I've decided to carve out the entire side of this small lake and turn the walls into ramps. I'm hoping that when rain falls, it'll collect and go into the lake.
Also, I'm not sure if dwarves can go up their ramps or not. So that's a problem as my dwarves are down inside, happily carving ramps. I may have to build stairs to get out.
So, for whatever reason, I can see the entire interior to this volcano (despite my dorfs being at the edge of a pond some ways away from the mouth). There's an extensive network of tunnels filled with iron men, swallowmen, and some other lovable creatures. A few levels below that, the vast magma chamber is situated, with lava imps dancing around in their infernal pool with no way to get out.
the lava actually fills up to the surface of the ground, I just (for whatever reason) could use my x-ray vision to penetrate the depths of the magma and see the horrors that lurked beneath
the horrors that proceeded to swim to the surface and torch my dorfs before the finished unloading the cart
Wondroussweat, the Insightful Malign Nose. In "mirthful" surroundings, apparently.

Okay, so I downloaded and ran this thing. It spent about 20 minutes doing what I can only guess was building a world and then aging it a thousand years.

...Now what?
Might help to start a game before you get confused.

It looks like my earlier problem was some kind of pathfinding error, everything is working fine in my new fortress set amongst some lovely rolling hills.
Also, you seem to now get loads of starting points although sadly you don't get extra wagons any more.

so the only tiny lake on my map has spontaneously dried up. And I haven't been able to irrigate a farm room yet, and I'm on solid granite. Is there no way at all for water to replenish? Collecting from rain or anything?
'cause I haven't got the livestock to survive on meat for long, here.

I think you might be able to use rain to water crops on the surface. Could be wrong though. You need some handy ice traders to come and trade with you*.
*Ice Traders may not exist.

So I wonder why my dwarves are suddenly being interrupted by the wildlife when they haven't been so far, turns out one of the departing caravans was attacked and spilt it's goods and they were trying to collect them. Including some encrusted steel bolts that are worth 50,000

I've been selecting maps with varied elevations, and I seem to never have a short of lakes no matter what sort of location I'm in -- and this is with shrinking the local map before I start, because ouch my computer.
and seriously this version is so badass it is mind-blowing oh my gorf

I've tried playing a new game a couple of times, but the game keeps freezing shortly after saying "importing world..." Is it possible for a world it generates to be buggy from the get go?

I've actually got a small patch of arable land on the surface, where I've built a farm plot. Unfortunately, I've only got plump helmet spawn, which only grows underground. And there aren't any plants around to gather because I'm basically on the side of a giant granite cliff.

I'm trying to build a stone door, but I keep getting interrupted by a "Needs more non-economic rock" message. As I'm built inside of a damn mountain, I'm a little confused by this.
Can anyone help me out?

Press z and look at which types of rock you have flagged as economic.

But it's intuitive? And doesn't overly complicate the game?
Seems okay so far, it's no less intuitive than any previous version.
I'm actually surprised how easy it is to work with the z-axis so far. The only tricky thing is stairs, but once you figure that out, the entire subterranean world is your oyster. I just finished building a stairwell to the top of the cliffs by fort started near, there's some good soil up there for some reason.
Nooooo you can't place doors in empty spaces next to locked doors anymore
I thought I remembered hearing that you were going to be able to replace stone that you had already mined out in an upcoming version, though. This one maybe? Or one that already released?

You can "rewall" now in various ways, which means exactly that. You can use various materials though, not just stone -- it works just the same as building anything else, not like the dig command. It recognizes spaces enclosed partially or totally by built walls as inside, as well, so they function like typical underground rooms (with the caveat if you built above-ground, they remain flagged "above-ground").
I had no problem intuiting all of the new features I've used -- there are just so many mind-boggling applications opened up by enabling rewall and the z-axis alone that my imagination is racing ahead faster than my dwarves.
So apparently it IS technically possible to build a pump system to pump water out of an aquifer. However, one pump is enough to keep about four tiles almost dry. So either you need a lot of pumps, or the aquifer will eventually dry up.
I think one of my dwarves got pissed off at the racoon constantly interrupting him, there's the lower body and the upper body of the racoon at the bottom of this hill

Okay, so I created another world and tried to start a game in it, and Dwarf Fortress is again not responding. Does the game just take a while to prepare and appears to freeze for a while?

we need a new OP, that gets asked every page.
I bound it to pgUp and pgDown, makes it much easier though make sure you unbind numpad 9 and 3 or else your view will be jumping all over the place
When placing an axle, you can change the orientation. I forget the key, though.
Also: you can change the length, which is nice, because it reduces the amount of wood you need.

Unlucky you.
Can marksdwarves attack targets below them? These imps are basically stuck at the bottom of a lava well, and picking 'em off'd be good training.

yeah, a few people have generated bugged worlds
I was hoping the murky water in the lakes would be good enough, but I guess not.

You can however rewall a space adjacent to where you want the door to go, place the door, and remove the wall.

I hope it's the second.
I'll probably flood the world before then.
