Christmas present for BASE jumping MD/PHd student boyfriend

Ohhhkay, so it's early, but I'm spending some time trying to figure out my Christmas gift list so I can avoid procrastinating like I usually do. I was just poking around looking at some BASE sites for a gift for my boyfriend but I'm totally clueless as to what to get.

He likes to skydive and BASE jump - originally I was thinking of getting him some sort of camera system, but for one I can't really find a good place to order from, and two, it looks like it will cost a lot more than I thought it would.

Soooo on the offchance that anyone here knows about this kind of thing, where do I look?

Otherwise, any good ideas for gifts for a BASE jumper/skydiver/med student who doesn't really like TV, runs triathalons, likes to cook, and probably doesn't want an iPod?

Get him a really nice cooking knife or a high quality skillet.

I know I personally would love these (well I now have both).

But look at some high quality build kitchen products.

has he ever done that indoor skydiving wind tunnel thing? A session of that where i live is only like $80, might be a fun thing to do together?

This is awesome. All the benifits of seasoned cast iron, none of the drawbacks. Last pan you'll ever buy. But it's heavy so if he's like 5'1 and 85lbs, you might look elsewhere.

You're not gonna be able to afford any skydiving gear, and more importantly, it's too personal to get for someone else. You don't wanna buy him a smaller canopy than he's used to and then he turns to low on it and dies, or you buy a container that's no good for high speed freeflying and it comes open during freefall and hits the guy above him and kills them both! Mmmm happy thoughts

Accessories though, that's always fun. Get him a fancy cool looking altimeter, cool goggles, a new helmet(see if he likes full face or open first!)or a new jumpsuit. You can use your common sense judgement for those things without risking his life :) and they're not cheap gifts

Dropzones also often sell jumps in blocks at a slightly reduced rate per jump, so maybe see how much 100 jumps is or so.

If you don't mind encouraging the BASE jumping(I'm all for the skydiving myself obviously)find a cool place he hasn't jumped and buy him a ticket

Well he sounds outdoorsy, so why not go to the discovery store at the inner harbor and see if theres something there he might like.

What's your budget? Iwantoneofthose.com have cameras that you can fit to your helmet and crap for a hundred quid (approx $200)

    Best Idea Ever!

Get him those kiddy oven cooker (EZ Bake Oven?) things ($40 or so) and inside; jump tickets! Also the craziest cookbook you can find, making weirdly shaped tarts and such and such. :D

Get him a nice altimeter watch. If you're already thinking iPod, this probably won't be too much sticker-shock.

My hats off to you for actually doing research to as to what you bf actually likes. My wife knows I like video games, thats all. Every time I have a birthday I cringe because I open up my present expecting "Over the Hedge the Game" or something. Although she did buy me "Escape from New York" this past birthday which is a really awesome movie.

Thanks guys, all great suggestions. And no, I would never buy him any serious jumping gear, obviously he knows more about that than I do. The accessories suggestions are great though, and the cooking stuff. :)

Bumping this to see if anyone has any more suggestions. I mentioned watches the other night and he said he hasn't worn one for a while and probably wouldn't wear one - he just uses his phone for that. I may still spring for the altimeter (he'll be trying to climb Mt. Hood again this spring) but does anyone else have good ideas?

I decided against the cooking stuff for now as he lives with about 20 other med students in a coop style house so his cooking ware would get used and abused by all. :P

A knife would get tore up, but the pan I linked could take it. You can clean it with a wire brush or the self-clean cycle in your oven and it would work fine over an open flame campfire.

    Otherwise:
a good cook book (On Food and Cooking, anything by alton brown)

all men like pocketknives / multi-tools but you'd probably want his input on the specifics.

old fashioned doubled sided razors and quality shaving stuff is usual a slam dunk.
