so after having to get in the queue a SECOND time last night at midnight after my first download crashed at around 1 gig mark... I checked it again before i went to work at 1pm today, and found that I was STILL in the damn queue after 12 fucking hours.
It apparently started sometime during my time at work though, so now, 24 hours or so after getting in the queue I am at a hefty 13% downloaded.
Holy god... I hate fileplanet.
I seriously hope to god they have a better format for the early launch downloads, because at this rate it wont be worth the $5 if it will take til the day the game comes out to download the fucking thing.
You're using the public fileplanet servers aren't you? A fileplanet subscription is really worth it. I've had one for 2 years now and it has totally paid for itself each year.
On the subscriber servers I can reach 1000k/s and rarely go below 600k/s
Yea I finally got to the end of the que (after going to bed at 2am and waking up at 8am). By 9am I was reaching max speeds of 100kb/sec, giving an estimated download time of 32 hours. Thats 32 hours I have to have my computer on and not drop internet
I'll just wait for the early access and hope for other mirrors (other mirrors I can hopefully use a download manager on at least). I would have signed up for fileplanet, but if its 4 days before its active there would be no point (I only usually have to resort to fileplanet once every 4-5 months or so).
Unfortunately the game runs like shit on my computer. I can run Crysis on High but AoC bullies my computer into submission. Every time you load an area or even just randomly turn around you get an FPS drop, and it puts a damper on the whole experience. My only PvP experience came from some douche who warped circles around me, so I couldn't hit him at all. So that wasn't very fun either.
Overall I was not wowed at all, but I might try it out on launch anyway.
Welcome to the world of betas. This isn't a demo. If you are not reporting bugs every two seconds (and there are plenty to report) then there is no reason to play.

I think BETA is lost on a lot of people. I know my friend calls it Free Play. It's not, it's buggy as crap helping the developer find bugs play. It's never smooth and people bitch, but that's why they call it Beta and not early free play release for everybody!
I'm pretty sure if Funcom had total control, the game would not be released in two weeks. And yes, an open beta with less then two weeks left to release might aswell be called a demo.
We hope you are merrily chopping off Pict heads in the Age of Conan Open Beta, and that your journey in Hyboria has been a memorable one so far. You have only seen the beginning though, as we prepare an EPIC ending to your Open Beta experience.
On the 10th of May we are transforming the entire Open Beta into PvP MAYHEM, while at the same time giving you access to all which Hyboria as to offer! That is right, as we take down our servers for a short period we are at the same time changing the entire server rule-set to Free For All PvP carnage! Your servers will ALL become PvP! Participate if you dare, or make a new character and stay in the safety of Tortage!
Details:
All servers become PvP servers. You can kill each other – no level restrictions on killing or getting killed, but you cannot PvP in the major cities.
All level 13 characters becomes level 20. Their inventory is wiped, but they have “tons” of money and really nice equipment suitable for level 20’s. Shopping bonanza!
You have access to ALL zones and ALL levels after level 20!
You will be zoned to your Race’s Hub (Cimmerians – Conarch Village, Aquilonians – Old Tarantia and Stygians – Khemi)
This means bye bye Tortage! Welcome Hyboria at large, and what a blast you will have. It all starts at level 20, and then it’s up to you, but you can be sure your fellow players will do their best to stop you!
We will get back with detailed information on the exact time it starts on the official Open Beta forums at IGN, as well as on the Age of Conan forums and community site.
You may ask, why skip levels 14-20? The reason is simple – the story. We take it seriously, and we would like for you to experience it at launch.
We urge you to join us for some epic PvP mayhem on the 10th of May, and we hope you will leave Hyboria with a bloodied smile on your face.
Heads will roll!
Sincerely
The Age of Conan development team
While I'm disappointed in the ganking that will be sure to follow, I'm pretty pumped about this. Like the majority of you, I have a significant PC yet my performance in the beta has been pretty bad, too. However, the prospect of getting out into the world excites me, as open areas are sure to bring the enjoyment up significantly.
I am, even though I'm rather disappointed with certain aspects of the game. But I really like the gameplay, so if they get their shit fixed up, it'll probably be a worthwhile purchase.

My friend and I enjoy it a great deal, despite the current issues. I'm still hopeful they'll have the optimizations taken care of on the 20th, if not the 17th (when the early play starts). So that's a "yes" for me.

