Re: Multiplayer
Imagine, if you will, a capture the cake map. No extra guns, just portal devices. 6-8 players. 3 or so paths to each cake. No guns other than the Portal device.
Just add crazy heights, some of those shields that reset the portal devices, lots of water and squishy devices. Opening portals under cake carriers to flaming pits, or throwing the cake into a portal to be caught on the other side by your teammates. And did I mention cake? Puzzle based multiplayer could be done to, like Uru (I think that's what that myst thing was called). But with more velocity. It could be great.
I could actually see myself going insane after half an hour of that.
Well done, Android. The Enrichment Center wishes to remind you that Android Hell is a real place, and you will be sent there at the first sign of defiance.
To me, this is the moment when things got weird. Up until that line of dialogue, everything had been fairly normal, if a bit funny and off-kilter, but nothing too obviously odd or creepy going on. Then you hear that, and you can't help but think, "What the hell did she just say?"

I can NOT stop listening to the song. I was excited for Portal as a fun FPS puzzle game, and it turned out to be so much more. I want some more freaking games like this.

Well it said in the beginning of the stage that that particular level was supposed to be a testing ground for military androids so the comment, while hilarious, didn't seem that unpredictable.
Loved the game. A bit more enjoyable then Episode 2 in fact though they are both amazing.
Spoiler concerning ending of portal and episode 2.
I played through episode 2 first and when they mentioned the Borealis and how it was connected with Aperture Science I at first was thinking that would be the big reveal in portal that you get to the top level and you find your on a boat. Anyone else feel they hinted that way? Even after you leave the test areas in portal and it is all rusty and falling apart it seems a bit ship like. Maybe I'm just crazy but all the way up till they show you outside the facility for a brief second that was my assumption.
Might still be. Remember, the final boss involves a massive portal opening, much like a portal storm. You get tossed who knows where -- I can't remember if you saw signs of Aperture Science where you ended up.
So maybe you were on the Borealis. Either way, outside of the Borealis connection I think the aftereffects of Portal are more going to be felt in Half life 4 (Half life Eps 1-2 feel like Half life 3 to me, and the subtitle makes more sense). The AI, and a few other things you see, seem to fit in pretty conveniently to what Dr. Breen is trying to do.

Right, but she knew the level was being re-purposed (obviously; she did it), and anyway the dialogue still wouldn't make any sense. It ratcheted up the weird several notches at once.

Yeah, I caught it.
Also, as much fun as it would be to have GLaDOS as a random sig, I'm sure it would give away the game for others.
I wonder how our Xbox owning companions are going to fare on some of the puzzles without being able to whip around and re-orient your view as fast.
I was excited for this game mostly for the novelty, but holy shit, did it exceed my expectations. All the dialogue after 16 was absolutely hilarious, especially the boss fight, and then once I'd settled down from that the credits started, and I haven't been able to stop smiling since .

I think I really started to get odd feelings about this when I noticed that in every test room's "observation room", there were no people in sight. Not to mention, when has there been a robot lady AI in a video game that hasn't gone batcrap insane at some point? Another big hint was when she couldn't name my hometown, almost as if there was no one to give her the data?! dun dun dunnnn

Fodder that is vaguely spoilerish methinks. >.<
Eh, to me, the parts (even in the first area in the relaxation chamber or whatever) where she was interrupted by corrupted data/gibberish sent up red flags.

I had a creepy feeling from the cryogenic pod. It just kept growing and being confirmed...
Oh, and the Prison Orange. Never good.
I wonder if you were brought there for Take Your Daughter to Work day, or were an actual member of the team.

According to the site notes, yes, it was Take Your Daughter to Work day. (when using cjohnson/tier3 user/pass combo)
From the scene versus GladOS, she says "You're not even a full-time employee!" but she also asks "Where did you go wrong?" which suggests, you aren't so young that you're a daughter of one of the employee's

It's probable that glados was just trying to mess with you, but at the end one of her quotes is "only bad people get sent here you know" or something like that-- it's possible all the test subjects are inmates. Also the character model is way too old looking to be an employee's adolescent daughter.

