The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I just assembled a new PC, and I had a very ominous feeling about the whole thing. Today I finally got to turn it on and.... nothing happened. Then, it lit up and all the fans started.....and shut itself off just a few seconds later. The power button and reset buttons didn't work. I toyed with the jumpers a bit, and got the power switch to work.
Now, the unit turns on... kind of. The fans all start (processor, case, psu). Neither the DVD nor the Hard drives start, there's no sound out of the board speaker, and the diagnostic LED lights on the motherboard sit at red. Unfortunately, my manual doesn't say what red means.
What's the problem? Is it a faulty powersupply, the motherboard, or could I have some of my jumper settings wrong still (could I even mess those up to the point where they'd create an issue like this)?
1) Does it have any memory installed? Boards these days won't run without it. (If yes, make sure it's seated properly)
2) Does your power supply have sufficient watts to power everything, try unplugging the non-essentials from power.
3) There shouldn't be any real jumpers to set, what jumpers did you change? Or by jumpers do you mean the connectors for the buttons and lights?
Button/light connectors. They seem to be almost random in this case.
I think the problem is a common board defect that other people on newegg have had. At first I figured it was my cheap-ass case and cheap-ass power supply that comes with said cheap-ass case.
Anyway, I've requested an RMA and while that's out, I'll probably get a new power supply as well to ease my fears.
No more cheap cases for me in the future. As for motherboards....hmmm...the PC I'm on now was pretty inexpensive and has lasted 4 or 5 years so far.
I don't really want this topic to be locked yet. I'd like to see if anyone knows what would cause a problem like this, and who has experience with newegg's return services.
sorry if i'm missing something... but i don't see what a cheap case has to do with anything? I used to have a gaming rig in a $300 case, and my work pc is in a $40 case... both run fine, as long as it's not bend and causing shorts or whatever... the case really has no bearing on how the machine works.
and about the problem... i've had this on almost every machine i've ever built, it's normally meant something isn't seated properly, take everything out, power cables etc... and plug each one back in carefully and firmly, make sure it's all nicely in there, it's solved it every time for me.
not saying it's not your mobo, just saying... try the obvious first.

Well, anyway, good luck when your new stuff gets in.
