So I don't know if anyone wants one, but here's the number of cameras you have to detach in each room for the achievement. I didn't list specific locations because I'm lazy and it would ruin the fun. :P

Totals to 30, even though I could've sworn the achievement said 33, but I still got it when I took out the last one in 19.
It is 33, you just counted wrong
I'll be damned if I know where those last 3-4 cameras are. I was pretty thorough on my third playthrough, and I found I think 29.
His list is right (I wrote down the same list while playing through), so just follow it. Make sure you get all the cameras at the beginning of TC 2, which are easy to forget about.
I think it's safe to assume that prior to Episode 2, nothing in the half life universe is connected to Portal. So assuming something in HL1, HL2, HL2: EP1 was done with a connection to portal is irrelevant for the sole reason that portal didn't exist as a valve property.
Now if they choose to tie it in retrospectively within the portal universe, that's different, but assuming that the combine energy balls etc are aperture items and vice-versa is a waste of time. They are a plot point, nothing more. You do the same thing in HL2 with powering doors/shields using energy balls.
Now, who wants to bet they tie in the portal gun in EP3?
I mean, it IS the APERTURE science ship and it did DISAPPEAR with parts of the DOCK! One can only assume some massive portal mistake...
Also, a point on Alyx:
I love how she just randomly fixes a goddamn helicopter in about 45 minutes.
I'd still bang her.

In regards to my math: I used some find/replace magix and made it into a long line of x+y+z (etc) and fed it into google, so it's not my math, it's google's, so what actually happened is I have faulty memory and thought it said 30 when it said 33 (yes, I checked again). I'm not sure if this is better or worse news for myself.
so... wait.. Transporting the gnome? you mean i have to take it from the almost *1st*area, and drag its porcelain ass all the way to the end of the game?

i was hoping someone would post this up, i played through a second time just to do this and missed 2 cameras still, booooo...now i can make sure i get them all tonight..gracias
Did everyone catch the hint that there would be another portal game in the dev commentary?
The first behind the scenes area has the dev talking about this area he calls the 'rats nest', and how Portal didn't show a lot of plot, but there was a LOT of backstory generated for aperture science. One of his comments is that 'we don't show a lot of that backstory in this FIRST portal game...'. He clearly emphasisis first. I don't recall the name of the dev who gave this sound clip though.
I was so thrilled to see the end of Episode 2
and the tie in to Aperture Science
.
Also, one thing I don't get in this thread is that everybody here is commenting about how Aperture Science isn't as good as Black Mesa, but everything in Portal and HL1 points to the opposite conclusion. There was almost no futuristic tech except the failed portal generator in HL1 black mesa. Everything was quite terrestial in order to clash with the alien tech. Portal however has the energy balls, the platforms that move on beams of light, the AI, the Portal Gun, the moving test chambers themselves, the missile launchers, the force fields all over the place that selectively let objects through, all of this is more advanced than anything seen in black mesa. Then the object discovered at the end of Episode 2 as well.
The charts in the slides showed that Aperture submitted WAY more applications to the government, but it isn't like Black Mesa was way in the lead for approvals. It looks like they got one approval and Aperture got none. All those applications Aperture made could have been after the government put all their money into Black Mesa.
All black mesa did was design that plasma gun you get at the end, and work on portal tech that failed thanks to
G-Man's crystal and Breen
.
Wow, talking about reading way too much into a game.
It looked to me that Aperture was the type of company to toss in loads of features for everything they did but not properly test and work out all the bugs for (GLaDOS supposed to be a de-icer...but ends up sentient?) whereas Black Mesa focuses on refining/working out the kinks on a very specifically designed item rather than loading it up with features.
Also, that charge about contracts made it look like Aperture would also request a shitload more money per project (or just more projects) than Black Mesa.

