This deal (the value of it!) puts me very, very close to getting the HD-DVD drive.
Pretty much the only things holding me back are
1) The not-that-great 17" CRT monitor I'm using and
2) The more-than expected amount of money I spent when I picked up my 360 last month.

I know there is some kind of update for it online you just have to download, burn onto a CD/DVD and run it in the player. Might give that a try. If that doesn't work, maybe you got a bad one.
Hope mine works when I get it tomorrow, lol.
No...mine's definately bad. It shouldn't make a noise like that when a regular DVD is put in...
GRR.
Bah.
Edit: After talking to XBOX Customer Support, they confirmed that it's a hardware malfunction and would need a repair, which would take up to 2 to 4 weeks. So, I'm contacting Buy.com to see if they can get one to me quicker.
God...this day sucks...

Hey guys, I wanted to report my experience at Best Buy. Basically I got everything we've been talking about in this thread, including the two extra discs ($34.99 and under) but it took some haggling. There was a manager there who was very adamant that the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player was not an HD-DVD player, but rather was a "gaming accessory." The wording in their ad says "buy any HD-DVD player and receive any two HD-DVDs free!" I pointed to the part of the player's box that says "HD-DVD player" and she said "Yes, yes I know, but we consider it a gaming accessory"
"So, you mean it doesn't play HD-DVDs? That's what HD-DVD players do" "Yes it will play them but we don't conside-" I cut her off and told her that I don't really care what they consider it, the wording in their advertisment doesn't make a distinction, and this deal was the only reason I was there instead of checking out on buy.com.
She ended up honoring the advertisment, but told me not to spread that fact around. Whoops!

So the bestbuy thing is very, very YMMV.
Not anymore it isn't.
All Best Buys were sent corporate emails telling them they had to honor the deal. It took me 3 trips, and a call to a customer service rep, who then called the manager of the Best Buy and told him this wasn't his call, he had to give me the movies, he then apologized and I got my stuff.
So yes, anyone who buys this at Best Buy will get their extra 2 movies, and if you purchased already you just need to bring in your receipt. If they still refuse, which they shouldn't cause it's in their email, call a customer service rep.
I managed to get this deal last night, got the very last player they had, the employee that was helping me was actually nice about it and helped me pick out the hd dvds...
on some other forums, people are reporting that they got away with using box sets like matrix and planet earth for their 2, instead of the ones under $34
Just got home with HD-DVD player, Serenity, King Kong, 300, and Heroes ($360 value according to best buy) for $193
n
+ Mail in rebate. The extras thrown in pay off the player itself not including the rebate, and yes, you can pick any two movies as long as they are 34.99 or cheaper (so two for $70)
anyone know if you can plug this directly into a hdtv that has a usb 2.0 input?
The answer is a resounding no.
What you need to make this work is a beefy processor, a good video card, HD-DVD software and some form of video out to the device you plan to watch this on.
So, PC or 360.

How do you get this working on PC? My buddy has my xbox while his is being repaired. I have it all hooked up, it installed drivers and I put in king kong but it show sup as a cdrom drive. When I try to open the disc in my computer it says it is corrupted or something.

Sounds like you need a DVD decoder program. I don't think XP comes with a decoder built in; Vista might not either. They have to pay a license fee to enable DVD decoding (and maybe even more for HD-DVD?), so that's why it's not available everywhere.
I do not know if there are legit free DVD decoders; I hope there are. Otherwise you need something like PowerDVD.

My understanding, to clear this up a little, was that the DVD encode/decode was reverse engineered which is why basically any good free player software supports DVDs. The same thing hasn't happened yet for HD DVDs or Blu-ray so your stuck having to buy a player to play them, the most popular one being PowerDVD.

However, since I don't have the playback software yet, couldn't actually watch it. I think it simply labeled it as a disc drive (no CD / DVD / whatever), but it did show up as using 20-ish GB when I put an HD-DVD in it (edit again: It did allow me to browse the disc, just couldn't actually play it).

