Their names has to do with their gene state, doesn't it? Solid has the recessive genes (Which I always thought made no damn sense, given Big Boss's appearance in MGS3), Liquid has the dominant genes and Solidus, due to his name being an unstable solid state, has a mix of recessive and dominant genes.
Anyways, I never really got the hate for MGS2. Granted, I did play it years after it came out (Right before MGS3 came out, in fact), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only things that really bugged me about it were Fatman (What a lame-ass villain) and Rose (Obvious). Hell, I didn't mind Raiden at all, and with the reveal that he's basically Solid Snake through meme, I though he was badass.
The whole "recessive vs dominant" thing in MGS is stupid, wrong and retarded beyond belief. Anyone with a high-school knowledge of genetics can tell you it makes absolutely no sense at all. I've read pulp Sci-Fi stories with pseudo-science stuff like time travel and warp speed that made a lot more sense than that whole gene crap in MGS.
I do love the series, though.
Yeah, but dude, it is stated that facts about the human genome were covered up and hidden from the public, so of course you would think it sounds silly.
The only thing I disliked about Rose is that during the time I was playing the game I was very busy and often had to stop playing and go do something. I'm pretty disorganised, so usually this was an oh shit I'm about to be late type thing.
And rose would...not....stop....talking. Once she got mad and then....WOULDN'T LET ME SAVE.
Only thing I disliked. Other than that she seemed ok. She was trying to get through to someone who is pretty much oblivious to...well...anything that doesn't involve combat. At all.
So I can understand the nagging.
I realised that Campbell was an AI after he started going nuts at me after I'd just spent a good portion of the game installing a virus into a giant machine designed to house a massive AI. It was kind of obvious. It also explained why during the course of the game he acted completely out of character to how he did in MGS 1. He felt..a little off the whole time. It was just intuition, but he seemed inhumanly cold.
Also, he is never referred to as "Campbell", ever, which is something I realized like halfway through playing it the first time.
For a long time MGS was my favorite game, and is still really high up there. Two plot things bothered me though: Why would Decoy Octopus take the blood of his mimicry victim? It's pretty obvious they only did that so he could die of FoxDie, right? It seems stupid and poorly planned.
Decoy Octopus didn't die because he mimicked Donald Anderson's blood, he died because FoxDie targeted all members of FoxHound.
Is there any better official answer to why Snake didn't die of FoxDie other than Naomi's lame-ass copout?
Also, La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo and The Patriots are the same group, right?
La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo is gibberish Raiden hears when someone says "The Patriots". Raiden's Patriot-made nanomachines intercept those words and then spit out "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" instead.
Is it bad that after watching the MGS4 trailer and the whole Raiden vs Vamp and the Metal Gears the first thing I thought was "You're still not as badass as Grey Fox."?

Edit: Also, wouldn't the massive disconnect between what he's hearing and what he's seeing tip him off? Or like, a person saying "Oh I love The Patriots, they're the best football team"?

I assume that because Dolph is a member of the Navy, he would also have the same kind of stuff to prevent him hearing the name. Which also means he says La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo totally seriously, which is fucking hilarious.

I'm going to post the same links I post every time and MGS2 discussion pops up. These aren't meant to stifle discussion, and they don't have all the answers, but they are informative or at least entertaining.

That doesn't add up. He also hears people call them The Patriots. The president, for example, when he explains to you just what the fuck is going on.
As for Campbell, I was a little wary of him the entire game, simply because MGS1 very clearly stated that he wasn't going to be able to command FOXHOUND anymore.

