Aside from controller Vs. keyboard/mouse differences between the PC and Xbox 360 versions of HL2 + Episodes. Are there any changes to level design or gameplay differences between the console version and PC version without mods?

(There was someone who posted earlier that there was a minor graphics change between PC and 360 when Dr. Kliener presents the player with the Hazard suit notepad, and dusts off the cover. PC'ers see the dust, those on the 360 don't. This surprises me, but it isn't terribly significant.) Are there any other changes like this?

I think the 360 version of Laf-Life 2 has had a major graphical overhall. They've added HDR lighting and some improved reflections, there was a video about this somewhere (I think on gametrailers) but it's kinda hard to find. I also think they improved the models of the vortigaunts and some of the other characters too.

Apparently Gabe has said these might come to the PC at some point in time, but valve is a slow lumbering beast when it comes to things like this.

Outside of that, there's some really nice graphic mods for HL2 on the PC though. Cinema Mod provides something like 2-3gb of high res textures and more detailed alyx models

    edit: thanks.

I would imagine portal would be a lot harder on a console.

They won't charge for new maps.

Got a source for that? And is that referring to PC or 360 version? Personally I only look forward to playing new maps made by Valve anyways, because given the art style, most user-made maps will likely stick out like a sore thumb even if they play well. And they better bring back Warpath. I used to play on a TFC server that was nothing but Dustbowl and Warpath and it was glorious.

    What is Warpath?
Home-made ones might re-do some of my favorite Enemy Territory maps, though.

I know they've said it previously, but I don't have a source. I could ask them if you want one, they usually reply.

Also, it'd be a shitty move to charge for maps, which is enough of a reason to assume Valve won't do it IMO.

    I emphatically disagree.

Orange box is literallty one of the best value packages ever, however you measure it.

Additional free DLC would certainly be nice, but they really don't owe us anything.

I think the real question is, which box looks worse. Orange Box PC (orange) or Orange Box 360 (lime green)

I need to take a picture of my orange 360 box

It's not only lime green its also bright "mein eyes!" orange. Kinda reminds me of Surge. Or that Slimer brand Hi-C juicebox crap I used to drink as a kid.

these is NO lime green on my box ;-)

On the couch vs desk debate.

My 360 is hooked up as a second input to my left monitor. When I play FPSes, I am sitting at my computer, holding a console controller.

I make no excuses of comfort and settings. I simply prefer console control.

I would imagine portal would be a lot harder on a console.

actually, it's pretty simple, since it doesn't have lots of different things to worry about (melee, grenades, etc.)

left and right triggers are portal guns (left is orange, right is blue)

and then one bumper is jump, and one is hold

and click down on the right stick to crouch

you never need to move any finger anywhere.

I ended up, after much debate, to get the 360 version last night. I just didn't want to take the chance to not get TF2, EP2 to run well on my current 3 years old computer...

Shouldn't be a problem. Half-Life 2 is almost 3 years old, and it could run on middle-of-the-road machines back then.

Heck, I game on a LAPTOP with INTEGRATED GRAPHICS (Geforce go 6150) and OEM drivers that haven't been updated since February.

I run Orange Box in 1280x800 with only a few problems (like if a lot of dust is kicked up into the air or something.) Just have to turn HDR and AA off, play with the settings a little bit and the Source engine runs like hot BUTTER.

My computer is a 5 year old 800MHz PowerBook G4. I'm slowly saving up to buy a ridiculously overpowered Mac Pro, which I fully intend to load up with Parallels and XP or Vista to finally play a bunch of games I've longed for.

Saving up enough/getting given enough gift cards will probably take a few more months, so I figure I'll wait for the next product cycle anyway. HL2 and all its delicious trimmings are one of the platters I long for most- I always figures I'd just do the whole steam thing, but now I'm wondering if I should just take the plunge and get it all for my 360 now instead of waiting.

    Any thoughts?

I say get the 360 version.

I'm really annoyed buying games that don't work out of the box for PC's. On the 360 there will never be a point that you drop the game in and can't play.

I played through Ep2, Portal and messed around with TF2 online on the 360 and I thought the controller was fine for all. I didn't care for TF2 online at that time but I think there is a patch in the works for that.

If you're only buying TF2 I'd probably go PC, but if you want the whole box i think 360 is the way to go.

I bought Orange Box for the PC because that's where my friends bought it, but since getting good at the claw grip with a 360 controller, it's becoming a harder decision. I used to be very much "PC for FPS's, keyboard + mouse, rawr rawr, rabble rabble"....but since getting really good with the claw grip, it's starting not to matter as much. Keyboard + mouse is still the most precise, but I can live without it now.

I rented the 360 version and the only thing I don't like is how laggy TF2 is, plus I want mods. So I think I'm beat Episode Two on 360, but buy the Orange Box on PC in a few weeks, and enjoy it that way.

And I loved Portal on 360. It wasn't difficult to control at all.

PC is better because it goes on first and cleans the hair!
360 is better because it leaves the hair silky and smoothe!

    STOP LOOKING AT ME SWAN

...but really, if you have a decent PC, get that version because KB+M is superior (though gamepads work just fine, they're just not preferable to the FPS environment which requires faster turning and precision aim) in my opinion.

    I've got an AMD 4200+, 2GBs of RAM and a 7900GTX -- I run Source titles beautifully.

But I'm afraid to buy Orange Box and play it until I replace the case fans and clean out the case, as playing Episode One pushes my temperatures rather high.

I will never buy a prebuilt again, after building a few boxes for friends. My PC is a giant box of horrible wiring and no smooth airflow.

    I've got a notebook:

    Dell Latitude D820
    Intel Dual-Core Processor (1.66 GHz)
    Quadro NVS 120M video card

Would this be okay to run it? I've already had some crappy experiences with Steam running thr Painkiller demo at triple speed because of my processor; I reset the affinity for the game's .exe file, and it works! And then it doesn't work ever, ever again!

I had no opinion of Steam prior to downloading it, but now I have to concede that it is an infuriating piece of software.

Steam was really shitty back in the day and I was a bonafied steam hater. Nowadays I wonder why every game doesnt come out on steam. Have you contacted Valve support?

I'm given to understand that Steam's support service at the moment is comparable to the DMV without the horrid smell and evil-eyed women but with time slowed down even further.

Either way it's just a demo, but it bothers me regardless. Steam ferrets around in my system without my permission so I'm inherently suspicious of it.
