Hey all, just wanted to say I had a blast playing with everyone tonight. I will definitely be joining the PA servers in the future. Could someone toss me (Raptor563 on Steam as well) an invite to the Penny Arcade group. That'd be awesome.
I have 2 questions about Engineer Gun Placement.
1) Is the facing of the gun that important? they seem to be able to fire 360 degrees. Is there a faster target aquisition when they are facing an opponent?
2) I have also seen guns shoved WAY into corners that are rotated towards the middle of the room. How do you place a gun like that? Is there a way to set a gun down and rotate it before placing it?
Most of what I have learned about engineering is by mimicing what I have seen others do. I have gotten some insane scores as engineer, but I attribute those mostly to poor opponents over personal brilliance. I have seen what a quality demoman can do to the best sentry placements.
You want the Sentry Gun to be pointing in the general direction where the other team would be coming from. Obviously, if it is facing away from an enemy, it'll take a few extra seconds before it can fire on them.
Putting Sentry Guns in corners doesn't always work in your favor. A corner is just that. If you're baby sitting it and you're getting pressed hard, you're pretty much stuck there until you die. The best way to corner yourself is to drop a Dispenser and do a crouch+jump onto it then build a Sentry Gun near it so you can stand on the Dispenser and pound away at the Sentry.
Just remember that your own Dispenser/Sentry Gun is tangible and you can stand on it. Other people cannot. So you can block off a doorway with your shit but everyone else should be able to get through.
Are you sure about that? I thought for sure I've hopped on other people's stuff before...
The change I'd like to see to engineers is having it take more metal to upgrade to level 3 because, if they have time to put up a sentry, they have time to make it to level 3. It seems a little ridiculous for it to be so easy to throw up something that powerful.
From the engineer's perspective:
Oh, my level 1 sentry keeps getting blown up as soon as I try to build. Ok, I'll move back further, find more metal and try again. *Whew* finally got the level 1 sentry... oh it was blown up. Ok, find more metal and build again. Ok, level 1 sentry up! Yeah! Ok, it's only upgraded to 10... where was that metal? Ok, over there.... oh, a scout on my team just picked it up. Ok, wait for it. Oh, my sentry was destroyed again.
--cut to finally getting a level 3 sentry built--
Oh, it was blown up. :x
Yeah, I'm exaggerating, but it's not all cake and parties as an engineer.
I still think that they should tone down sentry damage and knockback while increasing hitpoints.
It really depends on the situation. I can't count the number of times I built a dispenser first and was killed or had my stuff destroyed because I didn't have the protection of the gun. In any case, if the only metal you have is from a dispenser, it can take quite a while to fully upgrade your sentry, especially if you need to repair in there as well.

Man, no way. A well positioned sentry seems perfectly difficult to take down for a soldier/demo man. The time it takes to kill them is what makes them challenging, IMO. It takes time to lay down stickies and a lot of the time i'll be killed while in the process of laying down a small field. Unless I get lucky and don't have to worry about the sentry/other enemies seeing me since I can lob them across a barrier, like that one time I got you, your dispensor, and your sentry in one fell sticky mine swoop
On pyro I love it when an errant sticky or rocket catapults me over a group of guys from the other team. Death from above, suckers!
I know pyros do better with ambush tactics, but I love going in as a berzerker and causing as much havoc as possible before I go down. Hearing 5 guys screaming FIRE FIRE is pretty hilarious and if it stops some engineers from setting up sentries or buys us some time defending then I think it's worth it.
edit: I only do this at choke points or when the other team's charging our base. Doesn't work so well when the enemy's spread out.

I think their reaction times outside their visual range needs to be reduced. They should be more or less one directional with some ability to hit stuff behind.
Every time I join a pub, I'm like "oh hey, there's no <insert class here> on the team, i'll play that". I play through a death, then press tab as I spectate the respawn timer out... and suddenly there's now 4 people playing <insert class here>. So I switch to <insert another class> to try to keep the team varied. Next death, same process.
When there is no spy/engineer on my team, I switch to said class, and as soon as my name starts appearing with backstabs/sentry kills suddenly everyone seems to switch to those classes.
Seems like half the time I join a pub, I end up on a team with like 4 snipers and 4 engineers...and the other team has similar. Congratulations, guys, you've voluntarily created the most boring game ever. It's like the TF2 version of the Prisoner's Dilemma.
Of course, I'm not blameless. Earlier I jumped on one that already had two snipers, and I still went sniper; I'm finally trying to get the Gray Matter achievement. There's no real way I'll manage it on the PA servers, that's for sure...I suck at the sniping.
Pubs aren't a whole lot of fun usually, simply because the team in team fortress is often pretty lacking in them. At least in my, albeit limited, experience. But it's a good way to get some practice in the very basics of a class before you start playing in the more dedicated severs where you can buff up on teamwork. I never feel too bad for being a horribly shitty spy in a pub while I get the rhythm down, but I would in a game where the other people are actually trying to contribute to the whole.
I don't know I've found a lot of good pubs. Well, about 4. I avoid ones with custom maps and I've seen a few with odd teams such as half demo half engineer. But I usually reluctantly take the needed role.
I prefer the pyro mostly. I went on a roll and killed 7 people. After a couple kills I start getting a bunch of critical shots.

Ahh, gotta love korean/japanese servers.
Whoa! whoa! which Korean server are you playing on because most Korean servers I play on you can't walk 5 feet without running into another Engineer on either team. Just because there are a lot of real life Korean engineers in real life doesn't mean you have to play one in a game! Try being the lone scout or heavy; for some odd reason every-time is see someone playing those classes on the Korean server it's always the guys not playing from Korea (100+ ping).

Agreed. Trying to get the 10 kills with sgun achievement is so hard because I always find like 4 other engys playing, I feel bad and then choose to play another class instead.

Further query: why is teammate "pushing" still a feature?
