If you're on a mac you go into the command thing so that all hidden files are shown, plug in the ipod, and voila! you can now copy all the songs off. However, they are named by random letters so you'll need to import them back into itunes (or whatever) to get the details of the tracks correct.

Don't know how it works for windows, but when I needed to do this I just Googled it and loads of helpful sites came up.

iDump will also rip from your ipod, in case the above doesn't work.

    Google iDump.

Yamipod. I think I've had to import from my ipod about three times for various reasons due to back ups failing. It's nice to know it works.

I have ipodrip, and the problem is that it renames all of the songs as numbers. Artist and album titles will be fine, but songs will be 1234.mp3, 1235.mp3, etc. The ID3 tags are unchanged so if you play them in itunes the song title will come up, but if you want to go through your backups for a specific song it can be a pain in the ass to find it.

If you're on windows you can just show hidden folders and go straight onto the iPod and copy songs. However, iPod have a crazy habit of renaming the files so if its just one song you're looking for instead of ALL the songs just Search from your main menu and click More Options, Search Hidden Files. Then just look for one word in the song title or band name.
That's how I do it anyway. Save downloading stuff.

Sorry to resurrect the thread, but I just got a Macbook and I want to move my songs/videos from my ipod to it. I've looked at all of the programs listed so far in the thread and they either work only for pcs or they haven't worked at all. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

ephPod isn't easy to use, but it's the first program to come out, and it's very stable.