It was one of the greatest video game moments I've ever had.
Anyway, I just wrapped the game up. Why exactly do people call the plot hard to understand? By the end of it, everything made perfect sense to me. It was kind of silly, but no more so than MGS1's plot. Solidus was kind of a stupid character too, what with the Dr. Octopus suit and everything. And for some reason it bugs the shit out of me that the third brother isn't Gaseous Snake.
The only ambiguity I can really see is that you don't know how much of what Roy and Rose told you is truth and how much is a lie.
Rose particularly confuses me. I had assumed she was a creation of GW just like Roy, but then when you meet the real version at the end, she talks as though she was the one who spoke to you throughout the game, even in Jejunum. Obviously it's not her during the Solidus fight, but at what point does the switch-over take place? And for that matter, is the real version a spy like you heard on the codec?
I'm pretty sure Rose is real up until Jejunum.
But the real Rose is pregnant, which is what you hear on the Codec during all of the Jejunum fuckery. That's an awful weird coincidence, isn't it? The "see me for who I am" line almost seems like she's still acknowledging that she's a spy, which was also revealed in Jejunum. Her calmness at the question "who am I really" also sort of suggests that she's already aware of Raiden's freaking out in Jejunum over what's real and what's fake.

So, what exactly was going on with the fake game-over screens and such inside of Arsenal? Campbell's fucked up-edness is explained by the fact that the virus was starting to take effect, but that shouldn't have any bearing on the real world.
It's pretty much just to fuck with your head. I freaked when I died during the fake death thing. Nothing particularly creepy so much as it was just fucked in general.
Right, it's to fuck with your head, but do they have a reason for it? Maybe, say, your GW-controlled nanomachines are going haywire and misread your vital signs, causing them to report you as dead?
And yeah, I am pretty sure the script of MGS1 would be the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard for someone who studies genetics.
Solid, Liquid, Solidus, and also Raiden near the ending all have the same goal, to get rid of The Patriots. Why then are they on opposing sides? Liquid I suppose I can see, since he hates Snake's guts and all, but it seems like Solidus only dislikes Snake because he's getting in his way. Additionally, Solidus could have effectively broken The Patriots' stranglehold if, like Raiden, he had decided not to fight. What need is there to hunt down and destroy The Patriots if you can simply defy their control?

YES! This has been my biggest complaint against the story of MGS2 since I beat it years ago. In fact, I totally expected them to team up and go against the Pats (or simply not fight) and was completely let down when it didn't happen. They all wind up being tools.

Solidus is attempting to fuck up Manhatten and the country something fierce. Yes hurt the Patriots, but also the country, that's why Snake and Raiden are working to stop him. I forget what exactly it was but he was kind of crossing the line.

But the goal of fucking up Manhattan was to create a place that the Patriots couldn't control, which he was then going to use as a base of operations to slowly liberate the country.

I just started playing Metal Gear Ac!d and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
I've played MGS 1 and 2, but have not played past the first stage of 3. While 2 was good, it felt like such a chore to complete, and since, many games have come out that do the genre better.

No game does 'super spy crazy storylines involving walking tanks' better than MGS.
If you're talking about stealth gameplay... yeah, but if that's all you want you are kind of missing the point of the MGS games.

The story is what got me through it, so I don't think I am missing the point of the MGS series.
Yeah, MGS isn't so much about stealth and being a spy, as it is not being seen, shooting rockets at nuclear tanks and being in the middle of a huge clusterfuck of weird happenings.
Splinter Cell is arguably the best stealth/spy game.

So, I cracked into MGS3 today. I was still hungry for Metal Gear action, and I wasn't patient enough to wait until I could pick up Subsistence, so I'm just doing Snake Eater.
It's no doubt partially due to the fact that I decided to bump up to hard mode for this game, but damn, it's really difficult! Caution mode never ends, the guards dodge shots better and seem to have better vision, and it seems like once you've triggered Alert Mode it's almost impossible to hide long enough to get back down to Caution. And the dogs! The dogs.
That said, I dig the presentation of the game so far. Everything is surprisingly realistic, Fuckface McBeecontroller notwithstanding. The James Bond-style opening was also really neat.
Does CQC get more complex as the game goes on? It's cool and all, but the way people talk about it I was expecting something a bit more meaty. As of right now it just seems like they've added fancy animations onto the neck-snap techniques of yore.

