Ive got an interesting problem that I think I might know the answer too but Id like to hear what other people have to say. I have a Dell E520 and 400SC (This was a known good computer with no problems).
The E520 was sitting on an APC 350 ES UPS that we had to move downstairs to a little used outlet. After updating a printer driver and restarting a BSOD happened with stop error 0x0000007B. I looked that up and it said that windows cant talk to the boot device your drive might be corrupt.
I thought it might be the power supply as thats the first thing to fail and not enough power was getting to the computer so I replaced it with a brand new one. Same problem. So, I thought it might be something to do with the wall power. To check I plugged the 400SC into the UPS and booted up.
I got memory errors and garbled text. So after that Im thinking it might be the UPS so I go plug the UPS back in upstairs and notice that the UPS has a light on that says building wiring fault. I know thats not true because just last week the UPS was plugged into the same place with no problems.
I think this proves it was the UPS and it fried something. So, I took the E520 and plugged it into the wall directly in the known good plug and tried to boot up with an XP install disk. Everything is detected in the BIOS but when I go to boot off the CD to reinstall windows I get the same stop error.
I thought it might have fried the hard drive so I replaced that with a known good hard drive that was nowhere near the computer, same problem. Then I thought it might be the SATA channels that got fried so I changed ports same problem. I dont have another SATA DVD drive to test that but I think the controller is totally shot.
Plus the 400SC wont even get past the garbled text now so thats even worse off. Any ideas? Im calling the insurance company tomorrow to file a claim but I want to make sure theyre both truly dead before I do that.
