I asked my Latin teacher what a real life application of scanning Latin poetry for elegiac couplets would be.

    He just stared at me.

I guess thats what I get for learning a dead language.

if by passive you mean talking to them and them listening that shit doesn't fly anymore

the kids have to be engaged...but my biggest problem is with teachers who think they need to put on a show like the fucking circus

I'm not there to entertain, I'm there to teach them something. If everything we do doesn't make them better at math we're wasting time.

As in, people would rather sit there and be fed information and ideas, instead of finding information for themselves, or exploring new ideas. I think we, as in U.S.A. culture, is used to being told what to think, and passiveness is part of that.

    I'm taking a history class!

For the past few weeks, I've been learning how fucked up Latin America (and to a lesser extent, the middle east) has been since, well, pretty much since it was settled. Do you teach anything as interesting as that, sock?

Some of the people in this class are pretty stupid, which makes me glad my parents cared about school quality more than anything else whenever we moved.

I always hear about how our education sucks. But my public high school was like the greatest thing.

I mean, I guess we're supposed to be one of the best in the country, but still. It was so great.

    Mostly I'm just bragging.

    150cc wrote: »
Other real life quotes from the conference:

Instructional Coach: Every lesson you teach needs to have a real-life application. Kids need to see that everything they learn has to be useful.

150cc: Well... isn't it better just to get them to learn for the sake of learning? Learning is supposed to be fun, why can't I just worry about that? Why does everything have to be useful, why can't I just show them how to learn things just because it's fun to learn?

Instructional Coach: Good luck, kids will never do that.

    150cc: That's a little... negative.

Instructional Coach: How long have you been teaching?

    150cc: Three years.

    Instructional Coach: Figures.

To be fair, my favorite class ever was a personal finance class I took in high school, because it was actually very useful. Learning for the sake of learning, sure, there's that.
