Got it today. I have ridiculously fond memories of the original, although it got mind-bindingly hard about two thirds in and I just quit playing. Still, I have fonder memories of it than I do of the original Pokemon, so I jumped on this and am still without Diamond or Pearl.
I got mine around lunch but haven't had a chance to try it yet. The gameplay doesn't sound as fun as Pokemon; I like having a ridiculous amount of things to do in a game. This seems limited to just the monster battling aspect. And, as always, I hate the artwork. I'll give it a shot tho.
If you play this genre for the RPG style play and the battle system, this is better.
If you play this genre for the sheer amount of creatures to collect and a wide variety of side missions, mini games, etc. then Pokemon is better.
Basically, this doesn't have everything Pokemon has, but what it does have it does better. DQM is more my kind of game, personally... you know that old joke about two old women who complain about the quality of the food in a restaurant, but then one defends it by saying "but it has such large portions!"? That's what Pokemon feels like to me: it's got a ton of stuff to do, very little of which I find entertaining.
To each his own, though. They're different enough that they can both comfortably fill a need in someone's collection anyway.

If I played it for that, I wouldn't touch it at all. It's basically DQ8's system which is probably the worst RPG system out there. Attack>Attack>Attack>Heal>Repeat. Pokemon has a LOT more going for it with the match-up system. That isn't even present here.
So far the game is mildly fun but seems nothing special.I was excited about the equipment system but that just turned out to be "buy the next strongest thing" Again, no tactics involved in what you equip. So far, anyway.
