minutes mark or face certain defeat.

    Haha.

Really though, I'm glad they took that guy out. He was just way too complicated to ever be able to balance properly.

A shame, since he must have been a nightmare to code and get working, much less working in a balanced way.

DOTA is balanced, in the sense that there is a counter to any and every powerful build. The trick is knowing all the counters. Except for Puck. Man, fuck Puck.

Your team's line-up of heroes largely determines how you will do in a single game. Meaning that you nearly always need a tank, a disabler, a dps'er, an assassin, and a support. The draft game modes, like -rd, usually result in superior games for that reason. It actually allots time for teams to pick out balanced teams, and get decent counters for enemy heroes.

-ap games nearly always suck, because you end up with 2 invisability dependent heroes on your side, and two fragile DPS'ers.

A quick google on GGClient makes me believe they're pretty much the same thing. It pretty much just cons the host's computer into running in Lan mode, which somehow improves pings. I don't know HOW it does it, or why it runs better, but it works.

With pick-up listchecker only the host needs it, not sure if it's the same for GGClient.

And I haven't played in a month, at least. I don't hate pubbies for the lack of skill, I hate pubbies because people are fucking twats that purposely ruin games. Of which DOTA is particularly susceptible to.
