Mario and Sonic: How would YOU do it?

edited October 2007 in Games and Technology
So I've been thinking on this a bit lately, and between Sega's Olymipic crossover game and Sonic's guest appearance in Brawl, it seems like both companies are testing the waters for a honest to goodness crossover platformer. At least, we all hope and pray they are. But how would you go about mixing the two? This is what I envison.

Two games, Mario and Sonic for the Wii, Sonic and Mario for the DS. Why the different titles? Because M+S would be developed by Nintendo and primarily feature Mario and friends, and S+M (teehee) would be developed by Sega, and primarily feature the blue guy. Sega's clearly shown their strength is on handhelds when it comes to Sonic (sonic advance, sonic rush) so they would be the best choice for a handheld2d platformer, and if anyone knows how to make Sonic work in 3d, it'd probably be Nintendo.

Core mechanics that I'd like to see between both games:

Four characters from each series, Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Peach, and their counterparts, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.

So each "team" would have their own set of levels. The first level for each character (Sonic's side and Mario's side would only be available on their respective games initially, and then you'd unlock the other side through the game, I'll explain why in a minute) would be open, and beating it would unlock the next level for that character, this way you could play through the game as any character you wanted at any time.

Each team (Mario/Sonic) would play similarly, with different traits, of course (Sonic's faster, Mario jumps higher)

Mario/Sonic would be your all around platformy team, Luigi/Tails would be floatier, DK/Knuckles would be brawler/climber guys, and Peach/Amy would use weapons (Parasol, big frickin' hammer)

now each team would have one character designated a "buster" and one a "glider."

Mario glides with his cape, Peach glides with her parasol, Knuckles glides, uh, however the hell he does, and Tails glides with his tail.

that's pretty self explanatory.

Busters can break blocks that Gliders can't.

Sonic Busts them with his Spin Dash, Amy with her big huge hammer, DK with his pure monkey strength, and Luigi, well, haven't figured that part out yet. (edit: possibly by using the Poltergust 3000 to suck up projectiles and fire them at the blocks?)

But this opens up the levels. Parts will be accessible by Gliders, and parts will be accessible by Busters. This gives you incentive to replay the levels as the characters you unlock.

What do I want to see as the main enemy? A Roboticized Bowser in a souped-up Clown Cup.

I have more (Mini-games that pit each game's counterpart against each other, downloadable levels from "classic" sonic and mario games that you can play as any character in) but that's the gist of it.

I'd love to hear some of your ideas on the subject.

Why DK instead of Yoshi? Donkey Kong is really more of his own brand.

DK fits both the "friendly rival" personality and gameplay mechanics of knuckles.

this is why Sega would be developing one and Nintendo the other. One would play like Mario and one would play like Sonic.

Though I certainly see your point of view on the subject.

So why doesn't Nintendo make a JUST mario game and Sega can make a JUST sonic game if they are each making games that would "feel" like their normal style?

Well maybe Nintendo should make the mario game and the sonic game.

A crossover platfomer would be...interesting. Since they are both radically different, they would either have to find the middle-ground or come up with an entirely new formula.

Well, you'd get to see Sega's take on Mario and Nintendo's take on Sonic.

Besides, Nintendo does JUST make Mario games, and Sega does JUST make Sonic games. This would be what is known as a collaboration.

    which would be my hope

The combination of the two should feel like a separate thing apart from either series.

I actually like the idea of their pairings taking place in non-platforming genres precisely because as platformers they're so different that I can't really a crossover like that working too well.

platformer? No I don't think so. The main series of games they are in are very different. Throwing in the other would be for cameo appearances. Then again theres some game designers that could easily make it work (Go Shiggy)

However if they made it an RPG, I'd be all over it

That would be awesome. A platformer would be much more likely. And if they both put their best guys to it, treated it like a serious project, I have no doubt it'd be awesome.

Way back when we had a thread about how to save Sonic, this was precisely my suggestion. Give the series to Nintendo.

Considering that the video intro of Sonic in Smash Bros. eclipsed any recent game in quality - and it's a frigging fighting/party game even - I still see nothing wrong with this course of action.

I think Sonic should have taken the same approach as Mario in his transition to 3D. You could open his world up a bit instead of on-rails design. Let that fucker run around. Each world with objectives to complete.

Sonic has always had great physics. Give him a awesomely designed world to take advantage of this. Obviously this would take shit tons of talent.

I would really like to see a "Mario and Sonic" RPG that features all of those worlds and things from the old NES, SNES, Genesis and Master System era... Mario and Sonic could be the main protagonists roaming through all the crazy console exclusive worlds of the past.

I don't know man. They are so different in design. The best I can think of is giving each character a unique special ability and either switching/working together.

You would need to give Mario/Luigi some specific ability. Maybe like some built in power ups like all time fire power because Sonic can do everything Mario can plus some extra shit like running up walls. It would work like Donkey Kong 64 just without the massive collection fest.

Also, mixing power ups is amusing. Sonic with flower power and Mario in the bubble.

I'd want there to be one game, it'd have to be on the Wii.

Two seperate Campaigns. One starring Mario & Bowser the other starring Sonic & Eggman. The game's plot would involve some new villian set up to threaten both universes and the need for the main villians/heroes to team up. For Mario/Bowser I imagine it'd be some cheesy thing like the new villian kidnaps Princess Toadstool, and Bowser is all, "Hey! That's my job!" and something more complicated for Sonic/Eggman. Perhaps some kind of magic ring making them have to stay close to eachother, so because they both hate eachother so much, they have to work together to escape the fate of a life together.

Mario/Bowser's quest would play similarly to Kingdom Hearts, except have much more emphasis on puzzles, and the two characters would have to work together to solve them much like in Mario & Luigi games.

Sonic/Eggman would be much more speed/platforming oriented, and for puzzles having some kind of rubberband effect on Robotnik because of how much slower he'd be (and the idea that they'd be linked by a magic ring that would only allow them to stray a certain distance from eachother) and combat would probably still be handled in Kingdom Hearts fashion.

Then obviously the character's storylines would interact, and they would gain party members from the opposing games blah blah blah, maybe the final battle would have Mario/Sonic working together.

I'm not really a fan of the crossover concept, but this is how I'd do it.

If I were going to make a Sonic and Mario game, I'll make so Bowser and Dr. Robotnik are going after this ancient power so they can finally rule the world/score with the princess of a mushroom kingdom. They meet at the ancient power, and decide to team up and help each other instead of fight, because the power requires 7 gems and a princess of anything...

I was going to write a plot that combines every mario and sonic plot in the last decade to make fun of the plot in every mario and sonic game in the last decade, but I don't think the joke is worth the work.