I work at a software company, and though we don't make games, I can tell you this about the dev cycle:
Four days before release of the product or of a service release, we will have a build that works mostly well with a few slow areas and funny bugs where things fail to compile. We log them and send them to the dev team. What we get back the next day is something with a few funny text errors of graphical glitches, but all the functions work pretty well. We log these bugs with the devs as well.
The next day, (D - 1 until release) we get back an unusable product. Something that fails to launch, or everything under the Analysis menu is broken, or the Peak Analysys module will do everything perfectly right up until the point where it analyzes the peaks and then it crashes. Then we get, two hours later, a build with the same numeral designation with a "b" at the end of it. This one will work a bit better. Then the China team works overnight on it and we have a product that's pretty much ready to go on launch day.
My point is that a LOT can change in 13 days. Do not be surprised if a new Beta is rolled out and it ends up being worse. If you are in the beta, just log every error you see. The devs need you to. Hopefully we will end up with something that is playable on launch date.

I know I have been. Also, Funcom also sent out a survey yesterday about general beta experiences so far. I have no doubts they are taking our feedback seriously.
Also, am I in the closed beta? I won a competition to enter the beta, but I'm not sure if it's open or closed. It does say "closedbeta server 1" etc though.

... That would lead me to believe you are in the closed beta. JUST GUESSING! :P
Zzulu I'm just curious and forgive me if you've been asked this before, but is that Sean Penn in your avatar?
Also, on the topic of who's actually going to buy the game, count me in. I'm in open beta and my experience has actually been pretty positive. Yeah it's often slow and I wonder why the performance isn't better. (I have a nice machine) But then I remember the early days of Anarchy Online and other fun upstarts like Shadowbane and WWII Online. It really could be worse.
I'll be buying the game probable. Not at launch, but after a few weeks of gauging the response and seeing if it has improved. I will be sad not to get the preorder drinking cape, but i don't want to buy yet another MMO that i hardly touch (looking at you lotro ... and tabula rasa).
Got it pre ordered, won't be playing at launch. I suddenly got one of those time consuming dailies pop up, you know one of those female thinggee's. So far she hasn't expired.
I'm on the fence now. I pre-ordered, so at least I have the mammoth code. Haven't been able to play in the beta at all, and it looks like my 3-day headstart pre-order thing won't work due to family commitments. I'm leaning away from buying it, especially given that I already have WOW and COH and LOTRO accounts that I could reactivate and not have to pay an extra $50.
Plus I still have a shitton of DS games to finish, and Civ 4, and so forth.

Don't get so excited. The same survey (well similar) was given to the closed beta testers long, long ago.
It did not, however, have the question about "Are you going to buy this game at launch?"
I bought early access, will download the client once they open that up and then go grind my ass to level 20 on release day and only then will I stop to enjoy the larger aspects of the game.
I'm still undecided on my class though, one one hand Necromancer! On the other hand, I really like melee combat but I fear the barbarian is gonna be overplayed.

I'm still worried. I pre-ordered from GameStop (in-store, not online), and still haven't gotten a pre-order card with the mammoth/early access stuff. They had no idead what I was talking about when we pre-ordered over a month ago, and still don't. Anyone else have this problem? Should I go back up there? Man, I hate GameStop, but I want the mammoth. Same thing happened when LOTRO came out, and I had to cancel and go to Best Buy, where I was handed a box right there. Maybe I have to do that again.
I pre-ordered after playing the beta for a few days. Unfortunately I think my monitor is about to die on me. The first time I turn it on in the morning it only comes on for a split second then turns off again. I have to cycle the power like 20 times before it stays on. This morning it actually turned off after 2 or 3 minutes of use. The good thing is I'm pretty sure it's covered under warranty, the bad news is I will be without a monitor for a while so I don't know how much I'll be able to play at launch.
Edit: Huzzah! Warranty is good and a new shiny monitor is on its way from Samsung and I get to keep using this one until it gets here.

I was surprised too, they actually have a 3 year warranty that covers most things outside of you breaking it. All they asked was what problem I was having, I explained it, they asked if I had tried different cables, I told them yes, and they are sending a new one now. Hooray for customer support.

It felt like I had a 6 year old computer and I was trying to play Crysis, and the stuttering and FPS drops didn't make any sense. It's also kind of diffuse to send in a bug report saying that their optimization in the game is horrible. My other complaints was that the game, in its mechanics and world, felt very bland. Heh, fair enough. I should've added some IMHO's and stuff to cover my ass there. :P
