I have a huge hard-on for trancey shmups, and in this regard XBLA has been the best thing since sliced bread.

    My must-haves:
    • Geometry Wars -- it's everyone's favorite, but still: daaaaaaaang.
    • Pac-Man: CE -- this is so far beyond "New levels for Pac-Man" as it was marketed. Combine Pac-Man with Geometry Wars and a timed bullet-hell shmup.
    • Heavy Weapon: Not so trancey of a shmup, but it's still ragingly fun. The demo is really deceptive, since the game doesn't start ramping up until after Level 5 or so -- brutally hard and just full of destruction.
    • Bomberman Live: Obviously.
    • Streets of Rage 2: I actually don't have this, as I foolishly bought the Wii VC version, but Live co-op and a cheaper price make this the better version.

    Maybes, depending on your tastes:
    • E4 (Every Extend Extra Extended): Holy shit, do I love this game. It's like a trance-electronica shooter mixed with an MP3 visualizer that rewards you for staying to the backbeat and provides audio feedback in time with the music. It wins especially because you can play your own songs over it, once the game learns the song's BPM -- I spent about an hour yesterday playing this to Radiohead's "15 Step" over and over and over again.
    • Space Giraffe: Note that the game's entire purpose is to overload your senses. Play through the tutorial and you'll get a sense of how to actually score well.
    • Puzzle Quest: I didn't snap on this as I own the DS version and feel the game works best on a portable, but if you don't have this already you need to buy it and love it as the crack-laced chocolate-coated drug that it is.

Re: Puzzle Quest on XBLA -- two words, downloadable content.

I bought 8 games of of Xbox Live Arcade and then my Xbox died on me. I saved the hard-drive and put it on the new Xbox and it will only let me play the full games if I am logged into Xbox Live. So Xbox Live Arcade and I have some relationship issues.

I wish the games were cheaper but Xbox Live is the only place you can get them so it's hard to argue with what they price it at.

Add small arms to the games to be avoided list. I promise you'll not like the game.

    hold the phone here!

me and my friends love this game, its smash bros with shooting... how could you not like it?

id say it deserves a yellow but definetly not a red

Oh boy. I don't want to have to fight it out, but sir... Get out your fisticuffs! We're dueling right here!!

I bought the game, when it was on sale for 250MS points, and it wasn't worth that. It feels too slow, the levels are incredibly repetitive and the shooting is really boring... Nothing about the game is special.

To each their own, of course, but if you play the demo (I did first, and slightly enjoyed it) and REALLY liked it; You might be okay.

have you played it on multiplayer? i admit the game is very bland on single player but if you get some friends togethor that know how to play games then its fun as hell.

its definetly not a single player game.

    Carcassonne is most definitely local.

If I had my way Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo HD should be like, double greened. It too has local multiplayer and an epic shit-ton of awesome.
Dan as last boss made me shit my pants with laughter

Every Extend Extra Extreme also ownsed my bones, though it kind of lost all meaning when I got to 2.5 trillion points and a half an hour in so I decided to end it on my own... Will probably do the exact same again today.

damnit, I knew I was forgetting something... Puzzle Fighter is like the best multiplayer game on xbla, ever.
    EVER!

It's pretty funny, I was almost able to convince a friend to buy a 360 totally because I told him that puzzle quest and super puzzle fighter were on xbla

Assault Heroes needs some yellow or green loving. Kicking ass on foot for the win.

Yes. I get motion sickness with a lot of the older FPS' ie. wolfenstein, doom 1 etc.

I'll agree with Jules on Assault Heroes. It's really fun if you have a friend to play co-op.

    My favorite XBLA games are:
Geometry Wars - They should really consider putting GW:Waves on XBLA also
Marble Blast Ultra - Would be nice to see some DLC for it..
Space Giraffe - Is really cool once you figure out how to rack up the points
Pinball FX - I keep coming back to this game a lot. I just hope the DLC doesn't cost too much as 800 points for 3 tables was kind of a lot.
    Bomberman Live

    Games to stay away from:
Wing Commander - horrible, just don't
Novadrome - This game could have been cool.. but it's not

I was thinking of picking up Tetris. When I went to go download it I saw like a dozen mini addon packs. And this was on the same day it was released. Stuff like back grounds and other minor things that should have been in the full game to begin with. This elicited a huge fuck you response from me and as such I will never buy it.

The thing I don't understand about this mentality -- 1) the extra fluff in Tetris Splash has no bearing on the main game whatsoever, and 2) you'd be sending a much better voting-with-your-wallet message by buying the main game and not buying the DLC than by rejecting the entire sale. By not buying it at all, you're only pushing up the proportion of "people who bought the game and then bought DLC," because plenty of poor saps are going to end up spending 50 cents on a fish.

That said, I haven't bought Tetris Splash, but only because I have Tetris DS and I cringe having to use the 360 Dpad for that kind of speed and precision.

the only games i've actually bought are Bomberman, Catan, Geometry Wars, Track and Field and Speedball 2. I was also rather taken with the Outpost Kaloki X demo.

Saying that though, i have an obscenely huge list of Arcade demos that i haven't tried yet, so i may well give Eets another shot.

My main issue with Tetris Splash is that you can't touch the hard drop and ghost piece options until you have 5 and 9 achievements. My girlfriend likes playing with me, but she hates those features and it'd be nice to be able to disable them for her from the outset like you should just fucking be able to.

Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update revealed: download Halo December 2

by Scott Jon Siegel Nov 13th 2007 5:55AM
Filed under: Microsoft Xbox, Microsoft Xbox 360

Official Xbox Magazine has the scoop on the Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update, and you better believe it's a doozy. UK-based CVG reports that the December 2 update will allow 360 owners to download and play Microsoft-published Xbox 1 games on their 360s.

Let's say that one more time: come December 2, you will be able to download full, original Xbox games to the Xbox 360. The initial list of available games includes Fable, Indigo Prophecy, Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex, Burnout 3, and, of course, Halo: Combat Evolved.

Games will cost approximately 1200 Microsoft Points, or $15 USD. Microsoft plans on re-releasing as many Xbox 1 titles as possible through Marketplace. Look out, Virtual Console.

That seems pretty damned awesome. Opens up the Arcade to a whole nother level, especially for people who decided to jump on the MS bandwagon with the 360, they got to see what they missed with Halo, Fable, KOTOR if it comes, etc.

    Discuss, if you will.

How is the co-op play? It's doable through Live, right? I'm sorely tempted by MSE. The original one didn't really do it for me with being in self-contained rooms, but I like the longer stage aspect of MSE that also helps set it off from GW.

I haven't tried the online co-op myself, but it's definitely doable on Live (everytime I checked there were a couple of games waiting for players). If you didn't like the original MS, I would definitely at least check out the demo as the two games have very different styles and liking one doesn't necessarily mean you'll like the other. Personally, I think they're both great games: the original is the longer game and probably more of a challenge for the hardest of hardcore gamers, however the second game has much more variety from stage to stage.