Maybe on Take Your Daughter to Work Day her father or mother was killed, and then she was kept alive in that little facility for, like, a decade.
GlaDOS constantly glitches out when speaking. It immediately took the formality out of things and made me feel uneasy. Things really got creepy when exposed parts of the test rooms appeared, showing how decrepit the building is.
Did the AI kill off the Aperture staff and start running her own experiments? What people once thought was a Combine facility is a whole lot more murky.

She couldn't have killed everyone, as someone installed a module to keep her from gassing everyone again. My guess is they abandoned the facility during the Portal Storms or Combine Invasion.

It's a little murky about the state of the facility at the time of the actual game. There IS a module to stop her from gassing everyone again, but in the game commentary in the final room they talk about the little red phone which they imagined as having a clerk posted at all times to monitor glados--the line was cut, so something unsavory apparently happened again. That or It was from the first uprising and they never reposted the watchman or fixed the phone in all that time

I've figured all the following assumptions to be pretty plausible about why you are here and why GLaDOS says what she does:
1. The GL portion of GLaDOS was activated on Take Your Daughter To Work Day. From the same written history, it is reasonable to assume that's where things started to get horribly wrong. If we connect the dots a bit here, we can assume Chell is present in some form at TYDtWD.
2. By the developer commentary, the red phone in GLaDOS's room was intended as a failsafe incase GLaDOS became godlike and dangerous. The phone's receiver cord is cut, and there were implications that GLaDOS had managed to go out of control before the staff realized and attempted to phone for help.
3. GLaDOS implies multiple times throughout the course of the story that this is not the first time you've been tested. Most notably, she says "hello, again" at the very start of the story. She also states in the final encounter that complete backups of your personality exist and she will be glad to create a new Chell after your unfortunate death.
4. GLaDOS' statement that you are not a full time employee is probably correct. You've been locked up in the holding cell for an indeterminate amount of time, and I think it's quite possible that you are a recent backup of a previous chell that died during testing.
5. I've kind of lost my train of thought here, but basically I think that Chell was one of the daughters taken to work when GLaDOS was fully activated some time after 1996. My perception is that TDW day was sometime around the same time as Black Mesa, before the Portal Storms -- but I have no particular evidence leading me to that.
6. If Portal takes place after the Seven Hour War, then the subjugation of mankind could easily lead to the abandonment of Aperture Science's facility, while still allowing for GLaDOS's gassing of the test subjects and summary installation of a morality core by living computer engineers. GLaDOS then would continue in peace with her assigned scientific testing to develop the portal gun.
7. Chell is raised in a testing environment, and murdered/recreated many times in the name of science by GLaDOS. The "cakeisalie" video footage from the Aperture Science website shows that at one time there were employees at AS that were assigned to computer engineering projects at the facility that were not fully aware of Chell's existence, nor of GLaDOS's twisted experiments/personality deficiencies. As the nameless employee put it "I don't think going home is part of our job description anymore." We don't really know if anyone managed to escape Aperture alive, but I think that everyone except Chell was killed and the facility was lost to outside communication by the chaos caused by the Seven Hour War, or perhaps the Portal Storms in the years before the conquering of Earth.
8. Given all of the following, I think that Chell is the one who left all the messages in the lab for you in places like the Rat Den and most of the post-19 understructure. All of those markings were left from times when Chell was either driven to insanity or killed by the testing environment.

This is all kind of a mess. Sorry about that.
I like most of this, but I can't tell if you're saying Chell is a daughter of one of the employees, but aged x years so that the actual game can take place during the events of HL2/Ep1/Ep2/Ep3. In any case, the outside area after the explosion doesn't look like anywhere post-Combine invasion. (Note: I haven't played Ep1 or 2 yet)

Okay, now I'm going to bed.

Yeah I guess
Ahahahahahahahahaha
That was just an excuse to type that.
Consider: the veracity of the cake.
Using TYDtWD is a horrible travesty, though. Just spell it out, dammit.
