Need Mac OS X sound help!!

I'm having real trouble with sound on my mac. I run windows on the same machine, whenever I run windows
there is no problem with sound whatsoever.
I can't get any sound through the inbuilt speakers or through the seperate speakers I normally use.
I'd wait until Monday and just call Applecare but I'm editing which needs to be finnished by tomorrow night.
I've changed settings on preferences etc etc and gone through the apple support website with no joy. I don't
know macs very well, any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
