Whenever I do a Challenge, it says I cheated when I get to the elevator. More distressingly, it doesn't record my score (or portal number, whatever). Why would it say that?

After "assuming the position" I expected the door to open and spill out Combine or something, so I had a portal right in front of it with the exit in the fire.
Excellent game. I'd love to have more of the story campaign than the HL2 episodes. Portal felt fairly similar to 1213 or I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream's setting. Just oozed atmosphere!
Also, best ending credits song ever!

Sounds like you have commentary mode on (which makes you invincible). Go to the main menu and start a new game, and then you should be able to play the bonus maps with commentary off.

I did the exact same thing. I don't even know how I triggered the achievement though, I just waited around for awhile.

Got to the room with turrets, took one out, got to the room with the little button, and turned the fail way up. Totally stuck after that little red button...
Ok, I only played an hour or so of Halflife and never had a pc fast enough to even try Half-life 2. As a rule I pretty much dislike most FPS's (up until Bioshock and Halo 3, which I recently gave a chance to and really enjoyed).
With that background, I'd never even HEARD of this game but from what I read it sounds all sorts of awesome. Do I need any Halflife background knowledge at all to get in to this game or am I good to go? Incidentally I'd be getting it (or the Orange box) on the 360.

You'll be fine. At worst you'll miss a couple of ultimately insignificant references.

Goodo. Being I'll be buying the Orange Box I plan to play through everything in it anyway, now I'm over my stage of hating first person shooters.
does anyone have an mp3 of the background music? that was some of the most calming music. ever.
I'm trying to get the OP to edit the link into the first post. No dice so far, since you're the seventeen millionth person to ask. It's on both the second page here and the previous page. Hell, here is another link to the mp3.
It is now also in my signature.

I wonder how our Xbox owning companions are going to fare on some of the puzzles without being able to whip around and re-orient your view as fast.
Perfectly fine.
I've been playing on Xbox and was amazed at how quickly and accurately I've been able to fire this damn thing off.
This is my first "FPS" experience on the console. I was hoping it would be a useful training tool for me since I'm not used to using a controller. It seems to have worked well.
Does anyone know what happens on the website if you type in your code correctly when the application process completes?

Damn, I've seen the request for the end song so many times, my sleep-addled brain read what he said differently. My fuckup.

you can't
it's case sensitive, and you can only type in caps
and if that wasn't bad enough, pay attention to your number when they show it to you

You're gonna have to specify a level and/or location for us to be any help. There's music for different parts.
Two drastically different build-up music things come to mind:
Remember that time GladOS said 'goodbye' and we were all 'no way'?
And
The ambush which then led to the momentum fling

Is nobody going to comment on the fact that Episode 2's helicopters are run by GLaDOS AI's and in-fact speak like GLaDOS during the game?
AS are military contractors, after all.

An important aspect of mapmaking will be terminal velocity. It does not seem like the in-game terminal velocity is that fast, therefore you will only be able to fling yourself so far.
Trying to aim and shoot portals accurately while at terminal velocity is really fun.
And by really fun, I really mean 'really fucking irritating'.
The advanced puzzels require you to do it lots. It's not that they're even any harder to solve than the normal puzzles, they just make you do crazy shit like that.

OK, It's the music that plays when you learn about conservation of momentum (Level 10?). Also, the music after you get the orange portal is pretty awesome. (I think that's Level 11). I'll leave you techno-wizs to work your musical alchemy.
