Apple Airport Routers

So, wireless networking question. At my old apartment, our main router was an Apple Airport Express (one of the little ones, no bigger than a power adapter). I used another airport in my bedroom, an Apple Airport Extreme, to extend the range of my wireless network and to use as an access point for my PC.

We just moved to a new house and my roommate is using some generic "PC" router as our main router. I would like to use the Airport Extreme as an access point in my bedroom, but it appears that the Airport Extreme will only extend the range of Apple wireless networks, not all wireless networks.

Any Mac-type people know a way around this issue?
