So I've finished Portal and Ep 2, and considering giving TF:2 a shot this weekend. The only FPS I've ever played significantly online was Alien vs. Predator 2, so I'm a bit intimidated by the prospect. Is there one class which is more friendly for people not familiar with the game and maps, or should I just dive in and learn by screwing everything up royally?

Just jump in. TF2 is the most accessible online fps I've ever seen. You will be in there fragging those goddamn blues (or reds?) in no time at all.
I say with great pride that tonight for the first time... I was accused of hacking. It brought a tear to my eye. I guess they just couldnt fathom that rockets make you go boom! MAGGOTS! :x

Man, as a Medic, I always, ALWAYS, get killed by stray crit rockets. Someone runs in, gets shot a few times, dies... I wait a sec... and as soon as I move forward a rocket comes out of nowhere.
Bonesawing someone is the most awesome thing ever.
You can do sprays for TF2 right? I want to make one of Randy Savage as Bonesaw from the Spider-man movie. Like how they had the saws in the audience and were, well, sawing.

Makes me angry.
Part of the art of medic is dodging everything.
What makes me angry is when I'm healing a heavy or a Soldier and they can't kill the Scout that's running around shooting me with hurty.

You can't dodge a rocket if it explodes at your feet... especially them glowin' ones!
I've been knocked into the air while jumping and trapped there until dead. One time a medic was healing me, so there I am, strapped to the roof by this SG unloading on me while the medic healed me.
Only lasted a mere few seconds but I mean, it was totally fucked. I couldn't do anything at all.
Wow, now that the interface has been streamlined, playing Engineer is so awesome. It's like I have a mobile base with people popping up beside me thanks to teleporters for backup. I had one time where my lv 3 sentry was about to explode, then suddenly a soldier popped right in and blew up the heavy that was blazing at me.
It gets a little boring when you're on 2fort with everyone killing each other outside, though. But then there's always the challenge of trying to build a sentry in the water.
I think the Engineer makes a very safe class to start with; turtling is always straighforward enough, and in offensive maps you can always be sure of contributing something as long as you keep a portal up and a dispenser near the front. Once your machines are up, you can head into the fray and learn on the game's most widely used weapon: the shotgun.
But try 'em all, there's something for every style (and come join the PA steam group!)

If turrets didn't have the knockback they have, it would be impossible to defend a point with them. They die pretty easily. They're not really for damage, they're for lockdown.

Yeah, that shotgun took my heavy down in too few shoots. I was running up a ramp, he shot me once... twice... I turn around, shot me again, rev up my gun, shot me again, and I get maybe 10-20 bullets out, and he killed me.
The scout's scattergun can one-shot a soldier if he crits up close. That's too powerful, in my opinion. I played a clan scrim tonight and I was the soldier. The scouts wrecked me.

A scout should never kill a heavy. Never.
Thats how a scout should be played, though. From what you said, he got about four shots in before you started firing; I consider that a decent number of hits, myself. If you got hit by four of anything else you'd be in trouble too (rockets, nades, even regular shotgun hits). Iif you had been revved already he'd just be ground into little chunks and you wouldn't think much else. To me, that's just effective scouting.

Played as a medic for a bit tonight (I was ROU Xenophobe in game). Had a bit of fun, but this game has more crippling bugs than any I've encountered in years.
1: Couldn't connect to servers. Any server requests came up as 0.0.0.0 until I restarted steam twice, then this went away.
2: On joining I would have 10-15 seconds of smooth gameplay and then 10-15 of being frozen. Restarted the computer, disabled the firewall, and it changed to 5+ minutes between lag spikes.
3: "OS Paged pool memory low" with an inevitable crash after playing for some undetermined length of time.
4: After said lag spikes, team models would get alllll fucked up. Like the other team would start showing up as my team, all the classes would show up as scouts carrying the respective weapons, player names wouldn't show up, and so on and so forth.
I'd really like to play this but right now it feels like it needs several more months of beta.

So do level 3 turrets have more hit points than level 2? Because if they don't i'm not convinced that they're better than lvl 2. It seems like their rockets never hit people, in fact I don't think i've seen them hit once. They're really easy to dodge and as I recall they fire before the mini gun fires.
Also epic moment of today: Holding off the point B of Gravel advancement with a few of people. 3 medics, one heavy, one soldier try to come up, my excellent medic buddy (I was heavy) ubers at precisely the right time, forcing them all to run outside the building. Apparently they didn't expect me to follow them because they were all standing right outside there. Waxed the heavy first through criticals, then the soldier and 2 of the medics who ran like pussies.

Obviously, you have problems so everyone else does as well.
Ohh wait, how come nobody else is complaining about issues? Maybe... maybe its you?
Actually, while I agree that their function is similar to spies, I find myself killing alot of people from behind. The high speed rewards going behind the pack via a different route, then shottying as many as you can. When I first played the scout, I had no clue what to do with him at the front lines, but I've recently found they are best taking the long way and surprising the enemy. In function, they are very similar to spies, except turrets own scouts no question.

Doesn't matter, because they get sapped just as easily. I prefer to just upgrade to lv2 and save the metal in case I need to move up and build another sentry once we cap a point.

Scouts really piss me off because whenever some other scout comes at shoots me I die in one hit, but whenever I'm a scout that asshole heavy gets 6 shots in the back of the head and then turns around and shoots me. Ahhh, the magic of confirmation bias...
I am still enjoying the adventure of playing as the sniper, until some other tard on my team decides that he really needs to snipe from wherever I am.
Much better run tonight, hehe. Played on Bomb's server, Had some good times. Server started of with a low pop, around 4v4. On 2Fort, as Pyro I got several Axe kills, and managed to have 3 of the 4 on the other team dominated, hehe. Had a blast playing Medic in Hydro, love that Bonesaw, and actually had a few effective rounds as a Spy assaulting on Gravelpit.
Won some rounds, lost some rounds, overall had a great time. I LOVE this game!

We can be soldier friends. We can loathe the cheapness of the cowardly corner-hiding Demo's and the skill-less hacks that populate the Pyro class.
so in order to fill the place former despair and rage used to be
the pyro class exists

Quite possibly me. I don't know why, but my bullets seem to always find their way into RMD's face.

Soldiers rockets need to do a little less damage.
SG knockback needs to be toned down slightly.
If those things happened, I'd be pretty happy.

Pyro was confused when turned, RAN AT HIM unloading needles then bonesaw'd his face off.
Then died a few seconds later to the burning

I'm waiting for team heavy personally.
I reinstalled windows, ran a hardware check, repaired my hd fragments, and then opened up a ton of space.
Then I lowered res to 1280x720 with medium-low, with HDR and Motion Blur.
And this is with a Radeon X1600 mobile card..
Now I never get that, or the sound loops.
