So uhm, .avi files and DVDs show up as completely black when I try to view them. I can hear the sound fine, though. If I go into my display properties and turn off hardware acceleration (without rebooting), I can view the videos then. If I turn it back up to full (without rebooting) I can still view the videos. Weird.
So uh, is my video card on its way to destruction or something? I can play Team Fortress 2 and Portal just fine...
Were you able to play DVDs on this computer in the past? Sounds to me like it could be a codec problem, but first things first, I'd try (re)installing the latest video card drivers.
Next, if you still can't get any video while playing a dvd, I'd try playing a DVD with this program ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ), which doesn't require any codecs to playback dvds.

I used to see it with MJPEG codecs alot. It really just seems like a combination of codec + DX9 + card not playing well together. But if it makes you feel better most of those machines are still out in the field chugging along after a few years.

I just uninstalled my video drivers, and uninstalled this old tweaking program that I had for like 4-5 years now. Then I installed new drivers that came out this month. Everything seems to be working fine now with full hardware acceleration. Hm, weird, prior to this incident I had updated the drivers already to try to get Team Fortress 2 to stop crashing.