You can do stuff like interrogate soldiers and use them as human shields. It's tricky, though, because it uses the analogue buttons on the Dualshock and it's really easy to accidentally choke people to death.

Uhm well CQC, depends. Do you know you can also hold dudes and not slice their throats? Lightly pressing circle instead of pushing it all the way, which causes throaty slicy, makes you hold your opponent. From there you can just knock him to the ground, or, which is what I like to do, make him lie face down on the ground. You do this by holding a guy, then letting go of circle and immediately pressing forward and circle again, I believe. Then when he's down, you can hold him up and he'll just lie there for the entire time you are in the area unless another guard spots him.
But yeah, the game is definitely a hell of a lot harder. Especially first time through, I had a hell of a time adjusting as well and caused alerts in pretty much every area I entered. It's still really fun though, improvising your way out of situations, Rambo-style. After my first I did a no-kill no-alert playthrough, which was also lots of fun, I recommend it.
My advice is to just tread very, very slowly in each new area, see where the enemies are, don't rush it. If you want to play it safe just knock them out from a distance.

Yeah, I know all of that. I dunno, I was just expecting something along the lines of the sort of stuff that The Boss does to you in cut scenes. I was also expecting an eventual CQC-based boss fight, which would look similar to the animation playing in the background of the title screen. It's still a cool addition to the game, it just doesn't seem as holy-god-wow-awesome as people make it out to be.
Yeah, I expected more out of CQC in MGS3, too. The ol' hip-wiggling, item-dropping shit is meh. The pat-down in MGS4 is much better. Plus it looks like you can basically molest and rape someone once you get your hands on them. Awesome.

It also turns the whole "Raiden is ok but his girlfriend sucks" thing on its head. As a spy, Rose had to change everything about herself in order to be the ideal girlfriend for Raiden. So it's not necessarily her fault that she's such a stupid bitch, it's Raiden's for having horrendously bad taste in women.
How exactly do I use the fake death pills? When I try them, I get a game over. I'm assuming the screen is just part of the fake death, but there's no apparent way to use my revival pill from there.

I had to redo The Sorrow twice because I hadn't bothered with them before and didn't know this. My killcount wasn't exactly in the single digits either.

Playing around with it a bit more, it seems like I can only access my inventory during Alert Mode, which... sorta defeats the purpose of using it to evade guards.

I never looked into it much. I read about the codec theory and it seemed to work well enough. But now I'm not so sure. I could see it just being a codename that happens to be nonsense sounds.

Also, what use is it having a codename if you need to codename your codename?
Edit: Also, wouldn't the massive disconnect between what he's hearing and what he's seeing tip him off? Or like, a person saying "Oh I love The Patriots, they're the best football team"?
That must make following Football difficult.

I hadn't caught that before, but I'd buy Italax's explanation.
Dunno if it's the real explanation, though.

MGS1 & MGS2 similarities and differences: http://www.deltaheadtranslation.com/MGS2/DOTM_TOC.htm
It's not mine, but it's relevant.
Uh, what are you talking about? The la-li-lu-le-lo are undefeated and looking like super bowl contenders.
As for Campbell, I was a little wary of him the entire game, simply because MGS1 very clearly stated that he wasn't going to be able to command FOXHOUND anymore.

But the goal of fucking up Manhattan was to create a place that the Patriots couldn't control, which he was then going to use as a base of operations to slowly liberate the country.

Splinter Cell is arguably the best stealth/spy game.

The whole Raiden/Rose thing became a lot funnier once you realize that the Patriots had to pay Rose to date the poor guy.

Playing around with it a bit more, it seems like I can only access my inventory during Alert Mode, which... sorta defeats the purpose of using it to evade guards.

Hahah no no no.
You can't use the item during normal gameplay.
You'll see.
I never looked into it much. I read about the codec theory and it seemed to work well enough. But now I'm not so sure. I could see it just being a codename that happens to be nonsense sounds.
It sounds silly, but Kojima's a pretty silly guy.
