I went down to BB today, and had my rain check for Heroes ready in case they had any in and hadn't contacted me yet. They did, so I grab one, and head over to customer service, and state that I'm simply getting Heroes, and hand them my rain check and receipt.
While waiting, I notice they have one of the little notices that the flyer contained a "typo" in regards to 2 free DVD's (in all honesty, it did seem to say "get 2 movies in box on HD DVD players", didn't seem that confusing to me, and didn't seem to apply to the 360 HD-DVD). Anyways, a couple minutes later, they're done, and handed me back $58 some. I ask if I should be getting change, I thought I was only picking up my free copy of Heroes, and they state that it's for the 2 movies I purchased with the player the other day (Transfomers & Serenity).
So, assuming the mail in deal is $20 per movie (probably closer to $25), when all is said and done, I'll have $255 worth of movies / media, for buying a $180 player.

I'm actually impressed all around with the technology. Seems to be some "graininess" in some of the movies (could be because it's a 720P TV) but everything is gorgeous otherwise. It's so nice that blacks are actually black now, and not blackish squares.
I had never seen a single episode of Heroes prior to tonight (I work on the night it's on, plus no DVR) and I'm really impressed with both the show itself, and how well it shows off the HD-DVD features & quality (the way features work during the show, looking at artwork, picture in picture stuff, how characters are connected). The only thing I'm disappointed with is the media remote that came with the player. If it's not absolutely pointed at the receiver on the 360, it wont's register, and half the times buttons just don't seem to work anyways. Also that the best I can get it to do with my TV is volume and turning it off, but not turning it back on again.
Oh, and is there even slow motion on this thing? I've tried every button with no luck O_o

The confusion came from the ad itself. There was two HD-DVD players featured in the ad, the addon and the Toshiba player. On the page with the Toshiba, it said "get any two HD-DVD movies for $34.99 with purchase of ANY HD-DVD player" and it also said in separate box "plus two packed in movies (300 and another)" So if you bought the Toshiba player, you would have got four movies plus the 5 mail in rebate.
The question is does the HD-DVD add-on count as a HD-DVD player. IMO it does, and bestbuy seemed to agree, cause not only did they send out a corporate e-mail but they automatically updated the registers to reflect said sale. The only stores that would have left the sign up declaring it a typo was those trying to convince people not to attempt to ring up two more movies with their purchase, because honestly, when you are getting two movies of your choice + Heroes + King Kong, are you very likely to buy a 5th right there and then?
Reminder, tomorrow is your last chance to get in on it, and I am quite surprised you got a rain check for it, the ad does say "while supplies last"

I used to work at the store, plus the guy that was in media there that day knew that I had answered a bunch of questions for another customer who ended up buying a 360 and a crap ton of games / accessories. He actually asked me if I wanted a rain check when he saw the player in my hands, before I could even ask.
As to the "other 2 free movies", I hadn't even noticed the deal in the flyer at first, and although I did learn about it before going back today, I wasn't going to try pursuing it in any way. It just came as a pleasant surprise being handed Heroes and $58.83. Now I'm just trying to decide which movies for the mail in rebate. The Frighteners, Full Metal Jacket and The Thing are the absolutes, can't decide from the last 2 columns yet.

How can you not pick Troy for the last option?
The first column is the only one I am undecided on, between Aeon Flux and The Italian Job
Re. Troy: Never saw it, and never heard much about it beyond the trailers back when it was coming out. So it's looking like that, and probably The Italian Job for the last (I'm a sucker for heist movies).
The Italian Job is just a great, fun caper flick. Aeon Flux is... an okay movie. The choice is clear! But you get to watch Charlize Theron either way, so really you can't go wrong. :winky:

Slightly offtopic, but if anyone in the thread uses a Mac and has Leopard, plug in your HDDVD Drive to see if the new DVD player will play the HD discs.

I doubt it, but I'm curious anyway.
I would bet dollars to donuts the answer is going to be no.
HD-DVD support requires completely different licensing, and I don't see it mentioned anywhere on the mac page.

So I just saw the HD-DVD box-set online for about 45 bucks and 3 bucks shipping. That's less than half of what 90% of the brick and mortar stores are asking. Should I go for it?

Save the cheerleader, save some money m-i-rite?
Are you talking about the Heroes HD-DVD Season 1 box set? That is a good price, according to what I've seen so far. If you are looking to buy one, PM me, because I am looking to sell mine, and would much rather give a fellow PAer a really good deal rather than sell to some random person.
