Coming October 23, for $20, is King of Fighters XI.
THE STORY!
Orochi, a member of a mysterious group, stole the Goenitz seal. Taking advantage of all the confusion caused by it, Ash stole the Yata Mirror (the source from the planets), and that’s how, in between everything, he pulled the curtains down on the last King of Fighters. Time passes and everything seems to be okay in the world. However, and quite predictably, there will be a KOF Tournament. In the advent of the new tournament, new faces are handed invitations, while old faces, such as Eiji Kisaragi, return to the ring. Among the new KoF participants are Oswald, Duck King (a South Town veteran fighter himself), Momoko, and Elisabeth. All these fighters will find themselves in a tournament full of mysteries and secrets started by motives that they’d ignored. Behind this healthy competitive tournament hides a hidden force called "People from the Past" that has a lot of mixed objectives.

The OST rocks, also.
So how does this fall into the KOF timeline, which makes no sense to me? Are the 2006/Maximum Impact games mixed up in the madness, or are they separate?
Also, no Rugal makes me sad.
Still, looks damn good and pretty.
Also is it 20$? Amazon has it listed for only 15$, which is how much the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury anthologies on PS2 were, I believe.
Imports are so expensive...
There are three timelines. The first is the Orochi saga, which is '95, '96 and '97. '94 doesn't directly fit into this storyline, even though Rugal is in it, and it's the first introduction to the characters. The second storyline revolves around NESTS, and goes from '99 to 2001. '98 and 2002 are dream matches, hence completely devoid of story. A new storyline started in 2003, which is sort of a retread of the Orochi storyline in many aspects. KoF XI is essentially 2004.
The Maximum Impact games are separate from the main storyline; I'm not actually sure they're even part of the same canon, but that's probably debatable. They don't interconnect beyond a character level, anyway. But someone had the bright idea of calling Maximum Impact 2 King of Fighters 2006 in US territories, which just makes it more confusing. It makes more sense if you completely ignore that title, since it's just called MI 2 in Europe/Japan.
The proper series is going to be numbered by roman numerals. The next game is going to be King of Fighters XII, while Maximum Impact is undergoing endless revisions at the moment. I think the newest one is Regulation B or something.
I got that price from Gamestop.com.
I paid $20 for FF Anthology at a Gamestop brick and mortar, too.
Edit:
Fair warning, the last boss in XI is complete bullshit, pure SNK style bullshit
Apperantly it's not going to be out till 2009?
And it's going to be 3D cel shaded to look 2D?
And on the PS3 and 360?
O_o
This shit better be crazy good.
XII is going to involve new sprites for everyone, so it'll be a while before it comes out.
Finally, Iori, finally you will have a new sprite.
Vanessa being back fills me with glee, though.
Hell yes, I love me some duck king
Awesome just awesome!!!! I hope they leave in the network play.
I don't see them starting now sadly.
Guess I'll wait for the next one.
Gamestop pisses me off.
They do this with just about every 1st party Nintendo DS game as well. "We charge $5 extra, because you assholes probably won't remember that Nintendo usually charges $30 for their games!"
2006 is a great game, though.

I thought it was average. I liked Maximum Impact a lot more.
oh yea by the way guys. there's a story BEHIND every kof game. the reason why joe higashi isn't in, is because andy bogard disappeared after being defeated and thought he wasn't even close to terry anymore, so he went off to an undisclosed location to train (that only terry and joe know) that's why both andy and joe are away. mai sent joe to go look for him
first day buy, no question.

Goro, Leona and classic Terry (?) will be back in XII apparently. One of the only things we know about the game.
Still no Joe, though
Yeah, I think I'm getting this one.
I had heard that K9999(who I don't care about at all) was dropped because he was a lawsuit waiting to happen(similarity in appearance to Tetsuo from Akira or something), and that meant that Angel was dropped as a result of that. Also I think you are a year off. 2k1 has Angel as a playable character. 2k2 is a dream match game(it has Rugal as the final boss, along with Vice and Mature as playables) and has Angel as well.
Also, Eolith doesn't own K9999. SNK just doesn't like him because he's a bit too obviously based on Tetsuo, apparently.
From my short experience with both, however, I would say KOFXI is a better game. With a few exceptions, neither have many characters that are crazy on a Guilty Gear level, though the characters are certainly distinguishable.
Also, the Japanese PS2 version of NeoGeo Battle Coliseum has absurd load times which may or may not be fixed for the U.S. release. Just a heads up.

I really wish May Lee would come back. She's my second best after Kim.
