Predictably, a few of the more hardcore players on the server bitched about how it was flagrantly inaccurate, and how could that guy gank Alliance players, and why was there a human hunter, but there's really no helping some people.

Most of the people missed the point then. They were so accurate on so many things (not perfectly, but far moreso than I expected) that the blatant changes (summoning 'scorpions', levelling to max by killing millions of boars, a human hunter) had to be done intentionally either because they felt like it, or as nods to the players who'd spot those things.

Hell, I laughed. "Why is that funny." "It's a human hunter." "...." "Humans can't be ... never mind."

If you look at commercials for other things, old people power chairs, commemorative football gear, porn videos, regardless of what it is, it looks like they sure as hell understand the audience that will buy their product.
It seems in a lot of ways that advertising agencies that are attempting to bring in the "gamer dollar" are trying to figure out exactly what it is that gets us to buy a game, and trying to turn that into what will get us to buy a soda or a car.
The unfortunate aspect of this is that "educated" gamers are buying games based off of product reviews from reputable sources, be it friends or a proven trusted website. So in all reality advertising isn't going to work as well on people like us. We're not going to buy something because it features their product in scenery we recognize. We're going to want to try it out ourselves or have our source tell us it does what it does better than anything else.
Now this especially matters when it comes to cars, I didn't buy a Mini because of the fucking Italian Job, I hadn't even seen the movie when I got mine, I did because I had driven a number of them and had decided that it was the car that I wanted to get. No amount of Minis in WoW based adverts like this one would've gotten me to buy one, in fact, had I seen something like this for a Mini, it might have stopped me from getting one, because the last thing I was is everyone I know saying "Did you just get that because you play WoW and there's a commercial for it?"

TLDR: We're not elitist we just don't want to come off like retards.

"Educated gamers"? "Not elitist"? I'm not sure those two sentiments really work together.

SOME people use product reviews, etc, but that is not a 'gamer' thing. Look at the disdain this board has for the sports franchises like Madden. Just because you see yourself as above the rest of the population because adverts don't work on you doesn't mean that is something that is gamer dependent. Besides, advertising doesn't really work the way you're saying. Advertising is about association and exposure. I don't know of ANY vehicle commercial that made me want to buy a specific vehicle. However, because of that WoW one and the meteor one, when I think trucks, the Tacoma is part of the list. That's what they wanted - to make you remember their brand.

When I said product reviews I didn't mean it had to be from a magazine or news source.
When your friend Steve tells you that Game X5: Return of Game X4 is awesome/retarded/goty then he's reviewing that product, and he is a reputable source to you (well if you listen to what he says anyways)

An Educated gamer is someone who buys a game like Psychonauts because it's critically acclaimed instead of buying the one with the prettiest cover; or asks around before he buys a sequel because games aren't inherently good just because the last one was. Giving yourself more information about the situation doesn't make you elitist it just means you know a little more, hence education.

And I thought the point of advertising was to get you excited about the product? Granted I don't understand viral marketing so maybe this is another extension of modern capitalism that I just don't understand.

The point of advertising is exposure. Why are some of the best ads not really about the product being advertised? Because it's about making you remember the brand. That way, when you think "I could really go for X", the first thing you think of is Y's brand of X because you saw a cool/funny/weird commercial (I loved the cadbury commercial with the gorilla playing drums).

I said you were being elitist in the 'educated gamers' thing because you were saying that by virtue of you educating yourself about the product, you were separate from the non-educated that the commercial you claim is targeting. I think the commercial worked exactly on you like Toyota meant it to. You're not talking about the Tacoma, but you ARE talking about the commercial. Which means anyone you mention it to is gonna look it up and then they're gonna think about the commercial. And by virtue of thinking about the commercial, you think about the Tacoma.

It doesn't matter that you specifically may negatively associate the Tacoma with that commercial now. What matters is that you're assisting Toyota in their getting the truck name out there because of how the commercial affected you.

I'm suddenly reminded of a question I asked myself earlier today, do the people that buy game fuel feel dirty when they buy it? Or is it just like getting regular Mt. Dew?

It's already pretty much the official drink of Lan Partys and tabletop gamming anyways.

I think I'm going against the grain here, but I didn't think that the dialogue was that bad.

I *cringed* when I heard the voice of what could only be a football jock saying "ok I'm equipping my epic axe and explosive arrows", but the rest was pretty funny, and the cringing was only out of sympathy for the poor actor who had to subject himself to saying something like that.

    O_o

What does a football jock's voice sound like?

I have no idea but thats the first thought I had.

    Maybe its the American accent.

Meh, I didn't think it was particularly bad so far as car ads go

But that Japanese ad that's Chinese - "No means No"?? - Its selling coke and trying to educate gamer demographic men how to treat women?