They have stated outright that Portal 2 will eventually exist; we don't need to search for hints.
The quote I read, I believe, stated that right now they are deciding whether to work on making more maps to expand Portal 1, working on some kind of multiplayer, or delving straight into Portal 2.
Is portal taking place during the combine invasion?
I'm guessing it takes place around the same time as HL1 maybe towards the end of it. I don't think the combine would let
a supercomputer sit around unattended, or have high tech unaccounted for.
Yeah, but there are several lines in the game suggesting it. It sounds as if Glados has been keeping the facility a secret, or somehow else protected it from something. Sure, the lines can be attributed to other things, but still, it's interesting.
"Unless you have a plan for building some supercomputer parts in a big hurry, this place isn't going to be safe much longer."
"What's your point, anyway? Survival? Well then, the last thing you want to do is hurt me."
"I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside."
"All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was."
"Are you trying to escape? [chuckle] Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here."
a lot of those quotes, i took in the same way as
assume the party position, so we can go and have a party with cake, because i wasn't trying to kill you, oh no. I honestly don't know how things are meant to be outside of the centre, but i also wouldn't take everything GLaDOS says as literal, when she was trying to coax you into stopping your escape attempts

I'd say they should spend a bit of time to make it easier to mod portal (which would end up enabling both multi and new maps) and then working on the sequel.
The sequel would basically just be the GlaDOS cabaret show.

There was some stuff in there that was real funny to me, but I don't know how intentional it was, and even if it was, I doubt it was very accessible to the general public.
My father is a former DCAA (Defense department Contract Audit Agency) auditor, and I've worked on the other side, writing up Financial policies for an aerospace firm so as to comply with the DCAM (DCAA Contract Audit Manual, yes, one of that letters in that acronym stands for another acronym. we are talking about documents writing by accountants here, which are arguablyeven worse than stuff written by lawyers.)
As such, I've actual read through parts of the DCAM, the FAR, the DFARS, and other acronymized government accounting and contracting regulations, and even done a bit of work directly with DCAA auditors, and I can see many of the blatant issues with Aperture's proposals (not like bad issues that make it unrealistic, but like issues within the game world, which would make their proposals even more hilariously unappealing to the government than they even appear on face value.)
I am wondering if this stuff just kind of came about, or if any of the writers had any familiarity with the DCAM, et al.
I need to go back to the area with the power point and take screenshots for my father.
Please, then, Kazhiim, enlighten poor unlikable me, and show me how the context of the word's usage has defined exactly what an Android is in the Half Life Universe. ;-)
I'll do you one better. I'll give you the context for the entire joke!
This is a game with a dark, dark humor. Written by the same videogame nerds over at Old Man Murray. If you haven't read some of the stuff there, go do it.
The "android" level entrance text is supposed to give you the idea that the next puzzle is dangerous- a complete contradiction to what was said a level or two earlier about "The enrichment facility always providing you with a safe testing environment." The idea is to reinforce the idea that aperture laboratories, though sterile, is hardly organized and orderly. You know, hinting at some discord behind the scenes.
The "android" level exit text is supposed to be a very geeky joke.
I would like to quote this to emphasize Old Man Murray. Erik Wolpaw is awesome and hilarious. He wrote for Psychonauts too - another awesomely written, hilarious game. Good writers are the part of the video game formula that most developers completely ignore and wind up with technically impressive games that are boring as hell... meanwhile, good writing can turn a pretty cool gimmick game like Portal into an epic masterpiece...
So Chell picks up Ye Olde Portal Gun on the mantle and starts trekking down to the ruins of Aperture Science to finish the job...
Edit: By the way, I need a huge favor. I have no access to photoshop right now, I'd really appreciate it if somebody could do a quick little shop to my Wish You Were Here avatar replacing the head of the guy on fire with an appropriately sized Companion Cube. I will give you cake.
It's been mentioned, but bears reiterating every few pages:
The ending song was written by Jonathan Coulton. If you like it, go here and there's much more of the good stuff :-)
I love playing his cover of "Baby Got Back" at parties and watching the look of confusion change to recognition, and then amusement on the faces of fellow party-goers.
oh, I don't know if it was covered, but apparently her full name IS Chell Johnson. She is, I believe, the daughter (granddaughter?) of Cave Johnson, who was the founder of Aperture, back when it was just a shower curtain company, and who later went crazy, and decreed that Aperture should work on his 3 tier system. Portal technology was tier three, the other two being, (in reverse order,) The Take-A-Wish Foundation, and the Heimlich Counter-Manuever.
All of this info comes from the Aperture Sciences website.

as great as the heilich counter-manuever is, I think the TAWF is my favorite.
I dont' remember exactly how the Portal Storms worked, but is it possible that during the storms GlaDOS got a few glimpses of Combine / Portal tech and made an effort to duplicate them?