But wouldn't it just show the files like a dvd?
Probably not, but even if it does you won't be able to play them as you can't decode them. Cyberlink has free trials for its software that should work though, I haven't it tried to it myself though.
I just got back from getting my drive at Best Buy.
I got the last one and next to it was a sign saying the Ad was a misprint and the 2 free movies didn't apply to the 360 Drive. So I go and get Heroes and 2 movies that I will get for free regardless of what the manager says. I bring the stuff to the register and check out and everything is deducted anyways. So it sounds like the manager left the sign out to fool anyone who didn't have the fortitude to stand up for themselves.
I got a HD-DVD Drive with Heroes Season 1 and 8 movies (Transformers, Hot fuzz, and King Kong [came with the drive]) and 5 yet to be picked movies for a grand total of $340 off retail ($30 average per movie + 99.99 for Heroes). $189.99 after taxes.
"Blu-ray Disc titles began outselling HD DVD titles early in the year and have consistently maintained an edge, week after week. Even Paramount Home Entertainment’s release of the DreamWorks theatrical blockbuster Transformers exclusively on the HD DVD format didn’t tip the scale last week. Though there was no hot new Blu-ray Disc release, consumers continued to buy more Blu-ray Discs than HD DVDs for the week ended Oct. 21, albeit by a slim 51% to 49% edge. Paramount says Transformers sold 190,000 units its first week in stores, but Home Media Magazine market research and studio estimates puts the actual number of units that sold through to consumers closer to 115,000."
Er, the difference between sales is 51:49 which is very very close, and that was for last week. Nice attempt at trolling. try again next week.
edit 2-
As for the clearance remark, both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players have a two free movie sale in best buy's add, and they both offer 5 free movies through mail in rebate.
A Best Buy employee told me they were getting a new version of the 360 HD DVD player, and that's why they were on sale. (And that the new version wouldn't include King Kong.) Other than that he had no details, so who knows if he's correct. But anyway, that's another possible explanation for the sale, not directly related to sales of HD-DVDs.
Also, they had the exact same "buy a player and get free movies by mail" back when DVD players were new, so it's not a tactic that says "clearance" at all. Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD camps simply want to get their installed base as high as possible.

If I walk into a Best Buy and try to get those 2 extra movies, and they say "No", what's my best next step? Talk to a manager and tell them there was a corporate e-mail saying the deal applied? Is there something I could print and take with me to help prove that?

Best tactic I've heard is that you just call 1800BESTBUY, and the operator there will confirm the deal, then either give you a case number to tell the store manager, so they can call and confirm it, or you can just hand the phone over and have them confirm it directly. From what I've read, this works even on the most stubborn managers, as the person on the phone basically tells them it's not their decision to make.
I would take more than a little pleasure in handing a phone to a Best Buy manager and watching him/her squirm while being told what to do and how to run his/her store by an operator at customer service.

It's not trolling. Blu-Ray titles have consistently outsold HD-DVD by an almost 2-1 margin all year. It's 51-49 just this week. For the year its 65-35.
Besides, the 65-35 ratio is in a market where HD movies are only like 2% of all total movie sales? Surely no more than 5%.
For either side it seems a little silly and it's still way more about making the technology affordable and put out there for consumers. Sadly right now, outside of price, the only thing I can imagine making or breaking either one is having the overall better movie selection. Which is, of course, subjective.
Getting this player into the hands of 360 owners at a good price is a fantastic move. Still, with PS3 still lacking its heavy hitters, I dunno this format war is gonna go on for freaking years.
Of course if and really when 1440i/p comes out then we're all screwed since at least old players won't be able to put out that high. I don't know about the limitations of the discs though...

Woo. Heroes just arrived.
And I still have a dead player. Buy.com's customer service blows. Their site says to contact them to return it, since it's part of a special deal, but after sending them an email and waiting two days for a response, they said to use the site. Which it won't let me do.

So now that I have the player I updated my netflix account to send me hd-dvd movies when available. But now im in the tight spot of either waiting for the HD version or just having them send the regular dvds. I really want to see transformers and blood diamond but they have a long wait, and a very long wait on hd-dvd. So hard to wait!
So does anyone have experience with netflix and hd-dvd? Am I pretty much always going to have to wait a few weeks before I can get popular new releases on hd?
